I can’t wait to see who drafts my girl Enes Kanter Freedom. 😂

In a video, the former New York Knicks and Boston Celtics star said: 'After careful consideration and reviewing the current eligibility guidelines, I’m officially declaring myself a @WNBA prospect.

'If simply declaring who you are is all that’s required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA.

'My team and I have carefully examined the WNBA’s eligibility criteria and governing framework surrounding self-identification and inclusion. Based on the current guidelines, I can and am officially declaring my eligibility for the upcoming WNBA draft in April 2027.”

”See you at training camp.”

Things are escalating

Male Players Are Testing The WNBA’s Eligibility Rules. Here’s How Other Women’s Sports Decide Who Can Play
In another social media post, Kanter Freedom claimed he had talked to eight male players from the NBA, the G League and the European leagues who said they were interested in participating in the WNBA draft. “The NBA G- League pays players $45,000 a year, while the WNBA top players earn $1.4 Million. Those ‘men’ could earn an extra $1,355,000 a year by just identifying as women,” he wrote. Kanter Freedom was ejected from a WNBA game last Sunday after a confrontation with a player over this issue.

Given that basketball is an Olympic sport, I don't understand why they don't just copy the rules used by the Olympics.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 27/08/2026 17:04

Something came through my news feed where the said the capture was due to the LGBTQ status of many players/fans. That sounds reasonable as I believe we see that in women’s football too.

Because it’s likely they already have males with DSDs in the competition. They know that implementing a a sex screening policy will confirm what many have suspected for a while about certain players, and they’ll have to explain why they’ve been allowing males in the WNBA already.

The statement they release can go:
We did not previously realise that some players with a female habitus are actually male. We apologise unreservedly to those players for failing to check their eligibility sooner. It is entirely down to our failure to verify sex sooner that those players have been allowed to believe that they are eligible when in fact they are not.

NotBadConsidering · 27/08/2026 23:40

Yes, that’s what they should say, and what they should do, but they know it will make them look stupid, and they’re too proud and vain to humble themselves like that.

So they’re trying to find a way around it that doesn’t involve that. They can’t. They are stuck.

Option one: release a statement like that and accept the humbling that comes with it and have to be contrite, or apologise, or self damaging (people will probably have to lose it change their jobs as a result)

Option two: keep pretending males in women’s sport isn’t a problem until their hand is forced and they look stupid then.

Basically, they need to rip the band aid off and swallow their pride.

For sure, but has any org done such a mea culpa so far? I don't think so, and I don't think it'll happen anytime soon. Especially in the US.

murasaki · 28/08/2026 00:00

They'd also need to apologise to all the other players, but that won't happen either.

Who are these mystical males playing in the WBNA ?

Brittney Griner is definitely female.

Name the ones people think are male

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 28/08/2026 17:20

I'd definitely be interested in Britney Griner publicly taking that cheek-swab and putting paid once for all to rumours about her sex. I'd think it would be to Griner's advantage to do so, on the whole: all the scuttlebutt must be a complete pain, being liable to mess things up unexpectedly and at the very least causing unnecessary stress.

Have you seen results from a cheek swab then? To be so certain. Or is it more an unverified personal opinion?

Rather reminds me of the line ‘Oh! let us never, never doubt What nobody is sure about!‘ from ‘The Microbe’ by Hilaire Belloc. When people lack solid facts, the more they exude an unfounded confidence to compensate for said dearth to bolster what only amounts to their opinion.

Griner will pass. She is female.
If you listen to the original Sophie Cunningham interview she mentions "BG"

If Putin could have proved that a USA male had played in the Russian female basketball leage
HE WOULD

he did not because she is female

Are there any other players that people have doubts about ?

How strange that you seem quite to have failed to read the post you replied to. It quite specifically did not cast any doubt on the individual's sex, merely suggested that it would be easily possible to quash any further doubts expressed about it by anyone.

But then, the guilty flee where no man pursueth, so you probably just assume attack where none has been made, and take offence where none has been given.

Name the dopers in the WNBA?

That's right. We still have rules against doping though. We are still proactive with rules and regulations even if they may not be needed.

This 'name them' is an irrelevant and desperate and pitiful attempt at an argument. And if it hasn't happened so far, what is the big deal about being proactive and putting in safeguards? And considering that it always could happen and has happened at college level....

I am totally in favour of SRY screening.
It should be brought in to all female sport ideally at about age 15
(so any 'surprises' are private)

I have no idea why the WNBA are being so dumb about Kanter

I think its highly unlikely that there are male players in the WNBA at present.
Griner is the one everybody mentions, but she is female.

I agree with most of this, SRY screenings at 15, Griner is female, and unlikely that there are males at present. The point is that there could be, so the screenings are essential amd codifying needs to follow.

Kanter is merely testing the point.

If there aren't any males present, there doesn't appear to be a problem to solve never mind it being essential.

Exactly , so no need to kick up a fuss about being tested if you've got nothing to hide.

Yes.

No need to worry about offending any current players if there are no male people in the female competition.

He really has the language down.

Royce White 🇺🇸

I’m new to the Trans community and I’m not even sure what Roselyn is really trying to say… But the idea that I have to take hormones is disgusting cis normative bigotry. If gender is fluid, hormones are literally fluid. People who say I have to have surgery or take hormones are bullies.

There is because it makes the matter clear beyond all doubt and for all time. Saves any further accusation against eg Britney Griner of being in the wrong game. And why grope around in the dark if there is a perfectly good flashlight available?

Difficulty minuscule, cost minimal, and in any case, why not? Unless it is to be not-done in order to facilitate cheating at some later date, and I'm sure nobody wants that.

moto748e · Yesterday 19:38

And as is often pointed out, sex testing is vastly less intrusive than drug-testing, which all elite athletes have to undergo.
