Croeso/Welcome to the Bluestocking Women's Pub, with our lovely gerbil staff, the icy Mojito foot-bath for those of you fed up with the heat, a Quilting/Craft Nook, lots of yummy food and drink with zero calories, gluten, or allergens, the Gerbil World Cup, and a brand new magic pool that becomes a babbling brook whenever you want it to!

Come on in! All women welcome! (Men welcome at The Staunch Ally pub down the road aways)

(security provided by the capybaras, lovely folk, but try not to get in their way)

(oh, and don't mention triangles, please. Gubbins gets very overexcited)

(did we mention the Gerbil World Cup?)

Good luck

I missed that. Good luck @MyrtleLion!

EdithStourton · 26/07/2026 22:04

Good luck, Myrtle! Lots and lots of good luck.

Also best wishes to Empress for her crown (sadly the dental rather than the regal variety).

@MyrtleLion while I would love the title, I would feel much happier if that helps you with your interview preparation. You are important; we are ephemeral.

I think I am trying to say that you should put yourself first.

I have a regular heron visitor, and I always enjoy seeing her (because she can't reach the fish, thank goodness). Her chosen perch varies.

I hope dentistry goes smoothly, Kitty.
Great knitting work, Myrtle, and good luck with the interview. Yikes to Weary for more dental trauma, as well.

Oh, thank you!

Did interview preparation this afternoon and will do more tomorrow morning. I try and keep the evenings for relaxing if possibly.

Writing Gosie’s stories is a lot of fun for me, and it’s a way of relaxing before tomorrow. I am very excited about her story and I get excited knowing you are all excited waiting for it.

AsWithGlad · 26/07/2026 23:25

All the best for tomorrow, Myrtle. I’ll be thinking of you around noon.

Durham Cathedral, eh?

RumNotRun · 27/07/2026 06:28

@AngleofReposeyes, Lamby Way. My sister and I walked round one of the lakes a few years back. She decided she then also wanted to run around it as she hadn't done enough exercise, so I sat by the lake to wait for her. I kept being approached by cygnets and every time I moved away, they'd follow me. I was worried that the parent swans would think I was trying to steal their babies and attack but thankfully they didn't seem bothered! One of them did leave me a beautiful long swan feather which becomes my cat Fred's favourite toy for months.

Good Luck Myrle

I've been tired (like most of us) since the hot weather started, and my eyes have been finding it hard to focus, particularly as the day advanced. Not quite worried enough to get them tested, hoping it would resolve. Then on Saturday evening when I was cleaning my specs I realised both the little gizmos that are supposed to keep them away from my nose have fallen off. No wonder I couldn't see straight.

I'll be off to spec savers before crafts (and after cleaning the sore spots on Booboo's belly) this morning.

Good Luck @MyrtleLion - my fingers are firmly crossed.

I'm off to knitting group shortly - Monday is the one day I set an alarm, and it is inevitably the night where I don't sleep well, because I know the alarm will be going off, so I'm counting down how many hours sleep I can get before it goes off.

backformoreofthesame · 27/07/2026 09:34

Now I normally wake at 7 or before but if I know I need to be up by say 9, I have to set the alarm to be able to sleep

backformoreofthesame · 27/07/2026 09:34

And good luck myrtle

backformoreofthesame · 27/07/2026 09:35

And good morning everyone else

backformoreofthesame · 27/07/2026 09:36

DH is trying to train me to get my greetings in before anything else as it does make people uncomfortable if you get the order wrong - I do see that - I just get worried I’ll forget what I have to say

which is usually stupid. Rock up at hotel and saying hello first won’t make me forget I have a reservation will it?

EdithStourton · 27/07/2026 10:19

Good luck, Myrtle. Thinking of you.

I rather like Durham cathedral. No messing about with that one. 'I am big and you are small, so watch it, okay?'

MyrtleLion · 27/07/2026 10:23

I don't know if it's the ADHD meds, the new weighted blanket or the interview but I fell asleep around 11pm, woke with a start just after midnight and couldn't fall asleep again until 4.20am. I had to remove the blanket. I wonder if I was trying to turn over and couldn't because it was too heavy. 🤔

I will stop using it while I get used to the medication and while it's so hot and try again when it's cooler.

I will also post a synopsis of Book I and a link to the Contents page before I post Chapter 1 of Book II. New readers can then read without wondering what's going on.

Thanks for all your good wishes for the interview. It's a strict 30 minute chat online; six questions from the panel and no questions from me.

Chickadeeinme · 27/07/2026 12:41

I’m just awake and realizing @MyrtleLionis probably just finishing off her interview. Fingers crossed - I hope it went well.

MyrtleLion · 27/07/2026 13:20

I don’t think it was great. My camera was on but not working but we went ahead and I was a minute late as a result trying to fix it.

I felt completely blindsided by the questions. Standard tell us about a time competency questions and I went blank. I have a brilliant story about rescuing an event when the organisers pulled out the day before and couriered the equipment to our office. I had to source some specialists and get the equipment to the venue and ensure 100 kids had a great time. Did not say that when they asked me about a crisis I’d managed. They asked about my worst crisis and even now I can’t think of anything else yet I’m brilliant in a crisis.

I did answer and I know some of my responses about team management and increasing revenue were good. One of the panel said sounds very similar to our organisation, so maybe I’ll get the interview in person next week, but I’m not hopeful.

if I had had the questions in advance I would have been better prepared.

Anyway, moving on.

Synopsis of Book I incoming.

Book I of The Gosie Chronicles Synopsis

Gosie and the Hidden Symbol

Gosie (pronounced Go-See) is a gerbil investigator who works out of the Bluestocking, a women-only pub run by gerbils. She operates alone, on her own terms, and her curiosity is piqued by a painting.

A piece in a half forgotten side room at Ardnamurchan turns out to be connected to an earlier work Gosie already suspected existed, one that could change the accepted timeline for a body of art if authenticated. But she isn’t the only one who has found it. Someone else has been there first, competent enough to test the surface but not competent enough to finish. That changes the shape of the investigation. It isn’t just attribution anymore. It’s a race.

The trail takes her to Android’s lab, where the painting is placed under proper scrutiny and turns out to be too coherent to be entirely what it claims. It takes her to a French philosopher named @MarieDeGournay, whose front room is the place where the facts stop shifting under her feet, and who gives her a single lead rather than a lecture: these things moved through women, copied and passed on, not hidden but circulated. That lead sends Gosie to Oxford and a small, semi-private manuscript collection.

From there the case widens. Ireland, canals, towpath intelligence, a set of shipping routes that don’t add up on paper. Along the way she picks up allies who are patrons of the Bluestocking and who each bring their own skills: @Hedgehogforshort, @AngleofRepose, @Magpiecomplex, @Boiledbeetle and others. The routes lead to Plymouth, where Gosie is arrested by the police and The Bluestocking hires Octavia Briefcase, a barrister ocelot with a fierce reputation to represent her.

When it turns out that Gosie has actually been kidnapped by smugglers pretending to be police, the Bluestocking sends out a successful rescue mission led by the intrepid pirate, Swashbuckled on her galleon,The Dreadnork, which leads to a three week transatlantic voyage chasing a smugglers’ yacht, ending in Portland, Maine. There they find a hidden cargo and a paper trail to a facility run by Talmere, the largest conglomerate in the world.

Inside, Gosie finds crates marked only as Component. Stone fragments. Documents. Seeds. Paintings. All logged against a project called Aurelia, with a completion percentage climbing close toward one hundred and a status marked Green. Nobody helping her knows what Aurelia is. What they do know is that whoever is building it has resources, patience, and a plan that has been running for a long time. The crew thwarts the completion of the Aurelia project by having all the components seized by Canadian Customs.

The case ends with an unscheduled boarding of a smugglers’ yacht, a homecoming, and one small fragment of paper still in Gosie’s pocket: a donation record from Talmere for a chapter house window fund, paid on behalf of someone called the Margrave. The crew returns to the Bluestocking where the gerbils are rewarded with exotic sunflower seeds for their help, and Gosie tells no one else about the fragment..
