Axkid Minikid Core review: a compact Swedish Plus Tested extended rear-facing car seat

EDITOR'S NOTE (9 October 2026): Axkid has issued a voluntary recall of affected Minikid Core car seats following concerns raised during additional safety testing. Consumer organisation Which? has also reported serious failures during its independent crash tests and advises parents to stop using the seat immediately.

While Axkid maintains that the seat meets legal safety requirements, it is offering free replacements for affected models. If you own a Minikid Core, we recommend following Which?'s precautionary advice and checking Axkid's recall guidance.

This review was conducted before these safety concerns came to light. We have removed our original ratings and withdrawn our recommendation of the Minikid Core in light of this new information.

Our verdict

The Axkid Minikid Core is a reassuringly sturdy car seat once installed, with the kind of safety credentials that will appeal to parents who want to keep their child rear-facing for longer. It’s not quite as intuitive to fit as the Axkid One 3, which is my four-year-old’s everyday car seat, but once I’d got my head around the belt path, load leg and recline position, it felt secure and compact in my Volvo V40.

Safety-focused at its ‘core,’ the Minikid Core allows for extended rear-facing travel from 40cm to 125cm and a maximum weight limit of 28kg, which is around age seven. It’s also Swedish Plus Tested up to 125cm, which will be a major selling point for parents who are looking beyond the basics of legal car seat approval.

The short version: the Minikid Core is better for smaller cars, but the One 3 is easier to use if you have the room. The Minikid Core took up noticeably less space in our car and felt like a more realistic option for families who want extended rear-facing in a smaller vehicle. But my daughter had less legroom than she does in the One 3 and she found it harder to climb in by herself.

Overall, the Minikid Core impressed me with its compact design and ability to fit comfortably in a smaller car without relying on ISOFIX. However, installation takes some getting used to, and legroom is worth considering if you're using it with an older preschooler.

How we tested the Axkid Minikid Core

I tested the Axkid Minikid Core for five months with my four-year-old daughter, using it as an everyday car seat in our Volvo V40.

That meant daily nursery runs, local errands and longer journeys. I looked at how easy the Minikid Core was to install, how secure it felt once fitted, how comfortable it was for an older child and how much space it took up in the car. 

My daughter’s usual car seat is the Axkid One 3, so I was keen to see how the Minikid Core compared, particularly on space, comfort and how easy it was for my four-year-old to climb in and out independently. 

I also assessed the recline, headrest adjustment, harness, side impact protection, fabric, cleaning and general day-to-day ease of use. 

The Axkid Minikid Core is available in two colours: Coastal Storm Black (which I tested) and Artic Mist Grey.

How easy is the Axkid Minikid Core to install?

The Axkid Minikid Core is installed using the vehicle seatbelt rather than ISOFIX, with an anti-rebound bar and load leg for stability. Axkid’s integrated SafeLock system holds the vehicle seatbelt securely in place, and unlike many belt-installed extended rear-facing seats, the Minikid Core doesn’t require lower tether straps. The anti-rebound bar needs to be attached first, which isn’t difficult, but is an extra job worth doing when you’re not in a rush.

There are printed fitting instructions on the seat itself, along with green guides showing where to route the vehicle seatbelt. As there are no ISOFIX points, you don’t get indicators confirming that the connectors or load leg are correctly installed, however the seat felt secure once I’d worked out what went where.

The QR code takes you to further fitting guidance, and I found Axkid’s YouTube video particularly helpful for checking the installation and recline angle. I’d still have liked a clear instruction booklet in the box though.

The Minikid Core has Axkid’s DualRecline system, with a lever at the back of the base that allows it to swivel between two angles depending on your child’s size and stage. This was the part I struggled with most, and although the YouTube video helped me make sense of it, I’d have preferred the process to be clearer from the outset.

What are the safety features like on the Axkid Minikid Core?

This rear-facing car seat is approved to UN R129 and R170 regulations, is suitable from 40 to 125cm and up to 28kg, and has passed the Swedish Plus Test up to 125cm. It can be used until your child reaches either the 125cm height limit or the 28kg weight limit, whichever comes first.

The anti-rebound bar can be adjusted into four positions to create more legroom as your child grows, while the side-impact protection twists into place on either side of the seat, depending on where it’s installed in the car. I liked this flexibility, and it was easy to attach once I’d worked out which side I needed.

The five-point harness felt secure, with a green indicator providing useful visual reassurance when fastening my child in.

How comfortable is the Axkid Minikid Core?

The Minikid Core kept my four-year-old comfortable on both everyday trips and longer journeys. The straps are well padded, the fabric feels soft and the shape of the seat gave her plenty of support. Ventilation holes help improve airflow, which is a useful feature on longer journeys.

The headrest has eight positions and is adjusted easily using a hook at the top, with the harness moving alongside it. This makes it straightforward to get the right fit, with plenty of adjustment for use up to around age seven.

My daughter did, however, prefer our Axkid One 3 because it gives her more legroom and is easier to climb into independently. The Minikid Core didn’t feel cramped, but it’s noticeably more compact – one of its main advantages if you have a smaller car. The anti-rebound bar can also be adjusted through four positions to create more legroom as your child grows.

Older children can safely sit rear-facing with their legs bent or crossed, but those used to a roomier seat may still notice the difference. Compared with the One 3, my daughter had less space to stretch out.

As I tested the Minikid Core with my four-year-old, I wasn’t able to properly try out the included newborn insert, although it felt soft and well padded to the touch.

How much space does the Axkid Minikid Core take up in the car?

This is where the Minikid Core really impressed me. Extended rear-facing car seats offer excellent safety benefits, but they can take up a fair amount of room from front to back. In our Volvo V40, the Minikid Core felt noticeably less bulky than the Axkid One 3, making it a better fit for a smaller car.

The One 3 is easier to use and gives my daughter more legroom, but it’s also a bigger piece of kit. If you have limited space in the back or simply don’t want the car seat to dominate your car, the more compact Minikid Core feels like a practical alternative.

What is the Axkid Minikid Core like to use day to day?

Once installed, the Minikid Core was straightforward to use day to day. The harness has a button and pull strap for loosening and tightening, while the padded straps sat comfortably on my four-year-old's shoulders. 

Unlike the Axkid One 3, there are no magnets to hold the harness open. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s one of those small conveniences you notice when you’re tackling the nursery run every day. My daughter also found the Minikid Core harder to climb into independently than the Axkid One 3 - another minor detail, but one that made getting out of the door slightly less seamless for us.

The recline lever is tucked away at the back of the base, so it wasn’t immediately obvious how to use it. Position one is designed for babies measuring 40 to 60cm, while children from 61 to 125cm can use positions one or two. Once I’d set it up for my four-year-old, it wasn’t something I needed to adjust.

How easy is the Axkid Minikid Core to clean?

The Minikid Core uses recycled fabrics, and its cover can be removed and machine-washed at 30°C - exactly what you want from a car seat likely to face daily nursery runs, snack crumbs and the occasional mystery stain.

I didn’t encounter any major spills during testing, but the fabric felt durable and everyday marks were easy to deal with. 

Is the Axkid Minikid Core good value for money?

At £350, the Minikid Core sits somewhere in the middle of the extended rear-facing market. It’s not a budget buy, but it offers Swedish Plus Tested safety, a high 28kg weight limit and use from 40 to 125cm.

For a baby or younger toddler, it offers good long-term value, with enough adjustment to last until around seven years old. For an older child, comfort may depend on the amount of space they’re used to. My four-year-old fitted securely and remained comfortable, but preferred the One 3 overall. Ultimately, the Minikid Core is the neater and more affordable option for our car, while the One 3 offers greater convenience and more legroom.
