Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress review: does this cooling hybrid mattress live up to the hype?

We asked one tester to swap his ageing, heat-retaining mattress for the Origin Hybrid Pro. Here’s how it performed for comfort, support, cooling and motion isolation during real-life testing at home.

Our verdict

The Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress is a premium hybrid mattress that impressed our tester Andy where it matters most: comfort, cooling, support and motion isolation.

Andy had been sleeping on an entry-level John Lewis mattress for five years, and it had started to show its age. In his words: "Over time, lumps had developed and the mattress no longer felt as comfortable or supportive as it once had. We also found that it retained heat, making it noticeably less comfortable to sleep on during warmer nights."

After testing the Origin Hybrid Pro at home, including during a UK heatwave, Andy found it to be a definite upgrade. He said: "The Origin Hybrid Pro has been a significant improvement over our previous mattress."

Andy found the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress a "definite upgrade" from his previous mattress

It’s not cheap, and the king-size model is heavy enough to make setup a two-person job. But Andy found the improvement in comfort, support, temperature regulation and motion isolation immediately noticeable. His strongest endorsement? "The biggest compliment I can pay it is that I wouldn’t want to go back to our old mattress."

For couples, warm bedrooms and anyone replacing a tired old mattress that has become lumpy, sweaty or generally joyless, the Origin Hybrid Pro is a strong contender.

How we’ve tested the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress

The Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress was tested at home by Andy and his husband, who were replacing a five-year-old entry-level John Lewis mattress.

Their old mattress had developed lumps, no longer felt truly supportive and, worst of all, retained heat during warmer weather. Andy’s home can be difficult to regulate for temperature, and his bedroom tends to feel warm, which makes his cooling claims stronger here.

Andy slept on the king-size Origin Hybrid Pro during everyday use, sleeping on it in different positions and assessing comfort, support, temperature regulation, motion isolation, ease of setup, build quality and value for money. Rather helpfully, the mattress arrived during a UK heatwave, giving it a real trial by fire. Or at least, trial by sticky British summer night.

We assessed Andy’s feedback against Mumsnet’s mattress testing criteria: performance, quality and durability, ease of use, value for money, comfort and support, temperature regulation, motion isolation, and health and safety standards.

Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress: what’s in the box?

The Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress arrives boxed and compressed. Andy tested the king-size version, which is a substantial mattress once expanded.

In Andy’s test, the mattress itself was the focus. Origin currently advertises offers that can include free pillows with the Hybrid Pro, but promotions change frequently, so check the retailer’s product page before buying.

Origins customers can enjoy a 200-night home trial, 15-year warranty, free next-day delivery and also find live sale pricing across the available sizes on their site.

In true bed-in-a-box fashion, the mattress comes vacuum packed

What is the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress?

The Origin Hybrid Pro is a premium hybrid mattress designed to combine cushioning comfort with spring support. Origin describes it as having a medium-plush feel, eight layers, a 31cm depth and up to 5,300 springs. Its construction includes a removable top cover, Graphite Crystal Latex, HexaGrid Plus, bamboo-infused wool, ErgoCoil Titanium MicroSprings, cooling comfort foam, titanium springs and edge support.

Put simply, it’s designed to feel supportive without being rock hard, cushioned without being sink-in and cooler than a traditional heat-trapping mattress. Which, frankly, is what most of us want.

Andy moved from a firm mattress to the Origin Hybrid Pro, which he described as medium-firm in use. He was initially unsure about making that switch, but the change worked better than expected.

He said: "We moved from a firm mattress to a medium-firm one, which we were initially unsure about. In practice, we’ve actually found it to be even more supportive. Rather than feeling softer in a way that compromises support, it contours to the body while still providing excellent stability."

Unrolling the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress

Like most, if not all mattresses that arrive rolled up, the Origin requires time to settle into its true shape

How comfortable and supportive is the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress?

Very, according to Andy’s testing. Comfort was the first thing he noticed. His previous mattress had become lumpy and less supportive, so the difference was obvious from the start. He said: "Comfort was the first thing we noticed. According to Origin, the mattress features eight layers and measures 31cm deep, and it certainly feels substantial."

That word substantial comes up a lot with this mattress, and it makes sense. At 31cm deep, this isn’t a thin, apologetic slab of foam pretending to be luxurious. It looks and feels like a truly premium mattress.

In everyday use, Andy found the Origin Hybrid Pro struck a good balance between softness and structure. He said: "It strikes an excellent balance between cushioning and support, feeling comfortable without ever giving the sensation that you’re sinking into it. Instead, it provides a stable, reassuring sleeping surface that makes it easy to settle into."

That balance is important. Too firm and you wake up feeling like you’ve slept on a church pew. Too soft and your spine starts doing interpretive dance. Andy found the Origin Hybrid Pro supportive across different sleeping positions, which is useful if, like many of us, you start the night sensibly on your side and wake up face down with one arm numb.

He said: "Support has remained consistent regardless of sleeping position. Whether sleeping on my back, side or front, I’ve been comfortable throughout the night and have consistently woken feeling well rested."

The details of the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress

This uniquely designed mattress is made for cooling

Is the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress good for back pain or stiffness?

Andy noticed an improvement in his occasional lower back discomfort after switching to the Origin Hybrid Pro, but this needs careful wording. Mattresses are not medical treatments, and we’re not claiming this one will fix back pain.

Andy put it very sensibly: "Since switching to the Origin Hybrid Pro, my occasional lower back discomfort seems to have eased. It’s impossible to say with certainty that this is solely down to the mattress, but the improvement has coincided with using it and I’ve been waking feeling more comfortable."

That’s a useful finding, because it reflects what many mattress shoppers are really trying to solve: not a dramatic medical issue, necessarily, but that slightly creaky morning feeling that makes you wonder if you’ve aged 12 years overnight.

For Andy, the Origin Hybrid Pro coincided with more comfortable mornings and better rest. He also said: "More generally, both my husband and I have been sleeping more soundly and waking up feeling better rested and more refreshed than before."

Does the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress keep you cool at night?

This was the standout feature for Andy. He and his husband had struggled with their previous mattress retaining heat, and their bedroom tends to feel warm. The Origin Hybrid Pro arrived during a UK heatwave, which is about as useful a cooling test as you can get without moving the bed into a greenhouse.

Andy said: "The cooling claims have also stood up well during testing. We happened to receive the mattress during a UK heatwave, which made it an ideal opportunity to assess its temperature regulation. Compared with our previous mattress, which would often become uncomfortably warm overnight, the Origin Hybrid Pro stayed noticeably cooler and made sleeping much more comfortable."

That’s the sort of practical testing detail I like. Not a vague "it felt breathable" after lying on it for 10 minutes in an air-conditioned showroom. This was a warm bedroom, a heatwave and actual sleep.

Andy was surprised by how well it performed. He said: "The biggest surprise was the cooling performance. I expected it to be comfortable, but I was genuinely surprised by how much difference it made during the UK heatwave."

He also added: "Compared with our previous mattress, the difference has been significant. The Origin Hybrid Pro stayed much cooler overnight, and I think we would have had much more disrupted sleep had we still been using our old mattress."

For hot sleepers, that’s a compelling bit of real-world feedback. Bedding, room temperature, hormones, pets and partners will all affect how warm you feel at night, because apparently sleep needs obstacles, but Andy found the mattress made a noticeable difference.

Origin's branding is consistent

Is the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress good for couples?

Yes, based on Andy’s experience. The Origin Hybrid Pro performed particularly well for motion isolation, which is a deeply unglamorous mattress feature until you share a bed with someone who turns over like they’re trying to win a cheese-rolling competition.

Andy said: "Support and motion isolation have also been particularly impressive. Movement from my husband during the night is much less noticeable than it was on our previous mattress, leading to fewer disturbances and a better night’s sleep."

That makes it a strong option for couples, especially if one person is a restless sleeper or gets in and out of bed during the night.

Andy specifically said: "I’d particularly recommend it for couples. The motion isolation means movement from one partner is much less noticeable, and if your bedroom tends to get warm, the cooling performance is a genuine benefit."

Setting up the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress

Setup doesn't take too long once you remove the packaging

Is the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress well made?

Andy was impressed by the build quality from the moment the mattress was unboxed.

He said: "The Origin Hybrid Pro has a premium look and feel from the moment it’s unboxed. The cover is exceptionally soft to the touch, giving the mattress a luxurious finish that’s in keeping with its price point."

He also felt the materials and construction matched the premium positioning: "The quality of the materials is evident throughout. It feels well constructed and substantial, while the grippy base keeps the mattress securely in place on the bed frame. We haven’t had to reposition it once since setting it up."

That grippy base is the sort of thing that sounds boring until you’ve had a mattress that migrates across the bed frame every time you change the sheets. A mattress that stays put is one less domestic faff, and I’m all for those.

Andy also commented on the finish and stitching: "The stitching, finish and overall construction are all of a high standard, and it feels like a premium product that’s built to last."

We can’t make long-term durability claims from a standard testing period, because none of us has yet persuaded time to speed up for editorial purposes. But during testing, Andy found it well made, reassuringly weighty and consistently supportive.

Like all vacuum packed mattresses, take care when opening the packaging

How easy is the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress to set up?

The Origin Hybrid Pro is straightforward to set up, but you’ll want two people.

The king-size version tested by Andy weighs 42kg, according to Origin, so this isn’t one to casually drag upstairs by yourself while pretending you’re fine.

Andy said: "The king-size version is surprisingly heavy, making it a two-person job to move, but that weight contributes to its reassuringly substantial feel."

Once in place, though, it was easy to live with. Andy said: "Despite being heavy, the mattress was straightforward to set up with two people. Once in place, the grippy underside keeps it securely positioned, so it hasn’t moved at all during testing."

Maintenance was minimal too: "Aside from giving it a quick vacuum when changing the bedding, we haven’t needed to do anything special to keep it clean."

Origin also states that the top cover is removable and washable at a maximum of 40°C, which is useful for keeping things fresh without attempting to clean the whole mattress.

Does the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress smell when new?

No, Andy didn’t notice any unpleasant off-gassing. He said: "No. There was no noticeable chemical smell when we unboxed the mattress. Once it had expanded, it was ready to use almost immediately without any unpleasant odour or waiting period."

This is worth noting, because some boxed mattresses do arrive with that unmistakable new-foam smell that makes you wonder if you should be sleeping with the windows open and a fan on full blast. Andy didn’t experience that here.

On materials and safety, Andy said: "I’m not an expert in mattress materials, but Origin states that the foam used is free from harmful chemicals, metals and environmental pollutants. Combined with the overall quality of the product, that gave me confidence in its construction."

For compliance, we’d keep this clearly attributed to Origin unless independently verified. Origin’s own product page describes the materials as non-toxic and hypoallergenic.

Is the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress good value for money?

At £849 for the king-size model at the time of testing, Andy initially considered the Origin Hybrid Pro a significant investment.

He said: "At £849 for the king-size model, the Origin Hybrid Pro initially felt like a significant investment, particularly as it costs considerably more than our previous mattress."

That’s fair. A mattress is one of those purchases that can be easy to put off because there is always something more urgent to pay for. School shoes. Car insurance. The dog doing something financially inconvenient at the vet.

But after testing, Andy felt the mattress justified its price: "Having used it, I think it offers excellent value. The improvements in comfort, support and temperature regulation have been immediately noticeable, and the overall build quality gives it a premium feel."

He added: "The strongest endorsement I can give is that we would happily pay full price to buy it again in the future."

That’s useful feedback because free-to-test products can skew enthusiasm. The real test is whether someone would spend their own money on it. Andy says he would.

Origin’s live product page currently shows the Hybrid Pro from £374 in the sale for a single, with a listed total value of £570, and £652 for a king, with a listed total value of £848. These offers include free pillows and are presented as limited-time savings, so check the final checkout price carefully before publishing or buying.

Who is the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress best for?

Andy felt the Origin Hybrid Pro would suit a wide range of sleepers. He said: "I think the Origin Hybrid Pro would suit a wide range of sleepers."

Based on his test, it’s especially well suited to couples, hot sleepers and anyone replacing an older mattress that has started to sag, lump or retain heat.

Andy said: "I’d particularly recommend it for couples. The motion isolation means movement from one partner is much less noticeable, and if your bedroom tends to get warm, the cooling performance is a genuine benefit."

It’s also a good option if you want a mattress that feels supportive but not brutally firm. Andy moved from a firm mattress and found the Origin Hybrid Pro more supportive in practice, despite its more cushioned feel.

Who should avoid the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress?

The main barrier is price. Andy said: "The main consideration is budget. At around £849 for the king-size model, it’s more expensive than many entry-level mattresses, so the price may put it beyond the reach of some buyers."

It may also be less suitable if you need a mattress you can move easily by yourself. The king-size version is heavy, and while Andy didn’t find setup difficult with two people, it would be a faff solo.

Andy didn’t find many other drawbacks. He said: "Other than that, I struggled to identify a group of sleepers who wouldn’t benefit from it."

How does the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress compare with other mattresses?

Andy couldn’t compare the Origin Hybrid Pro directly with other premium hybrid mattresses, and we don’t want to invent a side-by-side test that didn’t happen.

He said: "I haven’t had the opportunity to test other premium hybrid mattresses side by side, so I can’t make a fair direct comparison."

What he could say, though, was that it was a major upgrade on the entry-level mattress it replaced: "Compared with the entry-level mattress it replaced, the Origin Hybrid Pro represents a significant improvement in comfort, support, motion isolation and temperature regulation."

That’s the comparison most useful for shoppers in a similar position. If your current mattress is old, lumpy, hot or unsupportive, Andy’s experience suggests the difference could be very noticeable.

Final verdict: should you buy the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress?

If you’re looking for a premium hybrid mattress that feels supportive, stays cooler than an older heat-retaining mattress and reduces disturbance from a partner moving in the night, the Origin Hybrid Pro is well worth considering.

Andy’s feedback was consistently positive. He said: "Absolutely. After spending time with the Origin Hybrid Pro, I would have no hesitation in recommending it."

He also said: "I’ve already found myself talking positively about it to friends and family who are considering replacing their own mattresses. That’s probably the strongest endorsement I can give."

Bedding atop the Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress

How lovely is this bedding!?

The Origin Hybrid Pro is not a budget buy, and the king-size mattress is heavy. You’ll need two people for setup, and you’ll want to check the live price carefully because Origin’s offers and bundled freebies change. But for Andy, those drawbacks were outweighed by the gains in comfort, cooling, support and motion isolation.

His closing feedback sums it up neatly: "Overall, I’ve been impressed by the Origin Hybrid Pro. It has exceeded my expectations and has been a substantial upgrade over our previous mattress."

And perhaps the most telling line of all: "What initially felt like an expensive purchase now feels entirely justified, and I’m pleased that this is now the mattress we’ll be sleeping on every night."

🔎 About the tester

Andy tested the king-size Origin Hybrid Pro Mattress at home with his husband, as part of Mumsnet’s real-home mattress testing. He replaced a five-year-old John Lewis mattress that had become lumpy and heat-retentive, and tested the Origin Hybrid Pro in a warm bedroom during a UK heatwave.
