"As everyone knows, I’m in the privileged position of never needing to work again and of not needing state run services, but I once lived hand to mouth. I was one of the women who couldn’t afford to insulate herself from potential physical harm and who fell into the categories of both domestic abuse and sexual assault victim. Large numbers of women who’ve never been poor, who’ve never worked the kind of job where they’d be vulnerable to predatory men and who’ve never needed a rape crisis centre have spent the last few years vilifying members of their own sex for fighting to retain their hard-won rights and single-sex spaces, in ways that have shocked and disgusted me. I freely confess that I feel an extra layer of abhorrence for any woman who claims to be a feminist while doing it."

THIS ⬆🔥

And I didn't think I coud love her any more than I already did. 💚🤍💜

JollySmall · 21/10/2026 17:19

That is fabulous!

HermioneWeasley · 21/10/2026 17:20

I have so much admiration for her

murasaki · 21/10/2026 17:20

As usual, crystal clear, not transphobic in the slightest, and a timely reminder that it's been 6 years and we're still not out of the woods.

Imdunfer · 21/10/2026 17:21

Yup, hence my recent thread whether it was possible to be a feminist and support trans rights to be in single sex spaces at the same time. (The answer is no.)

With her all the way!

TheKeatingFive · 21/10/2026 17:22

Fantastic

murasaki · 21/10/2026 17:25

Reddit is going to go tonto. Luckily I have half a pack of choc chip cookies and some time later.....

BlueLegume · 21/10/2026 17:27

Perfect timing. ❤️

CardboardScott · 21/10/2026 17:29

Anyone else have tears running down their face while reading it?

UncleTed · 21/10/2026 17:30

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I am eternally grateful to Jo Rowling for everything she has done, and continues to do for women and girls.

Keeptoiletssafe · 21/10/2026 17:30

I have been reading the horrendous graphic details from the young women in the Russell Brand court case. Then reading this essay and thinking about power imbalances. Very sobering.

Yeah me too it's been horrible. I'm glad we have JK fighting for women's safety...

twolattes · 21/10/2026 17:34

She’s incredible

Yes, the section on privileged women really hit through, didn't it.

Yup. JKR says everything I believe but so much more eloquently. ❤️

saveforthat · 21/10/2026 17:36

Fantastic.

heathspeedwell · 21/10/2026 17:39

I'm reminded of the recent HEPI poll that shows rich, white female students are more likely to support gender ideology than working class, black or Asian students. It's such a luxury belief.

But it was very heartening to see that the majority of students now reject gender ideology.

"Female students showed 33% support for biological males in women’s changing rooms compared with 26% among male students. Students from more privileged ABC1 backgrounds expressed 33% approval versus 26% among working-class C2DE respondents.
Ethnic patterns were pronounced. Just 22% of Black students and 24% of Asian students supported biological males accessing women’s facilities, compared with 36% of White students."

Fucking incredible. Absolute queen.

CompleteGinasaur · 21/10/2026 17:40

Thank you, Jo Rowling. You're an absolute diamond.

She should consider a career as a writer.

Tithe · 21/10/2026 17:41

Also welling up.

i can remember clearly when her publicist retracted a tweet ‘like’, the hope that someone I knew intrinsically was such a decent humane person would be on our side, then that hope briefly dashed before she then sent that Maya supporting tweet. Those were dark days. We’re not out of the woods yet though, see all the current fawning over hunter schaffer ‘bottom surgery’ 😱

serialgrannie · 21/10/2026 17:43

As a an elderly feminist I have watched with horror at what has happened to hard-won women's rights in this country over the last 20 years as a result of the rise of gender ideology. That political leaders of all persuasions have been complicit has been astonishing. J K Rowling has been a shining beacon of reason, compassion, understanding and intellectual honesty in all this and has been vilified as a result. Her essay today is wonderful. Can I suggest that everyone sends a copy of this essay to their local councillors/MP, council leaders, union leaders and anyone else they can think of and ask for a response. It would be interesting to hear the opinions of Zac Polanski, Lisa Nandy, David Tennant, among others.

Zapx · 21/10/2026 17:45

Where would we be without her ❤️

PronounssheRa · 21/10/2026 17:45

She really is a star.

I know loads of other women have been plugging away at this for years and I won't name check because it will take too long. But it took JKR speaking up with her wealth and uncancellability, to help tip that power imbalance just a little. Its nowhere where it needs to be still, and still stacked against women, but i dread to think where we would be now without her.
