How we tested the VTech RM7766HD Smart Pan and Tilt Baby Monitor

Mum-of-two Laura used the VTech RM7766 over a testing period of two months to keep an eye on her eight-month-old baby and three-year-old toddler. During this time the monitor was used for both children's day naps and night time sleep in a variety of locations including at their grandparents' home and on holiday. Laura took a series of in-depth notes on a variety of important factors including the monitor's ease of use, video and audio quality, safety, durabilty and overall value for money. She then provided an overall verdict based on all these factors.

The VTech RM7767HD Smart Baby Monitor comes with the parent unit, camera, charger, plug cables as well as a wall mount and screws.

The first thing that struck me was just how big the screen on the monitor is! So much bigger than any other monitor I’ve used before.

How easy is the monitor to set up and use for the first time?

"Very easy to set-up, a quick read of the instructions and it was pretty much plug in and go."

The instructions come on a large, fold out piece of paper which at first left me unsure where to start but once I got into it they were quite straightforward and easy enough to follow

How does the monitor look?

"The 7in screen is very impressive and buttons at the right hand side are easy to use. It also feels fairly robust."

What is the monitor like to use day-to-day?

In direct mode the camera is pretty much a plug-in and go monitor with the basic features very easy to use. This is mainly how I used the monitor.

"If this doesn’t work for you then with a little bit more effort you can set up the connection via WiFi or you can download and use the mobile app instead of the monitor to have visibility and control of the camera."

Is the monitor's WiFi connection safe from hacking?

"Yes, it is a secure connection. If this is a concern then the instructions give a list of links to read into this in more detail."

What is the video quality like on the VTech RM7766HD monitor?

Whilst the screen is very large and therefore fairly easy to see, the quality of the image is brilliant, even when using the zoom capabilities.

What is the audio quality like on the VTech RM7766HD?

"The quality of sound is pretty good and nicely clear, there is no interference or background buzzing that I have experienced with other monitors."

Does the monitor have any special features or unique selling points?

"There’s lots on offer with this monitor, it features the temperature, has a nightlight on the camera with multiple colour options, it plays white noise, again with choice of sounds, volume and a timer setting.

The monitor can be set to a mode where the screen is only on when a noise is made (excellent for night use as the screen light doesn’t keep you awake). The pan and zoom ability of the camera are fantastic. The mobile app allows camera visibility away from the monitor. It can be used and accessed remotely allowing settings such as talk-back, camera control, light and sound control etc.

How is the signal quality on the RM7766HD monitor?

"I have found that the signal quality of the monitor is not the best that I’ve experienced; however, if you need or would rather, you can set the monitor up through the WiFi or use the mobile app if you need better quality. This is a plus in houses that struggle with direct mode only monitors."

Do you think this monitor offers good value for money?

"I think that the monitor offers fair value for money as it does offer a lot more than just a video/audio monitor."

Overall verdict

This monitor offers everything that I want and use in a monitor and more.

"The zoom is handy in offering flexibility in where I could position the camera but still get a good view of my baby and the size of the monitor made visibility in larger rooms (such as when cooking at the other end of the kitchen to where I had placed the monitor) excellent. "

The WiFi connection and mobile app make this an incredibly flexible choice for parents to choose which method of use suits them best.

"Although in some situations the large screen on the monitor is a positive, I found it to be too big when used overnight, it took up a huge amount of space on the bedside table and I found it quite annoying. Really, though, this is about personal preference and how you use the monitor."
