Are you married?

LEMtheoriginal · 26/07/2018 21:59

Does the bible teach it? Its a sin in the catholic church but im not sure about other forms of Christianity. I guess its all about interpretation. I dont know

lashesandflashes · 26/07/2018 22:02

yes....4 children later we opted for the snip. We are definitely a look at each other and get pregnant combo though.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 26/07/2018 22:06

lem what's your point? The point I'm making is that contraception is either sinful or it isn't, surely. I don't think the bible differentiates between them.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/07/2018 22:08

That's sort of my question LEM. Either preventing pregnancy is a sin or not, surely? The types weren't known about so how is one better than the other?

CraftyGin · 26/07/2018 22:08

As a Roman Catholic, why is rhythm method morally superior to artificial methods?

kaytee87 · 26/07/2018 22:09

Op, it's avoiding or interrupting pregnancy that's 'sinful' so the withdrawal method is just as sinful as the pill and a lot less effective

LEMtheoriginal · 26/07/2018 22:12

No because if you took that stance to the ectreme then not having sex would also be a sin!! I guess its to do with once the process of creating a life has begun the sin would be ending it. Assuming of course one considered fertilisation that point or actual implantation???? Maybe thats it?

IKnowItsTIMHONKSTIMHONKS · 26/07/2018 22:13

It's called "ask me anything" not "ask me some questions based on my religious sensibilities"

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 26/07/2018 22:14

I thought any sex other than for procreation was sinful?

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/07/2018 22:14

But then condoms or the snip would be cool too, right?

I mean let's be honest it's actually about the Church wanting more followers, not caring about women's health and women having to find a way to deal with it. But the justification interests me.

LEMtheoriginal · 26/07/2018 22:15

Crafty - thats an intetesting point. When my friend got married in a catholic church they had to have lessons in family planning and were told the only acceptable method of contraception was the rhtyhm method.

I'll bow out now as im not a practicing catholic and dont want to hijack the Ops thread.

DieAntword · 26/07/2018 22:16

Withdrawal is not permitted by the Catholic Church. It’s literally in the bible (see Onan).

NFP is allowed by the church becaue you are not technically doing anything to stop a particular sex act creating a child you’re just not doing sex acts likely to (I.e. during your fertile window). It seems a bit like casuistry but hey... the Catholics invented and have a long tradition of casuistry so...

CraftyGin · 26/07/2018 22:16

Matthew 19:26: Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

edinburghlass1991 · 26/07/2018 22:16

I do get the sense that bc is something that many catholic women use ( dd is at catholic school many one child families) the main problem with bc is it stops implantation in general since most catholics believe that life starts as soon as the egg is-fertilised it’s like an abortion every month which is why barrier methods are preferable

It’s nothing to do with biology or theology - it’s about being obedient to, and controlled by, the RCC.

edinburghlass1991 · 26/07/2018 22:18

You will fine almost every church’s view on what is right and wrong different. For me not using abortive bc is my preferred choice

OP posts:
CraftyGin · 26/07/2018 22:20

And most women would agree given that condoms are the main form of contraception in this country - not abstinence.

kaytee87 · 26/07/2018 22:20

For me not using abortive bc is my preferred choice

Why not condoms then? Genuine question btw.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 26/07/2018 22:20

'Abortive' birth control! How utterly absurd. Honestly, in this day and age we should really be more intelligent than this.

edinburghlass1991 · 26/07/2018 22:20

No control I was raised Rc but left and rejoined absolutely no one cared I was welcomed back with open arms

blaaake · 26/07/2018 22:20

Haha. My 17yo is a result of the withdrawal method. Hope you like being pregnant!

lonelyatchristmas · 26/07/2018 22:21

Im a catholic and I'm on birth control.. I don't see myself as being a sinner for doing so I'm proud of myself for taking precautions but should it fail some day then I would look at it as a blessing but really to say that birth control is like an abortion every month.. cmon now.. what era are you living in..

Failingat40 · 26/07/2018 22:21

Are you married @edinburghlass1991 ?

CraftyGin · 26/07/2018 22:22
