So the manager of my local one told me today. She looked aghast when I said I didn’t agree with it then as I started explaining, she had to take a drive through order. We had been chatting about my eldest ds being gay and she obv thought I’d approve of this collaboration. Hah. . I’m thinking of writing down where I stand on it and passing it to her. I take my elderly mum in there every day for a coffee and pastry. Not any more. Sigh. I hate thats it’s made me ‘that’ person

Just noticed you said James becoming Gemma - that's the wrong way round, it's Gemma not being accepted at home as James and why he likes the fact he likes his preferred name of James being accepted when goes to Starbucks.

@Mrstraveller

I was just watching something I’d recorded and saw the James becoming Gemma advert. They are presenting having life changing surgery and drugs as a simple thing. You go into the Doctor’s office unhappy and come out happy and have your new name put on a cup at Starbucks.

I've seen the advert, it doesn't mention anything about surgery in the slightest, just literally a trans man going in for a coffee and trying out his preferred name/being accepted.

Thanks for the info @NicholasTopliss I'll nip over and take a look at the thread.

There is an interesting discussion over on site stuff right now, about the stalking/ manipulation/ deleting.

Oops sorry all, I leapt to the end of he thread so all of my previous post has already been discussed: especially how poor their products are!

I have seen a couple of ads on TV for Starbucks with trans people, being called what I assume is their birth name (eg when at a doc's appointment) and looking sad, then being asked for their name at Starbucks, giving their chosen name and having it written on a cup, and smiling: there is some tag line about names being important: I thought Starbucks had just decided to be woke for the ad campaign but if they have tied in with Mermaids that would explain it. I wonder why, and if they will backpedal in future?
As with many of the people posting here I cannot boycott Starbucks as I don't go in unless desperate; have always regretted it when I have as their coffee seems to be made of grit .

@FrolickingLemon
They are TRAs who stalk individual posters, derail, stir up, goad. Then they report the thread to MN and it gets deleted.

But we're not allowed to talk about things like adverts and actors playing roles and public information and the law in this country. Because...…

well no one knows why not. But we're definitely supposed to pretend not to notice. It's all very 1950s.

I don’t believe in gender identity and I recently saw a post on social media suggesting that we stop using language that legitimises “gender identity”. If we use their language we are agreeing that their ideology is real. It isn’t. Whilst I have sympathy for any child who is suffering distress at their body I do not endorse the idea of a trans child. This is entirely made up and it’s irresponsible of Starbucks to be involved in pushing this ideology

@stillathing

I'd love to boycott them but I already do because their coffee is rank.

Same.

I have a fairly normal 70s name. They frequently get it wrong. In Australia they like to add an E at the end which is not a name at all. Or sometimes I get Joe. Which is also not my name. And sounds nothing like it. I often wonder if they do it for kicks.

@youdidask Good point! Honest story..I once got Keith written on my cup....God I wish that advert had been round then....

Used to love a gingerbread latte but I stopped buying from them when they partnered with the fishy ones.

The add makes me feel sad- the reality is Boone cates what you call yourself as long as it's not rude.
The staff couldn't careless if you put the Queen of Sheba on your cup. It's sad that the advert puts so much stock in the validation of a name.

They never got mine right once and I was always meh never mind.

Yep. Same. I won't be silenced either and I do not understand why it is seen as hatred of trans. It is simply that we are fearful of the damage this kind of thing can do.

I'm sorry if this is emotive, but I do wonder if the silencers are the All Lives Matter type. Who also to shut down black people and their very legitimate concerns.

It IS worthy of discussion. And it SHOULD NOT be shut down.

@StealthMama

Have any of you just seen the advert on film 4...serving James that used to be Gemma.

This will probably get this thread deleted too.

I started the original thread. Not to have a go at transpeople, but because I am genuinely concerned about the power of very, very expensive advertising aimed at possibly vulnerable teenagers, by a company that is openly supporting and funding Mermaids.
Unfortunately, the usual people arrived to manipulate and goad, then reported the thread and, inevitably and predictably it was deleted.

For what it's worth, I was a pretty extreme tomboy between the ages of about 8 and 12. I shudder to think what would have happened to me if I had the 'choices' that are available now. I hated my breasts. I am now 49 and completely happy in my body and also happy to be a woman.

I see the latest thread has been deleted. Strange, because there were already 2 or 3 on the subject including this one.

I think it's a fair debate actually. We as women, and as Mums are concerned about the messages out there. Nothing wrong with that surely?

Sorry if I've just gotten this thread deleted. But this is not a TAAT. I simply searched earlier this week due to my (I would say, very valid) concerns about the ad.
