As the title says, I’ve decided to retire at 40, so AMA!

How!?

DomPom47 · 07/10/2026 17:42

What did you do for work? What are you planning on doing with your retirement?

Tinnybinnylinny · 07/10/2026 17:43

Have you actually retired? Or it’s scheduled? What do you do with the time?

I keep pondering this…..

OldieButBaddie · 07/10/2026 17:43

Why?

Vuella · 07/10/2026 17:43

“decided to”

So you haven’t yet?

caringcarer · 07/10/2026 17:47

Are you confident you will have enough funds to last until you are 90?

SwedishEdith · 07/10/2026 17:47

As in collecting your pension or are you just not working/unemployed? What's your income source?

Vuella · 07/10/2026 18:24

I reckon the Op has had a shit day at work and just decided she was going to jack it in tomorrow and started this thread.

Then reality dawned… not a chance!

SweatyGibbon · 07/10/2026 18:27

Were you a footballer? 😂

HorseandHeron · 07/10/2026 18:28

But what will you do for the next forty, fifty, sixty years? Do you have enough money to fund them?

IngaMinger · 07/10/2026 18:32

There was a thread like this once before and it turned out the OP had only briefly worked in her 20s, then became a SAHM and considered herself retired mid 40s as the kids were at school and her DH earned enough so she didn't need to work.

In RL the only 40 year olds I know who properly retired did so because they were hardcore FIRE post uni and lived off their investments

Devilla · 07/10/2026 19:10

I didn’t think @Amaretire40 would be back. Not even retired yet so will be heading back in to work tomorrow

I worked in the City after graduating in finance. I was sent on a number of international assignments.
I am still figuring it out as it’s quite tricky to switch off that part of the brain. I’d like to do more volunteering on some local community projects I’ve been involved with for some time.

You are still working if you have decided to

I handed in the notice so once my gardening leave is done in a couple of months, I will be unemployed and out of work. Gardening leave means I’ve logged out of all systems etc and won’t be back in the office. So far, I’ve had a few lazy days, taken a few trips to family and started planning house-related projects which I never had time for, but I do need a more robust plan.

so you’re seeing it as being unemployed?

partner? Children?

Amaretire40 · 07/10/2026 19:35

OldieButBaddie · 07/10/2026 17:43

Why?

To be honest it was always my goal. I really wanted to make sure that I didn’t have to work or be tied into a situation I didn’t want to be, so have had a very high savings and investment rate throughout my career.

OP posts:
fumingrightnow1 · 07/10/2026 19:37

Whats the difference between being retired and unemployed?

Devilla · 07/10/2026 19:38

Do you have any financial dependents?

Amaretire40 · 07/10/2026 19:38

caringcarer · 07/10/2026 17:47

Are you confident you will have enough funds to last until you are 90?

Yes. I own my property in London outright now, and will likely downsize at some future point, releasing that cash. I also have pretty significant investments and my pension is on track to be decent (per calculations it’s unlikely I’ll spend it all).

Investments in cash/stocks. I don’t believe in owning property other than the home I’m in.

I have de facto done FIRE as I’ve always saved significantly and spent modestly vs my income.

Edited

My shit day(weeks)at work period really kicked in last Xmas - since then I really spent a long time figuring out if it really was feasible practically (yes) and if id drive myself mad (will be seen, I guess, but I’ve got time to figure out what’s next).

Good for you, I’m jealous! I will only be able to do this at about 50. How much investments and savings do you have?
