The village of Asos on the Greek island of Kefalonia

The largest Greek island in the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia (or Cephalonia) is also one of the most picturesque. Famous for its diverse landscape - a dreamy mix of mountains, pristine beaches, lush forests and magical coves - it's long been a favourite with travellers of all ages.

And Kefalonia is particularly special for families. Not only does the island have 39 beaches (including Myrtos Beach that has been named one of the best in Greece) but it's home to some fascinating archaeological sites and charming villages that will captivate culturally curious families. For kids on the go there are dozens of activities to enjoy from water sports and snorkelling to horse riding, boat trips and star gazing. Don’t miss the pastel-coloured Venetian buildings of Fiskardo, one of the prettiest harbours in all of Greece

The island also delivers when it comes to accommodation with a wide range of family-friendly hotels to choose from. If you’re wondering where to stay to enjoy it all then we can help. We’ve consulted ever-knowledgeable Mumsnetters on our holidays forum to select the best family hotels in Kefalonia.

We went to the Hotel Emelisse in Fiskardo a few times (far north of the Island). The pool was lovely and they did a shuttle bus to the village and back every 30 minutes until midnight. Fiskardo is lovely - far nicer than south of the Island IMO.

Our verdict

Not only is Emelisse Nature Resort one of the best luxury hotels on the island, it's also one of the most family-friendly resorts in Kefalonia. Set among cypress hills above the picturesque fishing village of Fiskardo, the boutique resort is magazine-worthy stylish, with whitewashed walls, elegant teak and rattan furniture, and lots of breezy, open spaces.

Accommodation is housed within two-storey villas and bordered by lush gardens and tropical flowers. Best for families are the two-bedroom Family Apartments that enjoy a fully equipped kitchen along with a private shared swimming pool.

In addition to the main pool there's a children's pool, and the hotel offers direct access to the beach. There are bicycles to borrow, an open-air cinema, a tennis court, and a complimentary shuttle bus to nearby Fiskardo. Emelisse can also organise activities including yacht cruises and winery tours, scuba diving, kayaking and more.

Best for self-catering

What we like
  • Ideal location: close to the capital, some of the island’s loveliest beaches and the airport.

  • The self-catering facilities are great when travelling with young kids

  • Hotel can organise activities including private tours, boat trips, mountain biking

What we don't like
  • No direct beach access

  • The rooms are very comfortable but families of five with older children may find it a bit of a squeeze

Our verdict

Located in the southwestern corner of Kefalonia, the beautiful four-star Avithos Resort is an excellent choice for families looking for a self-catering option on the island. The resort offers a range of light-filled rooms, studios and apartments that sleep up to four, as well as maisonettes that can accommodate five. Each comes with a kitchen and private balcony or veranda.

The decor - both in the common areas and rooms - is chic and understated with earthy linens, wicker lampshades and simple but stylish wooden furniture. A large swimming pool sits at the heart of the property flanked by sun loungers with plump cushions, breezy day beds and artfully placed plants. There's also a kids' pool for younger visitors.

A buffet breakfast is available, served in the good-looking dining area. Two tavernas are within easy walking distance if you don’t feel like cooking and Argostoli, the island capital, is a 15-minute drive away.

Electra Kefalonia Hotel and Spa, Svoronata

What we like
  • Located a short walk from Ammes beach

  • The excellent spa offers myriad ways to de-stress and unwind

  • Kefalonia’s airport is just over a mile away

What we don't like
  • With no dedicated kids’ facilities, the Electra Kefalonia is more suited to teens than young children

Highly recommend the Elektra Hotel in Svoronata. It ticks all your boxes. The maisonette offers two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Absolutely fantastic hotel in every respect. Restaurant is superb, but you also have lots of lovely tavernas within easy walking distance. Bus stop just down the road for an easy and very scenic trip into Argostoli for a more lively night.

Our verdict

The elegant Electra Kefalonia is one of the best family hotels in Kefalonia. This luxurious property is perched in the southwest corner of the island, within walking distance of Ames, a golden sandy beach, and a short bus or taxi ride away from the capital, Argostoli.

The 34 rooms and suites feel a little corporate but offer plenty of space and most enjoy stunning sea views. There's a range of options for families: the Maisonette Sea View can sleep three people, the Superior Maisonette Sea View can accommodate four guests and, perfect for larger families, is the Two-Storey Premium Suite that sleeps five.

Meals are served in the breezy Turquoise Restaurant & Bar or, if you fancy a change, the pretty village of Svoronata is under a mile away, where you will find a handful of tasty tavernas.

A sparkling swimming pool sits at the heart of the property with comfy sunbeds for lounging. The hotel's spa and wellness centre is another highlight, in particular the spa treatments that include a rejuvenating Kobido facial massage, otherwise known as the massage of eternal youth.

Best for multi-generational trips

What we like
  • The spacious apartments and bungalows are very well-appointed

  • There are a number of very good beaches nearby including Makris Yialos with lots of water sports options

  • The laidback town of Lassi, filled with tavernas, cafes and shops, is a short walk away

What we don't like
  • We would love to see Marilia Villas open a swimming pool at the property

What Mumsnet users say

We always had the same 3 bedroom 'villa' - actually a ground floor apartment. There are only 6 apartments in their own grounds, all immaculate and plenty of space in the apartment, living room, full kitchen, bedrooms are 2 doubles and 1 twin. No pool but 2 minutes to nearest supermarkets and 3 minutes to Makris Gialos beach.

Our verdict

For a home away from home, consider Marilia Villas, a small collection of light-filled properties set among a lush garden near the laid-back tourist village of Lassi. With plenty of accommodation options and space, this is one of the best Kefalonia hotels for families if you're travelling with grandparents or friends.

The spacious Garden Bungalows come with three beach-themed bedrooms, a well-appointed kitchen, comfortable living area and sunny veranda. The Two-Bedroom Villa can sleep up to five people with a generous terrace overlooking the garden, furnished with a dining table and sun loungers. Groups of six should consider the Three-Bedroom Villa.

The only downside to the Marilia Villas is the lack of swimming pool but a public pool is a short, five-minute walk away. Even closer is the excellent Makris Yialos beach.

Nearest beach: Makris Yialos Beach (190 metres)

Nearest airport: Kefalonia International Airport (3 miles)

Best budget hotel

Nine Muses, Skala

What we like
  • A pretty property with terracotta-roofed buildings and towering palm trees

  • The freshwater pool makes a refreshing change from sea swimming

  • Nearby Blue Flag Skala Beach is beautiful and long, meaning that it never feels too crowded

What we don't like
  • While we love the views from the dining terrace towards the beach, we don’t love the road that separates the hotel from the ocean

We stay in Skala, at the Nine Muses hotel. It is just across the coast road from the pebbly beach, and there are other hotels along that road too. They aren’t massive though. There are lots of bars and tavernas within walking distance, and also shops.

Our verdict

For good value rooms with views look no further than the Nine Muses Hotel, one of Kefalonia's best beach hotels for families. Overlooking pretty Skala Beach, one of the most popular stretches of golden sand on the island, rooms sit within cheery two-storey pastel-coloured buildings, connected by stone pathways lined with lush plants and tropical flowers.

There are three room options at the Nine Muses: Superior Twin Rooms, Superior Double Rooms and Luxury Suites. Families travelling with younger children should opt for the two-storey suites that sleep up to four guests. Families with teens will need to book separate rooms.

There are two swimming pools to enjoy - a large freshwater main pool and a smaller, quieter triangle-shaped pool tucked away on the edge of the property. Massages and beauty treatments are available at the spa, the hotel's Avra Restaurant has an indoor and outdoor dining space and there are three bars to choose from.

Nearest beach: Skala Beach (50 metres)

Nearest airport: Kefalonia International Airport (22 miles)

  • The activities celebrate Kefalonian culture with local wine tasting and farm-to-table harvesting experiences

  • Lassi and Argostoli are both a short drive away

Another vote for white rocks Kefalonia. Lovely little pebble beach. We used to swim round to a little sandy cove. Short taxi ride into the main town.

Our verdict

Sleek, modern and incredibly stylish, White Rocks is one of our favourite luxury family-friendly hotels in Kefalonia. Located on a pine-clad peninsula, the hotel enjoys blockbuster views over the sparkling Ionian Sea as well as direct access to two Blue Flag sandy beaches and a VIP-worthy private cove.

The 160 elegant bedrooms range from cosy doubles to superior bungalows and suites with infinity pools, and each one showcases works by local artists. For families, the split-level Junior Suite Sea Front Spa is a great option with room for up to four people and access of a sea view Jacuzzi hot tub. Families of five should book the spacious Junior Suite Sea Front room or the Junior Suite Sea View.

Drinking and dining options are plentiful, with two bars and three restaurants (half board options are available), and there's an emphasis on seasonal produce from local farmers. A large swimming pool overlooks the sea, the hotel offers yoga classes and cooking lessons, and while there's no spa, in-room massages can be arranged.

Nearest beach: Direct access to two beaches and a private cove

Nearest airport: Kefalonia International Airport (3 miles)

Best family-run hotel

Regina dell’ Acqua Resort, Skala

What we like
  • Owner Anastasia and her team provide a first class service

  • Moments away from one of Kefalonia’s best beaches

  • The separate children’s pool is perfect for younger kids

What we don't like
  • Scandi design fans may find the rooms on the twee side, but we think they’re charming

  • There are no dedicated kids’ facilities outside of the children’s pool

Skala is very family friendly and has a couple of lovely restaurants up the hill which are worth a visit.

Our verdict

Guests who've stayed at Regina dell Acqua rave about this family-run beachfront hotel, some returning year after year. While it's not the most modern of properties, it is charming, and the service is exceptional.

The majority of the 38 bedrooms are cheery doubles with private balances or terraces, and some are inter-connecting, which works very well for families. For something a little more chichi, the high flying Presidential Suite enjoys its own swimming pool decorated with a mosaic dolphin.

It's easy to let the days drift by at Regina dell Acqua; as well as direct access to Skala beach (one of the prettiest on the island), the hotel has a lovely swimming pool, a separate children's pool, poolside massages and a pool bar. Meals are served in the sea-view restaurant, where you'll find tasty Greek food and there’s a good selection of tavernas and cafes within walking distance.

Nearest beach: Located on Skala beach

Nearest airport: Kefalonia International Airport (22 miles)

Is Kefalonia good for families?

Kefalonia is an extraordinarily pretty island with lots of fun family-friendly activities. Hotels tend to be more low-key and laidback than some other Greek islands (all-inclusive resorts with waterparks are few and far between) but if you’re looking for culture, sunshine and a dose of relaxed luxury then Kefalonia is the perfect place. It’s also easy to reach with regular direct flights from the UK to Kefalonia.

Which part of Kefalonia is best for families?

Many of the best family hotels in Kefalonia are grouped around the island capital, Argostoli, the popular golden sands of Skala Beach and the pretty harbour town of Fiskardo.

Of the island's 39 beaches, Myrtos Beach is the most famous, although this is better for older children owing to potentially strong currents. Fans of Captain Corelli's Mandolin will recognise Antisamos beach; it appears in the film version of Louis de Bernières' hit novel. Avithos beach is great for young kids and Argostoli Bay is where Loggerhead turtles swim in the shallows.

If you do want to get out and explore then it’s well worth hiring a car, particularly if you want to visit places like Melissani Lake, the island's famous underwater lake, or the Ancient Acropolis of Sami overlooking Sami harbour.

What’s the best family-friendly hotel in Kefalonia?

We love how different the various family-friendly hotels are in Kefalonia, but we’ve chosen Emelisse Nature Resort as our top pick because it ticks so many of our boxes: beautiful accommodation, lots of fun activities, a dedicated kids’ pool and direct beach access, and we love its location near Fiskardo, otherwise known as the St. Tropez of Greece.

How we chose our recommendations

Because we know that there’s nothing like a real recommendation, we first headed to the Mumsnet holidays forum to find out what family hotels in Kefalonia were being recommended.

We then did some research across the wider web, looking at what family hotels in Kefalonia had won accolades or been featured in ‘best choice’ lists across websites, and what customer reviews said about them. Having collated all that information, we then narrowed our list down to the best family hotels in Kefalonia at the moment.
