Croeso/Welcome to the Bluestocking Women's Pub, with our lovely gerbil staff, the icy Mojito foot-bath for those of you fed up with the heat, a Quilting/Craft Nook, lots of yummy food and drink with zero calories, gluten, or allergens, the Gerbil World Cup, and a brand new magic pool that becomes a babbling brook whenever you want it to! Come on in! All women welcome! (Men welcome at The Staunch Ally pub down the road aways) (security provided by the capybaras, lovely folk, but try not to get in their way) (oh, and don't mention triangles, please. Gubbins gets very overexcited) (did we mention the Gerbil World Cup?)

The chevrons just look odd [or like wiggly eyebrows, as Shiny] said, but the asterisks make it look like you were swearing!

Somebody - it might have been Joseph O'Connor the novelist, who is a very witty writer of 'light' pieces for radio etc - said that Dublin people use the F word so profusely that a transcript of a conversation between Dubliners would have so many asterisks in it it would look like a map of the Milky Way😂

In Russian, they use a sweary word which has the literal translation of "wh*re", but is more akin to the Fife "Yahoorye!"

It cropped up in a Russian linguistics class one time. The lecturer wrote it on the board and I stuck up my hand to say "Oh...I heard that in Moscow...only they pronounce it 'blyet'."

The lecturer looked most discomfited by the fact that the only girl in the class had commented. (This is the same lecturer who once slid right under a desk during a tutorial.) He stammered "Ah....Yes...That's an accurate Muscovite pronunciation," and then came to a standstill.

One of the boys stopped the uncomfortable silence by cheerfully calling out "Aye...in Voronezh [where he'd been on his placement] they use it in place of the comma!"

As promised!

The stitch markers are to show the right side and top of the square so I don’t have to worry about it later.

The ball of wool is the colour I boiled for the darkest squares but I think it has too much green in it and will buy navy.

I got mine done with a general anaesthetic so I don't know whether they used a lawnmower, but it sure felt like it.

Thank you, I meant bought not boiled. We only boil beetles here, not wool.

I hired my assistant by phone from a temp agency just before I had a bone graft for implant surgery in 2021. The bruise was huge and as we were fully remote I didn’t turn on my camera for a week. She was brilliant and I hired her permanently very quickly. I did have a sedative for that.

The temperature will be mid-30s in the next week. The Walrus is taking a week’s leave as we’re not going away this year. We’ve agreed to spend Wednesday together (originally day drinking) but it will be very warm.

Interview tomorrow at 12.05pm.

Then Chapter 1 of The Gosie Chronicles Book II will be published very soon after that.

No cranes in our bit of Mid-Wales, Angle, but we are one of the centres of the revival of the red kite in the UK. By the early 1900s only a few kites survived in remote areas of rural Wales and they were extinct everywhere else in the UK. The first feeding station in Wales was set up less than 20 miles from us, before young birds from Wales and Spain were reintroduced to Scotland and the Chilterns in the late 80s/early 90s. Now from from rare glimpses they are a common sight here and elsewhere. Such magnificent birds.

@AngleofRepose I haven't noticed any cranes in the deepest darkest depths of Cardiff, but I will keep my eyes peeled. My friend has just got a job driving bin lorries and will be based up the road at a local rubbish tip. There are some lakes across the road from the tip and herons often hang out there.

The tip has also been known to have a feral cat colony, so I have told him to keep an eye out for abandoned kittens.

Rum, that's down by Lamby Way, isn't it? I remember when they first started to develop it. Must be great for wildlife now.

The first egrets I ever saw in the UK were down by the water near the "new" nature reserve by St. David's hotel. That was at least 20 years ago now.

@DeanElderberry Cranes at Slimbridge! That sounds familiar, must've read about them somewhere, because I haven't visited in decades. I hadn't realized that they had bred along the Welsh banks. Perhaps they will make their way west and south at some point. I'd love to see them breeding near the ponds and lakes along the Valleys and Ogmore Vale. Maybe someday, if I live long enough 😄

I had the implant bone graft and surgery earlier this year and am having the crown put on the titanium peg fairly soon. Luckily I haven’t had anything like your experience. I am going to have another one next year though, because I have a cavity coming under the crown on one of my front top teeth, and that is one I’m not looking forward to at all. I wish we had teeth like whatever species it is that just grows new ones when the old one goes. Bad design feature - I shall complain to God if I ever get the opportunity.

FWIW, one of my front teeth is an implant (with bone graft) and it was all very straightforward - no bruising at all!

I do feel very lucky that, although I've had plenty of health issues in my life, I've always had really good teeth. Very little sugar growing up and fluoridated water in my town from when I was about 10 I think.
