Are "statement" necklaces out of fashion?

I've always thought that adding a statement/big necklace is a good way of jazzing up an otherwise plain or casual outfit, but are they dated now?

I nearly bought a few the other day but it suddenly occurred to me they might be seen as a bit middle aged? Nothing wrong with being middle age but I'm 28. I don't want to look old before my time!

I do like them but I swing between liking the way they look and feeling like I look frumpy.

I'm 57 and have stopped wearing them, I noticed that they looked a 'bit loose women' and a bit 'gloria hunniford', made me feel frumpy, i wear bigger earrings now instead

They have been for a long time. They might be coming back. Big earrings are back.

Not sure. never been a fan of big necklaces. Jewellery has been very delicate for years and it's going BOLD for 2020.

I took mine to the charity shop recently, along with my "indoor scarves". Used to love them but they made me feel really frumpy over the last year or so and I stopped wearing them.

Absolutely depends on what they are & how you style them tbh...

I’ve a black oversize resin chain style I wear with a black polo. I do not feel ‘loose women’ in it at all.

Big earrings are ‘pat butcher’ for me though so I’ll need help if they’re ‘in’

No you can look frumpy - if we really have to use that word - at any age. I see young people every day who look like they have no sense of style, although they may simply not be interested in how they dress, which is absolutely fair enough.
I am just poking a little fun at the absurdity of equating 'middle aged' and 'old' with 'dated' while at the same time asking for our opinion on whether something is dated.

I do get the irony of asking the question given the average age of a Mumsnetter but there's usually really good advice on the S&B board.

I'm struggling with my style in general at the moment. I'm too old to dress like a teenager but then sometimes I seem to go the other way and my outfit is too "mature".

For example, I love wrap dresses. I'm hour glass so they suit my shape but I've got one that makes me look like I've borrowed it from my mum. There's just something "off" about it.

I used to love fashion but since hitting my late 20s and having DD I've totally lost my mojo. Shopping just gives me anxiety.

Neck attire is out. No statement scarfs or leopard print snoods. No big chunky necklaces, or those long dangly ones either. Not much more than a thin chain with sentimental value (preferably plain and gold). It's all about BIG earrings at the moment. But it will come back round again I am sure.

I got rid of all mine that I used to wear to work about ten years ago. I wear very delicate necklaces these days.

Yep, I agree. Statement necklaces are my 65 year old mum (and her friends) way of glamming things up.

I keep an eye on what the youngsters at work wear and I don’t see any of them in statement necklaces (or indoor scarves).

Oh but I love scarves. It's a running joke in my family.

I can't do big earrings as my ears were pierced too low when I was a child so anything big pulls my earlobe down and hurts.

Time to rethink my entire wardrobe and take a lot to charity!

I am most definitely middle-aged and I got rid of my indoor scarves and statement necklaces a few years back as I felt they were now frumpy. But if you like them, wear them!

I think most jewellery (except for tiny studs, etc) is dictated by the outfit anyway. Personally I won't be switching to shells because Vogue says so
