What Mumsnet users say

My verdict

At some point (mid-30s, I’ve found), luxury stops meaning late nights and starts meaning waking without a stiff lower back, preferably without being jolted awake every time your partner turns over at 3am. The Origin LumbarCloud™ Mattress is designed with exactly those problems in mind.

It’s Origin’s plushest and most expensive mattress, with 11 layers, up to 8,700 pocket micro-springs and nine ergonomic support zones. It also promises better temperature regulation and a soft feel without the sinking sensation you can get from memory foam.

It all sounds impressive, but mattress specifications only tell you so much. What matters is how it feels once the fitted sheet is on, your partner is wriggling beside you and a five-year-old has appeared in the bed at dawn.

Even in its super king size, the mattress arrives neatly in a box for easy delivery

We sent the super king Origin LumbarCloud™ Mattress to Mumsnet tester Rebecca Warbis, who slept on it at home for 30 days. Rebecca works full time from home, describes her activity level as “mostly sedentary” and sleeps in several positions. She shares the bed with her partner and, occasionally, their five-year-old daughter.

Before the test, Rebecca rated her sleep as poor. She described her previous mattress as: “Bumpy, uncomfortable and too hard.” She also shared that she “kept getting lower back pain” and “felt when [her] husband moved and kept waking [her] up.”

After 30 days, the difference was clear. Rebecca found the LumbarCloud comfortable and supportive. Her lower back pain improved, her partner’s movements disturbed her less and she slept more comfortably during the recent hot weather. She gave it full marks for comfort in her usual sleeping position and said she felt “extremely well supported” during the night.

Its most useful features weren’t just impressive on paper, either. The motion isolation helped because Rebecca is a restless sleeper, while the cooling came into its own in her warm bedroom. The lumbar support addressed the discomfort she’d been waking with and the super king size left a bit more room when her daughter joined them.

We owe a thanks (and probably an apology) to Rebecca’s husband for all the heavy lifting

There is a catch, of course. At £1,940 for the super king size Rebecca tested, it’s a serious investment. It’s also 35cm deep, so you may need to rethink your fitted sheets (especially if you plan to add a mattress topper).

But for couples, warm sleepers and anyone fed up with an overly hard or unsupportive mattress, Rebecca’s experience suggests the LumbarCloud could make a noticeable difference.

How we tested the Origin LumbarCloud™ Mattress

Rebecca tested the super king Origin LumbarCloud™ Mattress at home for 30 days, sharing it with her partner and, sometimes, their five-year-old daughter. In other words, it got a rather more realistic workout than a quick lie-down in a showroom.

Her previous mattress was a good-quality hotel model, so the LumbarCloud wasn’t being compared with a bargain-basement option. Even so, Rebecca found it too hard and uncomfortable. She often woke with lower back pain and could feel every time her husband moved during the night.

The moment of calm before the mattress unrolls…

Rebecca’s home and bedroom are also generally warm, making her a useful tester for the LumbarCloud’s cooling claims. Part of the test took place during a heatwave, which gave those claims a proper run for their money.

We assessed her feedback against Mumsnet’s mattress testing criteria, too. These covered overall performance, quality and durability, ease of use and value for money, as well as comfort, temperature regulation, motion isolation and health and safety.

What is the Origin LumbarCloud™ Mattress?

The Origin LumbarCloud™ is the brand’s most luxurious mattress, combining a plush top with targeted support for the back and joints. Like the Origin Hybrid Pro, the LumbarCloud has a medium-plush feel designed to balance cushioning with support. The LumbarCloud is the more substantial of the two, though, with 11 layers and a 35cm depth compared with the Hybrid Pro’s eight layers and 31cm profile.

The 11 layers include a CoolWeave pillowtop filled with kapok fibres, phase-change cooling bands, gel-infused latex, bamboo-infused wool, HexaGrid adaptive foam, zoned micro-springs, graphite-infused AstroLift latex and a dense foam base. It also has nine ergonomic zones designed to support the lumbar area.

That’s quite the ingredient list, but in plain English it means a mattress designed to feel soft on top, supportive underneath and less likely to trap heat.

Et voilà! The Origin LumbarCloud Mattress shown unpacked and unrolled

Rebecca said: “The mattress delivered well on the brand’s key claims. It provided excellent support, particularly for my lower back, and I noticed a significant improvement in my back pain after sleeping on it.

“Although it has a soft, memory foam-like feel, it doesn’t sag or make you feel like you’re sinking into it, so it still feels supportive throughout the night. The cooling features also lived up to expectations, as I felt cooler than I did on our previous mattress.

“The motion isolation was impressive — I’m a restless sleeper and often move around or get out of bed during the night, but these movements didn’t disturb my partner, which made a noticeable difference to both of our sleep quality.

“Finally, the mattress felt very well made, with high-quality, luxurious materials that gave it a premium feel.”

How comfortable and supportive is the Origin LumbarCloud™ Mattress?

Rebecca gave the LumbarCloud top marks for comfort in her usual sleeping position. She described the firmness as “just right” and said she felt “extremely well supported” throughout the night.

As a combination sleeper, she needed it to remain comfortable as she changed position, rather than feeling supportive in one position but uncomfortable when she rolled over.

Rebecca said: “The mattress has performed consistently well throughout daily use. Unlike our previous mattress, where the quality of sleep varied from night to night, I’ve had a consistently comfortable and supportive experience every night.

A family lay atop the Origin LumbarCloud Mattress smiling at the camera in selfie mode

“...three in a bed and the little one said…”

“Over the past 30 days, it has continued to provide excellent support, and I haven’t experienced the lower back pain that I used to wake up with regularly. There haven’t been any nights where the mattress has felt less comfortable or supportive — it has maintained the same high level of comfort from the first night onwards.”

Origin says the LumbarCloud uses up to 8,700 pocket micro-springs and nine ergonomic zones to support different parts of the body, particularly the lower back. Its contouring top layers should also appeal to anyone who likes a little cushioning around the body but doesn’t want to sink deeply into the mattress.

Is the Origin LumbarCloud™ Mattress good for back pain or stiffness?

Rebecca said she stopped waking with the lower back pain she had experienced on her previous mattress.

Of course, mattresses aren’t medical treatments, and back pain can have many causes. What works for one person may not work for another. However, Rebecca regularly woke with lower back pain on her previous mattress and found that it did improve after switching to the LumbarCloud.

Does the Origin LumbarCloud™ Mattress keep you cool at night?

Cooling was one of the LumbarCloud’s strongest points during testing. Rebecca’s home and bedroom are generally warm, and her previous mattress often left her feeling hot and uncomfortable.

During the test, she said she didn’t wake feeling sweaty or overheated. She said: “One of the biggest differences I’ve noticed is how much cooler this mattress feels.

“During the recent heatwave, our previous mattress would often leave us waking up feeling overheated, sweaty and uncomfortable. With this mattress, despite the room temperature being exactly the same, we’ve both slept much more comfortably and haven’t experienced the same build-up of heat.

“This has been particularly noticeable when our daughter climbs into bed with us, as having three people in the bed would normally make it feel very warm and stuffy. Even then, the mattress has remained cool.”

Her experience also echoed our testing of the Origin Hybrid Pro, which performed well for temperature regulation during similarly hot weather.

Is the Origin LumbarCloud™ Mattress good for couples?

Motion isolation was the feature that surprised Rebecca the most. She’s a restless sleeper and often gets up during the night. On their previous mattress, even a small movement could wake the other person, which regularly disturbed their sleep.

When asked whether she could feel her partner moving or getting out of bed, Rebecca answered: “Not at all.” She said the LumbarCloud had “significantly improved” sleep disturbance and described it as “very stable”.

She explained: “The feature that surprised me the most was the motion isolation. Before using this mattress, I didn’t realise it was possible for movement on one side of the bed to have so little impact on the other.

“I often get up during the night because I don’t sleep particularly well, but my husband has hardly been disturbed, whereas he would usually wake up when I moved.

“The same has been true the other way around, as I’ve slept through when he’s got out of bed. It’s also been noticeable when our daughter is in bed with us — movement on one side doesn’t seem to travel across the mattress in the same way.”

Clsoe up of the details on the Origin LumbarCloud Mattress

Rebecca shared high praise for the mattresses’ construction and material quality

Is the Origin LumbarCloud™ Mattress well made?

Rebecca said: “The materials and finishes feel high quality, with neat stitching, embroidered sections and black side panels that make it look like a premium product.

“After 30 days of daily use, we hadn’t noticed any wear, loose stitching or sagging, and it still looked as good as new.”

How easy is the Origin LumbarCloud™ Mattress to set up and maintain?

Rebecca found the LumbarCloud very easy to set up. It arrives rolled and boxed, then expands after unpacking.

Asked about the process from opening the box to using the mattress, she answered: “Very easy.” She also found the instructions “clear and helpful”.

A super king mattress is never going to be especially dainty, but Rebecca didn’t find the LumbarCloud harder to manage than her previous one.

She said: “Although it’s a substantial mattress, it isn’t any heavier than our previous one, and the sturdy side handles make it much easier to move when changing the bed or lifting it to access the spare mattress we store underneath.

A view of the Origin LumbarCloud Mattress after its expanded fully and ready to have bedding added

After expanding, the mattress was ready to have bedding put on

“I also appreciated the non-slip base, which helps keep the mattress in place on the bed.”

Both are fairly unglamorous features until you’re trying to wrestle a fitted sheet over a 35cm-deep super king, at which point they become rather important. The LumbarCloud is also single-sided, so there’s no need to flip it.

Rebecca did notice a slight smell when the mattress was first unpacked, but it was simply a typical “new product” or factory smell rather than anything unpleasant.

“By the time I’d put the bedding on, I could no longer notice it, so it wasn’t an issue at all.”

What information does Origin provide about its materials and construction?

Understandably, a home test can’t independently inspect every internal layer. However, Origin does provide detailed information about the mattress’s construction and materials.

Rebecca said: “The information provided on the website clearly explains the different layers and materials that make up the mattress, which helped me understand how it has been designed and why it performs the way it does.

“Combined with how well the mattress feels in everyday use, it gives me confidence in both its construction and quality.”

The mattress is clearly well made and Rebecca agreed

Is the Origin LumbarCloud™ Mattress good value for money?

The super king LumbarCloud tested by Rebecca has an RRP of £1,940. There’s no tactful way around it: that is a lot of money for a mattress.

Its value will depend on how much difference the support, cooling and motion isolation make to your sleep. For Rebecca, those benefits were significant enough to justify the price.

She said: “Yes, I think it offers very good value for money. More importantly, the improvement in my sleep has made it feel like a worthwhile investment.”

When asked whether she would buy it at full price, she said: “Yes, I would buy this mattress at full price.

“Before using it, I hadn’t realised just how much difference a high-quality mattress could make to my sleep and overall comfort.

“Considering we spend around a third of our lives in bed, having a mattress that helps me wake up without pain and feeling well-rested has had a positive impact on the rest of my day.”

Origin also offers a 200-night trial and a 15-year warranty, giving buyers time to decide whether the mattress suits them.

Who would the Origin LumbarCloud™ Mattress suit?

Based on Rebecca’s feedback, the LumbarCloud is best suited to couples, restless sleepers, warm sleepers and anyone looking for a plush mattress with firm support underneath.

It may be a good fit if you:

  • Share a bed and are easily disturbed by movement

  • Tend to sleep warm or have a hot bedroom

  • Want cushioning without a deep sinking feeling

  • Prefer a medium-plush mattress with firm underlying support

  • Are replacing a hard, bumpy or uncomfortable mattress

  • Value practical details such as sturdy handles and a non-slip base

Rebecca recommended it for: “It would suit couples where one person works night shifts or gets up frequently, as well as people who tend to sleep warm.”

And who should avoid this mattress?

The LumbarCloud is unlikely to suit anyone looking for a very soft mattress with a deep, sink-in feel. Rebecca found its surface plush and comfortable, but described the overall firmness as medium supportive.

She said: “If you want a really soft mattress, this probably won’t be the right one. It feels more medium and supportive.”

Final verdict: should you buy the Origin LumbarCloud™ Mattress?

If you’re looking for a premium hybrid mattress that combines plush comfort with good support, the Origin LumbarCloud™ is worth considering.

After 30 days of testing, Rebecca concluded:

“I’d definitely recommend this mattress. My lower back pain has gone since I started using it, I’ve slept comfortably every night and the cooling properties made a real difference during the recent heatwave.

From above, the Origin LumbarCloud Mattress next to bed side tables

It’s hard to capture just how big the super king size is in a picture

“The motion isolation really stood out too. My husband moving around barely disturbed me, which wasn’t the case with our old mattress.

“It also feels really well made. The handles make it easy to move, the non-slip base keeps it in place and it feels like something that’s built to last. After a month of sleeping on it, I wouldn’t want to go back.”

For Rebecca, that combination of better support, cooler sleep and strong motion isolation made the LumbarCloud worth the investment.
