Theresahole - perhaps you weren't here when I posted this . As I've said, I dislike a lot of the Guy vids because the music is so naff, but this I like.
Yes, he says on the dvd extras that he read the book. As he jolly well should. You're right, though; even though they took frightful liberties with Mrs G's dialogue, the mood and character is spot-on. Funnily enough, I've been deliberating for the last week about whether I should sign up to do a PhD or whether (as is likely the case) that would be insanity. I doubt, though, that I could work North and South into it, however ingenious I tried to be, so perhaps just a Learned Essay on the science and art of adapting books for tv with particular reference to N&S? I do intend to reread the book to check whether (as I believe) that whole absurd Great Exhibition scene was a complete fabrication. A scene I love in the dvd is the one near the end with Higgins, where Higgins mentions her brother in Spain and the penny finally drops that Margaret has not got Another Suitor. The look of happiness spreading across Mr Thornton's face is in itself a joy to behold (although not as much as his beaming happiness at the very end, where they are Reunited and Kissing and she wordlessly announces that she is Coming Home With Him).
DH has just gone to bed, leaving me (as he puts it) to ogle Mr Armitage. I may perchance do a little light YTing and then I shall pursue him again with the Penguin North and South.
