Hi all
Delurking briefly to point you all in the direction of the Netflix release of Hannah Gadsby's Nanette - a stand up recorded at the Sidney Opera House. I just watched and she's brilliant. Fiercely feminist, funny, passionate, angry, emotional, and so so smart. I hadn't heard of her before but enjoyed it so much I had to share. Off to lurk again now.

You can watch the trailer on youtube:

Thank you Op.
That was one of the most powerful things I've watched in so long.

There is nothing stronger than a broken woman who has rebuilt herself

xbeex · 02/07/2018 22:34

If there was ever a song to go alongside Hannah's words, it has to be this..

Martha wainwright, bloody mother fucking asshole

I am tearing up just trying to write down how moved I was by her story.

@xbeex that Martha Wainwright song is one of my favourites. It’s so fucking angry. I often sing it in my head when I see men being dicks!

Thanks for the song xbeex. I'd never heard it before and I love it!

Today I was lucky enough to get tickets to a local tv show (in Melbourne) where Hannah came in to be interviewed. She was great - very natural and funny about her success. You can imagine the huge reception she got from the live audience. It was moving to be there.

Wanderabout · 11/07/2018 11:28

That was amazing thanks for highlighting

vaginafetishist · 11/07/2018 14:15

It was amazing, I watched with my partner and neither of us could say a word. It was shocking. So many observations that all joined together.

I was so so happy to see her at the end with her dogs.

vaginafetishist · 11/07/2018 14:18

The control in the performance was breathtaking. Imagine going to that thinking you were going to have an evening of observational comedy and laughter.

I loved it when she said 'That's my last joke' in reference to 'pull your socks up' and you could be in no doubt she meant it.

Oswin · 11/07/2018 14:21

I watched this days ago and i havent shut up about her.
Everything she said just makes sense. It was so emotional.

SoftBlocks · 11/07/2018 14:25

Very powerful. I hadn’t heard of her and someone recommended me this. I’m quite interested to see some of her older work.

enoughisenough12 · 11/07/2018 15:06

Quantumblue
So she's still performing if you saw her today? That's great - I thought perhaps she was taking a break - and not surprising given just how much doing a show must drain her.

I hope she comes to the UK to perform soon as she's cancelled her Edinburgh date.

vaginafetishist · 11/07/2018 15:09

Considering what she said about jokes in the show, I almost feel that I couldn't watch her comedy. Is that weird?

Quantumblue · 11/07/2018 22:26

enoughisenough no sorry she came in for an interview. She is briefly back in Australia before doing the show in Montreal. The interviewer asked her how she was coping with sudden fame and she said 'lots of naps'.

gendercritter · 15/07/2018 17:34

I just caught this. I found it really hard watching, tbh, but wow, what a brilliant show. I hope it continues to snowball because it is so powerful.

I'm going to be thinking about this for a long while. And I'm so sad what shit lesbians still have to deal with.

vaginafetishist, I know what you mean. Since watching Nanette, I've been youtubing her, and listening to the stories knowing the true endings is tough.

I can see why she wants to step back from comedy, at least for a while. But I think she'll make a brilliant writer or maybe she'll move into a different type of performing.

Onslow · 22/07/2018 14:20

Finally watched it tonight after seeing this thread last week. Feel very emotional right now, but just want to say, if anyone else has put off watching it, don't! It's powerful.

Thanks OP for sharing.

RogerAllamsFangirl · 24/07/2018 21:04

Just watched this. Breathtaking. I'm glad I didn't watch it with my DH, although now I would like him to have watched it. What an incredibly powerful and brave show. Brava.

silentcrow · 24/07/2018 22:05

Yes, I saw it yesterday thanks to this thread, thank you all. It really is quite something.

FWIW, if you don't want to shell out for Netflix they do have a month free trial - I didn't know that, it might be handy for someone.

Newyoiker · 30/08/2018 00:57

Just bumping this ! It's so good!
