CHLOGGING (Chat+Blogging)

Hello All.

I keep finding myself wanting to have a general chin wag with the bloggers on here and instead of doing that I find myself barging onto threads, hi-jacking them and being generally a pain in the tubes.

So, if you want a chat about blogging, maybe some tips and helpful stuff about plug-ins, themes or maybe a chat about what your next blog could be about, or even something else then maybe we could use this thread? (I found myself getting engrossed about the sexiness of Stringer Bell on one blog thread this week - I'm so sorry Grin)

Have you all seen the "blogs are boring" AIBU thread. I started arguing but got bored of the argument. Meh to them all.

You know on the front page of wordpress? There's all those blogs? That's Freshly Squeezed and if you get on there you're all famous on the internet?

It's that.

I'm going, I'm writing, I'm doing it. It's hard going, but it SHALL NOT BEAT ME. I have 3 more to do as well.

I missed the boring blog thing - well, I clicked on it and just thought..it's not applicable to me - I'M FABULOUS Wink

Finally read that today, Shirley, so glad you stuck with it! And caught up with other posts I'd missed of yours (have caught up w lots of MN blogs today and really enjoyed myself).

It is hard to keep abreast of everything though. Because I looked at blogs so much today I hardly glanced at Twitter. Which is fine, I don't always use it daily, but OTOH I do want to keep up with the feminism stuff I find there via links that go up every day.

All the extra hits from the AIBU 'blogs are dull' thread are going to my head. I have MissMaryofSweden's kind words to thank. (finally had a good look at her blog for Ruby today and was really impressed with it too.) I will feel lost when that thread peters out and no new people are clicking on it. It must be the same for some of you! We must keep bumping it in AIBU

I know! I had over 450 hits yesterday. One thing I have noticed since we started the new blog post thread, my daily hits average has doubled. Will be interesting to see what happens on Monday. Am already thinking about a blog post for Monday.

Me too. I don't know whether to post it Sunday night or first thing Monday morning. Prob the latter as I am typically up very early.

But WHAT should it be? Oh the pressure.

DD roused me at 5 today. She went back to sleep but I used my iPod to look at my stats (like a mad person) and then couldn't get to sleep again for thinking about blogging. I have a small number of hits from the WordPress dashboard today but they don't link back to anything (and it's not like when you get a clickthrough from a tag on their category cloud). My blog isn't visible on the dashboard anywhere. I googled 'hits from wordpress dashboard' and found a few threads where people asked about this same phenomenon but got no proper answers.

My best guess is that it is the job of someone at WP to check any blogs that have a mystery traffic spike like the one I've had thanks to MN, and that they maybe have a 'staff' dashboard they can use to click blogs that aren't visible on the main WP page. Does that sound plausible? It is only 4 page views. Is it happening to you guys?

Yes, I have that too. Is that not when you click through from your WP dashboard?

I have added a popular post widget (after some struggling) and have written my first ever bit of code to change the format.

No, because your own clicks (assuming you are logged in, which you would have to be if you were on "your" dashboard, I think) shouldn't count as hits. And I got my hits in today's list even though it was 5 AM and I had not used the site at all today.

The WP dashboard is the main page, I think?

My hits have definitely gone up since I started posting with the network!

Also, I keep meaning to say, I am trying to learn the languages that WordPress uses to create it's blogs and would love some practice, if anyone is willing to let me do stuff to their blogs. Or if you even just need some coding advice, I'd love to help!

I'm adding the button this weekend and contemplating my Monday post.

DM you can pick a time to publish you know? You could write 10 posts and set them up to publish on Mon at 8 am, tues at 8am and so on.

It does work!

I have a WP Popular Posts installed, and would like to show the title of the post in bold, then in the next line a short summary. I managed to get it bold but there is no space between title and summary. here

This is the format of the links:

%posttitle%%postexcerpt%

Any ideas?

Do you want the whole thing to be a link or just the title? Because I would rewrite it to say:
%post_title%
%post_excerpt%

That will give you:

Title (as link)
Summary (not linked)

If you do want the whole thing as a link, add the after the although I am not certain that will work within an tag. You'd have to try it and see.

Any ideas on first day post yet? I am thinking about doing a general one about the blog, but think that may be boring. Or a bit of an intro and then lead into something else. Am indecisive today.

It did, Tee. Did you not read your email properly? Not desperately, but I thought if they are rolling it out on Monday then I want a new post up.

I may write two tomorrow if I have time as the next couple of days are going to be manic. We have the 4th July party on Monday with American neighbours and friends, then DS's birthday on Tuesday, Haircutting Day on Wednesday, packing on Thursday and going on holiday on Friday. I may be blogging at 3am to get a couple of posts in. Bad time to be going on holiday really.

I assume you know you can write something and then schedule when it posts?

Yes, saw that. I have written a post for Tuesday and scheduled it.

Done one today, and will do one for Monday.

Then one towards end of next week/weekend.

I will do a couple from Scotland.
