When can you stop being your teenager's taxi service - while still staying in the loop?

Parenting teenagers can involve a surprising amount of time behind the wheel. School, clubs, sports, seeing friends... somehow there’s always someone who needs dropping off or picking up, usually at exactly the least convenient time.

And while you might quite like to retire from your role as unpaid taxi driver, handing over a bit more independence can feel like a big step. You want them to be able to get themselves around, but that doesn’t necessarily stop you wondering where they are, who they’re with and whether they’ve arrived safely.

So, when is your teenager ready to start travelling more independently - and how can you give them a bit more freedom without being completely out of the loop?

How do you know when your teenager is ready?

There’s no exact age when a teenager suddenly becomes ready to travel independently. Some will be confident navigating public transport or arranging journeys earlier than others, so it’s worth thinking about how your own teen handles responsibility.

Are they willing to stick to agreed plans? Can you trust them to check in when they say they will? Would they know what to do if something went wrong, and are they confident enough to recognise when a situation doesn’t feel right?

Communication is key, too. Make sure they know their full address, have a charged phone with them and know how to contact you if plans change.

If they’re going to travel by taxi or private-hire vehicle, talk through what they should check before getting into a car, including making sure the vehicle colour or registration and driver match the details they’ve been given.

You could also talk through different scenarios beforehand: what would they do if they thought they were in the wrong car, a journey appeared to be going off course or they simply felt uncomfortable?

Many Mumsnet users believe learning to travel independently is an important part of growing up.

“I believe in kids learning through doing. At 12 mine could happily get on a train and work out what to do if stuff went wrong,” says Mumsnet user Mcdhotchoc.

“You’re actually doing her a favour by teaching her how to get on in the real world. So many kids get taken everywhere by car and get dropped off here, there and everywhere, then they grow up and have no idea how to be an adult. It’s a life skill that they need to learn early on,” adds Icouldwriteabookonmydisastrouslife.

Setting sensible boundaries

More independence doesn’t have to mean complete freedom straight away. Setting some ground rules can help both of you feel more comfortable:

Use a reputable service: Make sure your teenager knows not to get into a vehicle unless the registration, make, model and driver details match the information provided when the journey was booked.

Check the car before getting in: They should check the driver and vehicle details before starting their journey. With Uber for Teens, these details are available in both the parent and teen app.

How Uber for Teens works

1. Uber Teen accounts are designed for 13 to 17-year-olds and allow teenagers to request their own rides through an account linked to their parent or guardian’s Family profile.

2. Parents or guardians invite their teenager to create an account, and the teen completes a mandatory safety onboarding before taking their first trip.

3. Once they’re set up, teenagers can request their own rides, while parents can follow their journey through Live Trip Tracking and receive real-time status updates.

Staying in the loop while they travel

For parents, handing over the driving doesn’t mean having no idea what’s happening.

Uber for Teens lets parents follow their teenager’s journey in real time, as well as see information including their driver and vehicle details. They can also contact the driver while the teen is on the ride if needed, and set a monthly limit on their teen’s spending.

Teen trips also have a number of safety features automatically switched on, including PIN verification and RideCheck; a feature that detects unusual events like unexpected long stops . Trips are destination-locked, meaning the driver cannot change the destination - only the teenager can.

Teenagers can also access Uber’s on-trip safety features, including contacting emergency services, Uber Support or reporting an issue through the app. After the trip, you’ll be able to see the trip history, or report anything to Uber if you need to. 

And Uber Teen accounts aren’t limited to rides. Teenagers aged 13 to 17 can also order through Uber Eats using a supervised account, while parents can receive notifications and track the delivery. Age-restricted products that teens aren't old enough to buy are filtered out.

What Mumsnet testers thought

Uber for Teens has now earned the Mumsnet Rated badge, after 95% of parents who took part in our product test said they’d recommend the service to friends or family.

We asked 68 parents to try Uber for Teens with their families, and testers particularly valued:

• Live Trip Tracking, which 57.4% selected as the safety feature that gave them the most confidence

• Being able to see driver details and know when a journey had started and finished

• Giving their teenager more confidence and independence

• Having another option when public transport wasn’t practical

• Cutting down on the number of lifts parents needed to provide

• Having more flexibility when work, clubs, social plans and everything else collided

More than three quarters (76.5%) agreed that Uber for Teens made their teenager more independent, while 79.4% said it made managing their family schedule easier.

And compared with the other ways their teenagers could get around, 82.1% said Uber for Teens was the better option.
