It's the really extreme, really dangerous form of content that attracts the most highly engaged people on the platform,
This is widespread across social media platforms. It’s why the skewing of news balance was such a scandal after the last US election. The algorithms that put content higher up the list of what you see first dont work on any kind of notion of ‘quality’ or ‘validated and fact checked’ or ‘currently relevant.’ They work on this factor of ‘how many very engaged people will get happy/enraged and comment.’
DH showed me a really good article in this ages back and I can’t find it, but that was the gist. So stuff that’s extreme stays, and pushes out the quality/balance.
When you add that to the inherent misogyny that seems prevalent in most tech provider’s platforms its a toxic mix. Breastfeeding images removed for being offensive, violence against women staying up.
