Start using Mumsnet PremiumSo apparently Starbucks have ‘partnered’ with mermaids
(234 Posts)So the manager of my local one told me today. She looked aghast when I said I didn’t agree with it then as I started explaining, she had to take a drive through order. We had been chatting about my eldest ds being gay and she obv thought I’d approve of this collaboration. Hah. . I’m thinking of writing down where I stand on it and passing it to her. I take my elderly mum in there every day for a coffee and pastry. Not any more. Sigh. I hate thats it’s made me ‘that’ person
What is ‘that’ person?
I cannot find anything about this online - just lots of stuff about Starbuck’s having a mermaid as a logo.
'that' person is a person who is concerned about the assault on the safeguarding of children and dismantling of women's rights, and who won't stay silent for an easy life.
You should be proud OP to be 'that' person, uncomfortable though it can be.
That manager may thank you if you do explain to her. I am immensely grateful to the women of FWR just as I'm grateful to anyone who gives me information that will help me keep my kids safe and challenge safeguarding failures. Let us know how you get on.
This is the Starbucks that claims never to have made a profit in the UK because it buys its coffee from itself at twenty million times the global market price?
Support your local independent coffee shop that pays its taxes.
Have they partnered with them? Not seen anything about this. Are you sure you got the right end of the stick?
Well, even if they haven't actually partnered with Mermaids the charity - explaining to the manager will probably peak trans another woman so it's all good....
It’s def mermaids the charity. She told me. Whether it’s just that one cafe rather than the whole company I don’t know. We go there because I can park immediately outside and my mum is elderly and infirm and can’t walk far. It’s convenient. I don’t choose to go there if I’m on my own.
Their lack of paying tax has put me off going there for years!
The charging of emergency workers for water while they were dealing with 9/11 has made me avoid Starbucks for 18+ years already. Don't need another excuse.
I'd love to boycott them but I already do because their coffee is rank.
I think either you or her have got the wrong end of the stick. There’s nothing online about this at all and even if it is true and it’s not public knowledge (yet) then the manager shouldn’t be telling customers about it anyway.
The only mermaid I can see reference to at the moment is the one on the logo.
But nothing would surprise me with such a collaboration/transaction.
Green has access to decision makers up and down the country.
scapaflo I had no idea that Starbucks did that on 9/11. Disgusting. That and a possible link to mermaids mean here is another business that has lost my custom. Thank God there are a lot of great independent coffee shops in the town where I live so I won't go short on good coffee.
Haha yes stillathing I'm with you there!
I rather like my DD’s approach to Starbucks. She never buys their coffee on principle, as she objects to their tax evasion, but she goes into their shops purely to use the toilet at their expense.
When the staff sometimes shout across to ask if she’s actually a customer, DD shouts back “No, but unlike you I pay my taxes, so I’m getting my money’s worth!”
I love your daughter Babdoc
Sounds like perhaps SB have got Mermaids as (a) charity of the year this year (charities can apply to be selected by corporate organisations). Often there's a shortlist of charities that customers/staff then vote on and an overall winner is chosen. If this is the case, then I think a few (thousand) emails explaining exactly what Mermaids have got up to is in order..
I don't buy their sorry excuse for coffee anyway.
Babcock- your daughter is Ace!
Babdoc I'm stealing that

Yeap, I never buy there myself, but this might motivate me to be a bit more annoying with my friends and family that do buy there.
Their coffee tastes like burning tyres.
I've just read that Starbucks are indeed partnering with Mermaids. They are aiming to raise £100k through sales of special cookies. They are also launching an ad this weekend where a transgender teen is trying out their new name.

Surely lots of possiblities for this to backfire given how appalling Starbucks are at getting names right....
I only really go in them when travelling, so my few coffees a month won't be hard to give up.
