Are "statement" necklaces out of fashion?

MushroomTree · 25/01/2020 10:11

I've always thought that adding a statement/big necklace is a good way of jazzing up an otherwise plain or casual outfit, but are they dated now?

I nearly bought a few the other day but it suddenly occurred to me they might be seen as a bit middle aged? Nothing wrong with being middle age but I'm 28. I don't want to look old before my time!

I like stuff like this

gemwaithnia.co.uk/

Is it frumpy?

Haffiana · 25/01/2020 14:32

Delicate necklaces always look to me as if the wearer is timid and lacks confidence. If we are going to be ageist about it, they suit very young teens and no-one else.

dontgobaconmyheart · 25/01/2020 14:34

OP are you sure you don't think it doesnt suit them because you...don't appreciate fashion and therefore don't get it (the look they are going for). Things don't always need to flatter to look good. I realise that sounds rude but honestly is not intended as such. I think you're right that you are wanting to look stylish but not exactly follow current youthful fashion, which there is nothing wrong with, I think that is most of us.

I'm 32 and do dress young on some days, however do look younger and am quite slight (due to ill health rather than stealth boast) and so I don't feel it looks out of place. Mom Jean's in the right fit are super comfortable, look cool and are quite versatile really.

On days I'm not joyously reliving the 80/90s I tend to dress fairly classic but always keep the cut and accessories current . Daily sort of outfit would be well fitting straight leg jeans, a shirt or jumper tucked in, sleeves rolled up, loafers, trainers or biker boots, gold jewellery, the odd hair clip, long coat and a scarf if it's cold. Wrap dresses make me feel like a teacher/PTA member or similar and I think dressing in a twee way can be quite ageing for certain women too, hence why I avoid prints and pastels (though do wear lots of other colour, mood depending)

I think it's just about taking very small elements of trends (which are often exaggerated in editorials) and wearing them more normally so they aren't a statement but are just an element of an overall current appearance. I dress doe my mood mainly so probably look fairly different on the day/occasion.

According to you big jewellery is the predicted trend for 2020. Clue is in the name predicted. Possible it will make a comeback. Time will tell. But currently any style blogger worth her salt is wearing gold layering jewellery.

poopiedoop · 25/01/2020 14:42

According to you Me? where did I say that? It was all over the catwalks & Zara already has the chain necklaces in. Thats kind of how fashion works & I'm a buyer. We buy based on predictions otherwise shops wouldn't have any stock. Zara is the market leader in terms of getting catwalk trends into stores.

Come on then, who are these super oh trend bloggers you are referring to?

museumum · 25/01/2020 14:44

Don’t laugh at the mention of M&S on a “style” board but I’m finding their Try Tuesday emails really good. They show inspiration photos from slebs and catwalks then link to M&S pieces. I don’t usually buy the M&S item but it’s made me wear my own clothes differently or buy a new different item or two I wouldn’t have been brave enough for (eg culottes).

DameXanaduBramble · 25/01/2020 14:44

Settler, that website is typical of someone who makes their own jewellery. All the glass beads and findings are very frumpy.

hiphiphoorayback · 25/01/2020 14:48

I hope so I bloody hate the fugly buggers. Grin

HeadInTheCumulus · 25/01/2020 14:51

Slavish following of trends will never be stylish, so a generic statement necklace can look “frumpy” or dated. A necklace that you really love, and have considered how it will be incorporated into your outfit, will look interesting! If you love it, wear it.

AlexaAmbidextra · 25/01/2020 15:06

Yep a bit middle aged. Think pru leath on bake off. It’s all about dainty layering jewellery these days, preferably in gold.

If anything is middle-aged it’s gold. Much prefer silver.

sparklefarts · 25/01/2020 15:13

Are long necklaces the same as statement necklaces?

MushroomTree · 25/01/2020 15:13

Thanks for all the advice.

Due to current lack of budget and putting on weight since summer I'm currently wearing whatever I can find in my wardrobe that I can fit into and is vaguely appropriate for the occasion, so yes, I imagine my entire wardrobe is the issue and statement necklaces are the least of my problems.

poopiedoop · 25/01/2020 15:14

I'm pretty sure silver is making its way back as well.

MushroomTree · 25/01/2020 15:21

@poopiedoop I hope so because I don't wear gold at all so I'll never be on trend in that respect.

I'm late 40's I have a couple I still wear. Some malachite and Mexican beads from the 1970's and some turquoise and silver beads which were handmade from a Turkish jewellery designer around ten years ago purchased in Istanbul. I still love them and wear them quite often.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/01/2020 16:14

I'm afraid they just remind me of Prue Leith on GBBO. Her stylist just loves a statement necklace, 😂

playbadlycast · 25/01/2020 16:17

I think they’re mostly naff but there can be exceptions to the rule. Some people pull them off. I’m hoping to be one of the latter (but will proceed either way!) This because I’m nearly over, or at least need a break from, the delicate gold necklace thing.

I now actually want a bit of silver in a statement (or bolder at least) necklace and cannot find one. I’ve only found really cheap - that brings me out in hives (nickel presumably), or very pricey - over a grand. If anyone has any ideas...? Sorry if hijacking.

I think it depends on what you call a statement necklace, and how you dress with it.

I wear a lot of Georg Jensen and the like sort of heavy minimalist jewellery (like this), and in my clothes I like simple, minimalist, almost architectural styles, well cut and in quality fabrics.
I also tend to stick to white, black grey and navy, often with jeans. Black and white in particular are the colours which suit me best especially if worn next to my face.

I don't follow fashion though, and I'm a huge believer in wearing what you love and feel comfortable in.
Life is far too short to follow other peoples' ideas of what you should wear Smile

@EatenByDinosaurs I like that necklace!

I think you're right. I need to try on everything in my wardrobe and if I don't love it, it's going.

RockinHippy · 25/01/2020 17:20

Fashion is for fashion victims, so who cares.

If YOU like this look, wear it & sod anyone who judges. That's their issue not yours. Style has nothing to do with fashion

EatenByDinosaurs · 25/01/2020 17:21

Thanks @MushroomTree it's one of my favourites, not me in the picture though obviously Grin.

What has helped me in the past is trying on a few of my absolute favourite outfits which I feel fantastic in, and then going through my closet trying all my other clothes on. Anything which doesn't make me feel equally fabulous gets put to the side and charity shopped.

I use this approach when buying new clothes too, I go shopping in a favourite and anything which doesn't make me feel at least as great as what I came in gets put back. Its made shopping for clothes much easier Grin

MushroomTree · 26/01/2020 16:33

@EatenByDinosaurs that's the method I'm going to use. I can already think of a few outfits that are definitely staying but there's loads I need to try on that probably won't make the cull!
