Are "statement" necklaces out of fashion?

I've always thought that adding a statement/big necklace is a good way of jazzing up an otherwise plain or casual outfit, but are they dated now?

I nearly bought a few the other day but it suddenly occurred to me they might be seen as a bit middle aged? Nothing wrong with being middle age but I'm 28. I don't want to look old before my time!

I definitely need someone to tell me how to dress. The problem is I don't like a lot of the current fashion trends.

I'm one of the youngest at work and those that are younger dress "fashionably" but if I'm brutally honest I don't think it suits them, even though it's all the latest trends.

What's with the "mum" jeans? They make everyone look bigger than they are and like they've got a flat bum.

And I can't get on board with the clumpy 90s style shoes.

Big earrings in. Big necklaces out. (Apparently !)

Grafittiqueen · 25/01/2020 13:13

I asked in Zara if they had any statement necklaces recently and the girl shook her head at me. Grin

They only had statement earrings as necklaces are out apparently.

@AlexaAmbidextra I'm having a massive crisis of confidence about my life in general and can't seem to make a decision about anything, including my wardrobe, so I thought I'd ask for advice.

@mushroomtree take a look at Styled by Susie Tribe group on facebook - seems to be an older demographic in general than your age, but some good pointers/ideas there.

downlow · 25/01/2020 13:20

Not sure what Zara you were in but they are full of big shell necklaces & those link (?) necklaces.

downlow · 25/01/2020 13:23

@MushroomTree firstly think about what you like & what you feel comfortable in.

memberofseven · 25/01/2020 13:25

I've got big boobs so have never worn them as I look a bit bet lynch. With all these things I think it depends on the rest of your style. If you have a frumpy figure ?like me!) I would avoid. They look great on more waif like figures though.

baileysandamincepie · 25/01/2020 13:28

(or the John Lewis personal shoppers MN relentlessly recommend)
Thank you for saying it.

ditto the suggestion to "just book a spa day" as the solution to anyone with a problem at home

Divebar · 25/01/2020 13:31

I love a big statement necklace but I haven’t worn them for a few years. I think a good alternative is wearing multiple fine necklaces with different charms and gems. I think & Other Stories is a good source on the High Street and Monica Vinader lets you build a bespoke layered necklace. I think they look good with fine stacking rings.

I am ashamed to say l do associate chunky and large plastic necklaces with the menopause Blush maybe not at your age though?

XingMing · 25/01/2020 13:42

Any statement necklaces have been pushed to the back of the drawer for the time being. They don't look current.

But I would have to agree with the PP who's not in love with (most of) what's in the shops, particularly the dresses. Like hand-me-downs from the Laura Ashley milkmaids' jumble sale.

Greenglassteacup · 25/01/2020 13:51

I wear what I like, I don’t follow trends or fashion, I also wear a lot of vintage clothing. Dress to please yourself OP and let others look shite in their cold shoulder tops !!!! If that’s what they want (and other short term on trend disasters which are out there at any given time )

poopiedoop · 25/01/2020 14:01

Jewellery has been very delicate for years and it's going BOLD for 2020.

Correct, the whole delicate layered chains & dainty studs has hung around for years. 2020 is in your face, lots of chunky chains & massive hoops.

* If you’re just 28, you couldn’t look frumpy if your life depended on it. A good rule is to do the opposite of whatever anyone here (or the John Lewis personal shoppers MN relentlessly recommend) suggest is fashionable

Statement of the day, 🤣🤣🤣

Op, you could be a new trendsetter, and go bold....and just hope everyone doesn't think you're a secret loose woman. Maybe a sign saying jewellery is going bold?

Oh and for the op, Iv e seen many a frumpy 28 year old, and trust me they don't have try.

MadamePewter · 25/01/2020 14:11

@MushroomTree if this is any help, I got my ears re pierced higher up as I had this problem too.

MushroomTree · 25/01/2020 14:13

@poopiedoop that definitely isn't a trend I'll be getting on board with. Chunky chains and hoops just make me look like a "chav" for want of a better word.

I wouldn't say I have a frumpy figure but I'm hour glass and can end up looking matronly in the wrong outfit. Big boobs = shelf if I'm not careful!

I don't necessarily want to look fashionable. But I would like to look stylish.

@Bluntness100 I had my age guessed at 35 not that long ago so I obviously don't look particularly youthful!

olivehater · 25/01/2020 14:19

Yep a bit middle aged. Think pru leath on bake off. It’s all about dainty layering jewellery these days, preferably in gold.

Fochit · 25/01/2020 14:19

I never wear a necklace of any description.
You would have to strangle me with my scarf to get it off me though

Lucked · 25/01/2020 14:20

I have never suited big necklaces but I am embracing the big earring trend for nights out.

poopiedoop · 25/01/2020 14:24

It’s all about dainty layering jewellery these days,

But it's not! well it's not outside of MN

MushroomTree · 25/01/2020 14:25

@olivehater you've got it in one! I saw a bake off advert the other day with Pru and I thought "shit, that's me". Dressing like Pru at 28 can't be a good thing.

OP posts:
poopiedoop · 25/01/2020 14:26

Well if you want to be stylish op you stick to what you like & with what suits you with a slight nod to trends.

poopiedoop · 25/01/2020 14:28

I mean I love Pru's use of colour at her age however if you are actually dressing like her at 28 I think you should forgot about accessories & focus on your actual clothes.
