I knew a lot about Mandy, or thought I did because of what I saw in the media, but have never heard of Emma Ridley. However I am in my seventies, was a young married woman and mother during their heyday and could have been their mother. I do remember feeling desperately sorry for Mandy Smith and couldn't understand why Bill Wyman got involved with a thirteen year old in the 1980s when it was not acceptable. Had she been seventeen or eighteen nobody would have cared. Her mother thought it was all right and was even encouraging! Wyman got away with it because for two or three years the relationship was not made public and he eventually married her.

Maybe the OP is Bill Wyman.

Looking back I can’t believe how the tabloids treated teenage girls- throughout 80s and 90s. It didn’t feel right then, but it was treated as somehow normal which it certainly wasn’t. Right up to Billie Piper and Charlotte Church.

OP can you comment on the girls’ relationship with the press? How did it work? did the much older men involved liaise with the press about their stories?

Did you get or do you feel either of the girls got anything useful out of the relationship with the press at the time, or later on- money, work, career contacts? What did the celebrity men get out of it?

Why are Monster Munch so much smaller than they used to be, both in bag size and size of feet? My Roast Beef ones contained about six feet, very disappointing.

I was saddened the other day when I realised how tiny Cadburys Mini Rolls are now.

What did all the parents say/do to stop you all? My DD is 14 and I'd be appalled if she was having sex with somebody of that age and she certainly wouldn't be out partying!

Mandy Smiths mother didn't give a fuck about her 2 daughters. She took to her bed for 2 years after getting a divorce and let them run wild in london nightclubs and couldn't be arsed to parent them "coz she was ill".

She did however, make a miraculous recovery when Mandy met Bill Wyman and even let him sleep with her at her home (when she was underage).

I am of that generation OP! i remember Mandy Smith and Emma Ridley very well. It was another world really - I remember going on a date when I was 18 (so quite old compared to MS and ER) and being put under pressure to have sex. I remember discussing it with the adults around and they were so non-plussed about it as if that is what happens these days and why are you making a fuss? So many girls were having sex at very early ages and now I have teenage children makes me sad. My 15 and 16 year old are still babies really and in no way able to cope with a mature relationship. One of my best friends had a very full on relationship at 15 and has never had a long-term relationship again. I feel for Mandy Smith and Emma Ridley - I hope they have had happy lives. Amanda de Cadenet looks like she has had an amazing life despite having had tricky teen years.
