Having teenagers can mean spending a surprising amount of time behind the wheel. School, clubs, sports, seeing friends... somehow there’s always someone who needs picking up just as you’re sitting down to dinner.

So having another way for teenagers to get from A to B could make family life that little bit easier.

That certainly seems to be the verdict from Mumsnet testers. Uber for Teens has earned the Mumsnet Rated badge after 95% of parents who took part in our product test said they’d recommend the service to friends or family.

We asked 68 parents to test Uber for Teens, which allows teenagers to request their own rides through a Teen account linked to their parent or guardian’s Uber account. Parents can follow the journey using Live Trip Tracking, see driver details and receive updates along the way.

The results speak for themselves: 92.6% were satisfied with Uber for Teens and 94.1% said they’d continue using it after the test.

Why parents recommend Uber for Teens

Handing over a bit more independence to your teenager can be a strange parenting milestone. You want them to have the freedom to go places without you, but that doesn’t necessarily stop you wondering whether they’ve arrived yet.

For many of our testers, Uber for Teens seemed to hit a useful middle ground.

More than three quarters (76.5%) agreed that the service made their teenager more independent, while 79.4% said it made managing their family schedule easier.

Parents particularly valued:

  • Live Trip Tracking, which 57.4% selected as the safety feature that gave them the most confidence

  • Being able to see driver details and know when a journey had started and finished

  • Giving their teenager more confidence and independence

  • Having another option when public transport wasn’t practical

  • Cutting down on the number of lifts parents needed to provide

  • Having more flexibility when work, clubs, social plans and everything else collided

And compared with the other ways their teenagers could get around, 82.1% said Uber for Teens was the better option.

Unsurprisingly, seeing friends was where it came in particularly handy. 77.9% used Uber for Teens for social outings, while almost half (48.5%) used it for after-school activities.

In other words, exactly the sort of journeys that can turn a parent into a part-time taxi driver.

What Mumsnet parents had to say

“Having the reassurance that my daughter was safe going to places and returning whilst I could get on with other things was priceless!”

“My son gained his independence and grew in confidence.”

“It’s taken the pressure off us parents having to be available for lifts.”

“I think it’s a great idea. My son loved the independence of being able to get home safely and without Mum picking up.”

“Fantastic service, really well thought out. We’ve been really impressed.”

“What a brilliant service! It is something we will continue to use.”

More independence without being completely out of the loop

The appeal for testers wasn’t simply having one fewer lift to do. It was being able to give their teenager more freedom while still knowing what was happening with their journey.

Teenagers could arrange a ride themselves rather than relying on Mum or Dad, while parents could use Live Trip Tracking and see journey and driver information while they were travelling.

That proved particularly useful for evening plans, after-school activities and those occasions when public transport simply didn’t work.

It wasn’t perfect everywhere. Some testers wanted better driver availability in their area and more consistent journey notifications. Others said they'd like the ability to edit a trip once their teenager has booked it themselves from the parent account.

That said, 54.4% of parents reported no concerns or frustrations at all.

And perhaps the most telling result is what happened once the test was over: 94.1% said they’d continue using Uber for Teens.
