The Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor has a good range of features beyond basic video and audio monitoring, including a built-in nightlight, white noise and lullabies, as well as room temperature monitoring. Ash particularly liked having these functions built into the monitor rather than needing separate devices.

“If I'd gotten this camera first I wouldn’t have needed to purchase a white noise machine or a nightlight! These are a real highlight of this!” she says. The temperature monitor was also genuinely useful during testing, particularly during the heatwave. “The temperature is also a great feature- as we’ve just had a heatwave it’s been a really helpful tool as we’ve never had one in Ronnie’s room.”

For Ash, having these features together was a major part of the monitor's appeal. “All of these genuinely improve the experience and in my opinion make it worth the money because you’re getting all of these things in one!”

How we tested the Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor

Ash tested the Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor with her two-year-old son over several weeks. Her baby daughter still co-sleeps, so the camera was used in her toddler's bedroom overnight, while she kept the parent unit with her around the house.

“I have used the camera in my son’s bedroom overnight and have taken the monitor mainly into the living room and even outside on an evening with no connection problems,” she explains.

Testing took place during a heatwave, which also gave Ash the chance to make regular use of the monitor's built-in temperature monitoring. “I was most grateful for the built-in thermostat!” she adds.

During testing, Ash assessed the monitor's performance, picture and audio quality, ease of use, durability, safety features, battery life and signal strength, as well as its built-in features and day-to-day practicality.

There are no additional accessories included, but Ash was pleased that both units came with their own plugs. “I did like that it came with plugs as not many devices do nowadays,” she says.

How easy is the Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor to set up for first use?

The Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor was very quick to get up and running, with Ash finding the setup straightforward from the start. The camera and parent unit paired without any problems, and she liked that the monitor can be used with or without Wi-Fi.

“In terms of setup- it was a matter of minutes. I would say that it would be extremely easy even for those who aren’t tech savvy which is a bonus. It all paired up straight away,” Ash explains. “You can use with or without Wi-Fi which is also a massive bonus. No issues at all.”

With no failed pairing attempts or lengthy setup process during testing, this is a monitor that should be easy to get going without much preparation.

How does the Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor look?

The Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor has a lightweight, glossy white design, with the camera doubling up as a nightlight. It can be positioned on a desktop or wall mounted, while the parent monitor has a built-in stand. The camera also has pan, tilt and zoom controls, so you can adjust the view without having to move the unit itself.

Ash particularly liked the way the nightlight looks in her son's room and found herself using it regularly. “The built-in nightlight makes it look super smart in my sons bedroom! We have used this feature plenty!”

The main drawback is that the camera needs to remain plugged in, which limits where it can be positioned. Ash needed an extension cable during testing and felt this looked untidy in the bedroom. “The only problem is that the camera has to be plugged in at all times,” she says. “I’ve had to use an extension cable for the testing period which is obviously unsightly in his room.”

How sturdy is the Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor?

Ash was impressed by the build quality and felt the Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor was robust enough to last beyond the baby stage. “I wouldn’t be worried using this for more children in years to come. Very durable and robust,” she says.

She also felt the quality was appropriate for the price, adding: “I think that the quality reflects the price on this one most certainly.”

What’s it like to use day to day?

The Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor turns on quickly and is ready to use within seconds, which Ash found particularly convenient. She also liked the full-room view, which can be adjusted remotely through the app, although she chose not to use the app regularly because some features require a subscription.

“The full room view is amazing! It’s super easy to jump on the app and move the camera view around whilst having a little scroll on your phone on an evening like we all do! There is a very tiny delay but only about 1 second, as expected with any monitor.”

Ash also tested the two-way talk function and found the sound loud and clear. She liked that the monitor is lightweight and easy to pack away, making it practical for taking away, although the camera does need to be plugged in.

She was less impressed with some of the app's subscription-based features, particularly audiobooks, longer video playback and the diary function. “They all feel unnecessary to me,” she says, adding that she preferred the straightforward monitoring functions.

How is the video quality of the Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor?

Video quality was one of the Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor's strongest points during testing. Ash found the 2K picture sharp and clear, even when checking on her son overnight using the infrared night vision. The camera's remote pan, tilt and zoom functions also make it easy to view different areas of the room rather than being limited to a fixed angle.

“The 2k video quality works great even in the middle of the night. A tiny delay but only what’s to be expected with it being a baby monitor. The zoom and tilt is fantastic in seeing all of the room! It could be used in a play room or anywhere it’s brilliant. The video is smooth.”

How is the audio quality?

Audio quality is another strong point, with Ash finding the sound loud and clear. The microphone is also sensitive, picking up quieter noises as well as sounds from elsewhere in and around the house.

“It’s very loud and clear I turn the volume down while I’m watching tv on an evening because it picks everything up. Including when I let my dogs out on a night and they bark in the garden….it picks that up too! Whenever my son turns over in bed or snores like he always does I hear it every time!”

What is the battery life like of the Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor?

Battery life is one of the weaker points of the Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor, particularly if you're relying on the parent monitor overnight. Ash found she needed to charge it after each use, and the screen's sleep mode also means you can't simply glance at it to check on your child.

“The battery life on the monitor isn’t great unfortunately. It needs to be charged after every use which is surprising to me because the monitor goes into a sleep mode sort of thing which doesn’t show the display all the time. So, you can’t just glance over and check on baby you have to press a button for it to work. If you’re using the app instead of the monitor though this obviously wouldn't be a problem.”

The ChillaxCare app lets you view the camera remotely, control pan, tilt and zoom, receive alerts, monitor room temperature and play lullabies.

How is the signal quality?

Signal strength was another positive during Ash's testing. She used the monitor upstairs in her son's bedroom while the Wi-Fi router was downstairs in the living room, and also took the monitor into the garden without losing the connection.

“I will be honest I haven’t used it away from home, but the connection in our house felt easy to use and has never disconnected throughout the testing period. I have no reason to believe it would be unreliable elsewhere. The connection is still stable when I take the monitor out into the garden.

you can rely on this overnight, but only if the monitor is fully charged every day. our WiFi router is in the living room and our sons bedroom is upstairs. Wherever I have taken it around the house it’s never lost connection.”

How easy is it to clean?

Ash didn't come across any cleaning issues during several weeks of testing and says the monitor didn't need resetting, even after being left unused for a couple of days.

“I have tested for several weeks now and never needed to reset it. Even after not using it for a couple of days! Easily wiped down and no strange nooks or crannies to clean.”

Is the Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor good value for money?

At around £140, the Chillax DM568 Candle baby monitor sits in a similar price bracket to the Hubble Go Baby Plus baby monitor, which is currently £149.99. Both offer 2K video, a 5-inch parent screen, app connectivity, pan, tilt and zoom, night vision, temperature monitoring and two-way talk. The Chillax also includes a built-in nightlight, while Ash particularly valued its ability to combine several features she would otherwise have bought separately.

“As mentioned, I think it would be possibly worth it if I’d have got this camera first with all the built-in extras! But if it was just being used as a baby monitor alone then I think the price would be a bit steep. Even steeper if you were to pay the app subscription and get the upgrade!”

The Hubble Go Baby Plus has a few advantages of its own, including a portable battery-powered camera and access to its app without a subscription fee for the basic features. For Ash, though, the Chillax's combination of picture quality, nightlight, temperature monitoring, soothing sounds and full-room view makes it a more compelling purchase if those extras would replace other products.
