Hi all
Delurking briefly to point you all in the direction of the Netflix release of Hannah Gadsby's Nanette - a stand up recorded at the Sidney Opera House. I just watched and she's brilliant. Fiercely feminist, funny, passionate, angry, emotional, and so so smart. I hadn't heard of her before but enjoyed it so much I had to share. Off to lurk again now.

I watched this last night and laughed and cried in equal measure.

Wow! Wow! I just watched it and have been in floods of tears - as well as laughter earlier. I have noted some of her later comments but won't post unless asked as "spoiler alert". And it needs to be seen really.

It's so powerful and so pertinent to what we talk about here - the silencing of women, the erasure of women and children's stories from history because his-story is just that; how male rights dominate because his reputation is considered more important than her body and being; how some believe him over her, because of their disordered thinking that her potential was never going to equal his. I would add some think wrongly that she would never be worth as much as him. How male sexual entitlement and violence needs to be called out at every turn.

And all of this as part of a stand-up comedy routine. I had my socks blown off. Her story is my story as mine is hers.

I think I will write to her about what's happening on here- she's a butch lesbian and proud of it and doesn't identify as transgender.

I saw her perform this live last year. It was so raw and powerful, I have never before been aware of such silence in a theatre full of people. Very uncomfortable watching/listening at times but oh so relevant and required at this moment in time. Just astonishing really, no other words.

I've never heard of Hannah before either and this is not usually the kind of thing I'd watch but am so glad I did.

You have no idea of the raw emotive power that is to come at the beginning. She really is amazing.

Someone up-thread mentioned the silence in the hall, it's true, she has the whole audience in her hand. Fab!

Watching now. Some very incisive, well observed and thoughtful stuff. A powerful performance, but there must have been a few people who came out of the theatre thinking “WTF?” It was raw.

I'm still near to tears next day - my dreams were profound - it resonated so much to me as one of those strong rebuilt women (its work in progress).

And she's getting lots of positive press in USA and was on one of those big nightly talk shows- Seth - so wonderful to see she's getting the accolades she deserves

Nanette is Hannah's swansong as a stand-up comedian. As I understand, she will still write and perform lectures etc but no longer wants to laugh about the issues and experiences she has faced.

I had tickets to see her in Edinburgh this year but she has just cancelled the show - www.chortle.co.uk/news/2018/06/18/40260/hannah_gadsby_pulls_out_of_the_edinburgh_fringe which is a shame as I was really looking forward to it but understandable and glad that she is getting her message out to a wider audience.

I'm so glad you all enjoyed it. It has stayed with me too over several days, and I watch a bit of it again with DH last night.
I'm so in awe of funny and articulate people who can deliver a message in such a powerful way. And I'm so glad there are women like her around and that she's hitting the mainstream.
Plus I love how she says 'my people' in her Tasmanian accent. It's hilarious.
