Do you own plants?

I've always got spare or extra toiletries, loo rolls, etc. Do you only keep what you're currently using? Don't you get a couple extra when there's an offer in the shops? Same for food cupboard. Do you keep a basic stock of ingredients.

Offers in shops is just another way to get us to spend so no offers dont pull me in.

3 pairs 1 pair of trainer 1 pair of sliders 1 pair of slip on shoes.

Can any of these be used for formal? If not what do you wear to a wedding or funeral? What about wellies or hiking boots? Or flip flops? Or slippers?

6ate9 · 26/07/2026 17:12

Do you have a vacuum cleaner?

fantom · 26/07/2026 17:13

Do you have things in your home that are beautiful or luxurious rather than simply functional?

FrannyScraps · 26/07/2026 17:15

Sounds miserable tbh. What do you do with gifts? Bin them?

I only have one pair of feet why do i need more shoes.
I have sliders so i dont need flipflops.
I dont go to funeral either if i did it would just be plain black clothes and my black slip on ballet shoes.

My childhood home had a lot of knick nacks, ornaments and fussy furnishings and so I don't have those things, and prefer less clutter and tidy spaces.

Is your minimalism that kind of reaction?

Yes i was raised in a house that was just a mess with clutter and stuff we did not need.

Do you have any paperwork (documents, letters etc?)

(Thanks for this AMA.)

Thingamebobwotsit · 26/07/2026 17:19

Do you live alone? I aspire to this (well maybe not quite this stark) but it is the rest of my family that likes "stuff".

I’m a minimalist too but I could only do it once I lived on my own. It’s hard when you live with other people!!

My most luxurious thing as got to be my A/C.

Does your minimalism also apply to non-physical things, such an electronic files, emails and subscriptions?

Your written communication seems to err on the side of minimalist, would you say this is the case generally? What about oral communication?

SuziQuinto · 26/07/2026 17:27

I do admire your thinking. I try not to accumulate excess "stuff" if I buy something new, I discard the old one ( charity shop bag). It's mentally freeing to clear out unnecessary stuff.

When my parents died It was sad to discover little hoards of quite bizarre things in their house. Under the stairs there was a box of dozens, if not a hundred, yellow dusters. And about 15 boxes of washing powder. My mum must have just bought one every time she went shopping. But they were war babies and had known poverty in childhood.
We're all the products of our upbringing, clearly.

Ibi · 26/07/2026 17:33

I only buy what I need and use, but I’m definitely not a minimalist!!

Yes, it was the same with my parents. They remembered rationing. Then shortages in the Three Day Week etc. it does stay with you.
