RESOURCE THREAD: Transwomen in Women’s Prisons

I thought it would be useful to have a resource thread dedicated to one topic with limited discussion but lots of useful quotes, facts and links. A nice little grab and go if you will.

This thread is dedicated to information regarding transwomen being housed in women’s prisons.

Feel free to add brief descriptions and links so this information can all be corralled into one resource.

Sexual assault of 4 women prisoners
A transwoman housed in New Hall women’s prison was accused (and subsequently sentenced and moved to the men’s estate) of sexually assaulting 4 female prisoners.

Tara Hudson a 26 year old transwoman was initially housed in the male estate before being moved to Eastwood Park women’s prison in Gloucestershire.

Jessica Winfield formerly Martin Ponting, 50 was imprisoned in 1995 for raping 2 girls. They were moved to Bronzefield women’s prison in Ashford after transitioning.

Journalist James Kirkup asking if the BBC are scared of the trans debate.

“I think that concern is a valid one and I’m not convinced current prison policy has sufficient regard for the wellbeing of female prisoners in this context. (There’s more to come on this issue, incidentally, but much of it is subject to court action and can’t yet be reported. But I think there are some awkward questions coming for prison chiefs and politicians alike, in due course.)”

Karen White a prisoner at women’s prison New Hall in Wakefield, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual touching at the Yorkshire prison.
Karen has since been moved to a male prison.

Shaun Pudwell AKA Michelle Lewin, 51

Michelle Lewin previously known as Shaun Pudwell who was jailed indefinitely in 2007 for grooming children, has been transferred to the women’s prison HMP Peterborough.

“She is believed to have been transferred to HMP Peterborough while awaiting gender reassignment surgery.”

That Sun article on Shaun Pudwell also says this: Figures show there are 25 transgender cons in women’s jails.

So assuming that figure is correct, there are still quite a few we don't know about.

Unlike TRAs, I am not in favour of blocking out information or perspectives that I don't like.

The point about this movement is that it crosses boundaries of class, political persuasion and choice of news information sources. Pointing to or looking at the Sun's take on an issue close to my heart isn't an endorsement.

I don't necessarily think they made the stories up, no. I just know that they have been notorious for inaccurate reporting in the past and don't want things to get derailed by TRAs picking apart the articles you post!

There are plenty of reputable news sources from all over the political spectrum that have their facts straight even if they put a right or left wing slant on it. The S*n and the Daily Fail are not among them.

MrsGuidion sadly a fair number of reputable sources if they even report things (looking at you here Guardian) are missing out pertinent facts like the crime. Or that people in women's jails were not born male.

Alex Stewart / Alan Baker

In prison for murdering a father of two he met on a gay dating site.

Transitioned in prison and moved to the female estate. Has not had surgery.

Won the Miss Greenock Fitness 2017 competition "by a country mile". The other inmates might as well not have entered. Stewart was rewarded with a trophy and goodie bag.
