Time for a new specialism, methinks!

TheSmallPrint · 21/02/2011 16:17

I think at least one difference in that scenario Maud is that if the man himself were to confront us with his upset we certainly would apologise rather than abuse. Another is that we admire his work as well as his form!

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 21/02/2011 16:23

I see where you're coming from, Massive and Small, but I still worry that some of the comments passed here are the equivalent of the odious MW leering over VC's chest. I'll shut up now. In fact, I'm gonna take a break for a bit as GardenGirl wants some one-to-one time.

SupermassiveLBD · 21/02/2011 16:28

We do see what you mean, too, Maud. Enjoy your time with Gardengirl. How lovely she wants to spend time with you.

TheSmallPrint · 21/02/2011 16:32

Yes, agreed Maud, it could appear that way.

PassTheTwiglets · 21/02/2011 16:36

Twiggy outdid herself

Twiggy was drunk :)

It's always a nice thought spending time with them

It is? I haven't yet managed that :)

I do understand your point, Maud, but try as I might I just can't help seeing all our nonsense as just a bit of a giggle.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 21/02/2011 16:44

That's why I'm checking out for a while, Small. I don't want to rain on other people's parade. It has been a huge giggle, it really has, but once we stop laughing at ourselves and start leering at the tightness of his jeans ... well, I don't want to find myself standing next to MW.

DumSpiroSpero · 21/02/2011 16:45

I guess we do get a bit carried away sometimes (perhaps talk of dinosaurs and zoom function should cease - but it's so much fun!)

For me I think the difference is that Victoria Coren is just that - herself.

We are talking about someone who has played numerous characters who are in the public domain and for the most part, it is the characters we lust over discuss.

It is also not the only thing we talk about - Winner seems to have devoted himself entirely to VC's breasts for purely gratutious/offensive purposes for the best part of a week, which is a bit different from the kind of tongue-in-cheek comments that come up on here occasionally (ok, maybe a bit more often than occasionally Grin) alongside more worthy discussions and topics.

I also have to say (and yes I know I probably shouldn't and am being sexist but...) I'm inclined to think that a man is less likely to be mortally offended by a complimentary assessment of his assets (alongside his other considerable and more intellectual talents) than a woman is to be offended by a completely gratuitous barrage of Tweets solely focussing on her boobs.

PassTheTwiglets · 21/02/2011 16:46

I think we know what our intent is, so that lets us off - it's not like we're saying these things to his face, is it?! We would all be respectful when it was called for, I know we would. Nothing like MW at all. I truly don't think anybody here has ever said anything they need be ashamed of.

I hope my captions last night didn't upset or offend you, Maud :(

TheSmallPrint · 21/02/2011 16:53

When you say checking out Maud, do you mean properly? Shock

DumSpiroSpero · 21/02/2011 16:55

Maud...no!!!

And if you are still there - thank you for wet t-shirt Lucas the other night - have been trying to find that for ages but was searching for it as JP so drawing a blank!

OP posts:
SupermassiveLBD · 21/02/2011 17:07

I dunno, I was seeing it as celebration, as opposed to denigration. I too am sorry if I have offended.

Don't go, Maud. Sad

DumSpiroSpero · 21/02/2011 17:37

Me too Massive.

I think it's clear that we are having a bit of fun. There has been lots of discussion of his work and his acting talents alongside the smut saucy comments.

It's not as if we're collectively scheming to start stalking the bloke or delving into his personal life to any huge degree, which would, of course be bang out of order.

OP posts:
DumSpiroSpero · 21/02/2011 18:02

it's not like we're saying these things to his face, is it?! We would all be respectful when it was called for, I know we would.

I suspect we'd probably all be unconscious if we ever came face to face with Mr Armitage, so no worries there! Grin

OP posts:
PassTheTwiglets · 21/02/2011 18:07

Well we know that Massive would be able to change her expression in an instant as soon as she saw him :)

Maud, come back to us at some point, won't you? I do enjoy your posts.

SupermassiveLBD · 21/02/2011 18:10

Well, my dream self can, Twiggy. I guess my RL reaction would be more in the style of Spiro's prediction at 18:02:10

PhoenixRisingFromTheAshes · 21/02/2011 18:47

Oh dear - what has happened!!! Please don't go Maud!!!

I don't know what the moderation rules are for Mumsnet, nor how strictly they are applied, but on other forums, I have seen messages from moderators reminding people that what is written here is completely in the public domain, and may well be read by the Man himself and/or his family and friends.

DumSpiroSpero · 21/02/2011 19:16

I really can't think he or his family would have any major cause to take offence at anything we've posted over the last few months. Occasionally there's been a few Blush or Hmm comments - usually late at night when we've been on the Chateau Gizzy - but nothing seriously rude or personal.

Or perhaps I just have a high naughtiness threshold?!

It would be such a shame to lose you Maud - besides we might actually run the risk of descending into complete depravity without your calming influence Grin.

OP posts:
DumSpiroSpero · 21/02/2011 20:48

Phoenix - based on your experience of other RA forums - would you say we are more or less naughty than average?

I have always thought (although admittedly based on next to no research or evidence) that we are probably at the tamer/more light-hearted end of the fan spectrum...

OP posts:
SupermassiveLBD · 21/02/2011 20:49

Just checking in to see how everyone is. Hope you are all okay...

Spooks 5 is on the telly but I didn't fancy it.

DumSpiroSpero · 21/02/2011 20:55

Hi Massive,

How's things with you this evening?

OP posts:
SupermassiveLBD · 21/02/2011 20:57

Okay, I suppose. Feeling a bit down about all this.

DumSpiroSpero · 21/02/2011 20:59

I can't quite fathom how one minute we were talking about Michael Winner being a lecherous old fart and it ended up here tbh

OP posts:
SupermassiveLBD · 21/02/2011 21:10

I suppose you can draw some sort of parallel between our goings-on and his, if you're are being sensitive.
Like you, I think we're a bit naughty at times but mostly 99% harmless and well-intentioned.
I should be very interested to see Phoenix's opinion.

DumSpiroSpero · 21/02/2011 21:21

Me too, re Phoenix. I don't go on the forums, purely because having had a look at one in the early days of the thread I thought the bods on it took it all a bit too seriously.

I also love that our conversations spin off into other things - I've got back into a lot of stuff that I used to enjoy but have neglected since H & DD came along and that's been really nice.
