Half the time I have no idea what everyone is going on about. BTDT, DH, DD, DP, YABU etc, etc,

Grrrrrrrrr

OP posts:
Hullygully · 25/03/2010 18:42

Sadly not, I think that company is rubbish.

Indaba · 25/03/2010 18:43

And that Lac365 is what is commonly called being "flamed".....lots of people shouting at you with contrary opinion.....(and whilst we're on the subject, please can someone let me know what PESH and BESH stands for....checked out the site but can't find it explained.....).

WidowWadman · 25/03/2010 18:46

YANBU, really. I feel the same IYKWIM

DramaInPyjamas · 25/03/2010 18:53

I don't really use abbreviations that much when posting.
But when I joined Mumsnet I took the time to learn them all..
It doesn't take long to get the hang of and no one is asking you use them, it's not compulsory.

MinnieMalone · 25/03/2010 18:57

It's just shorthand. Chill out.

ThorOdinBahamut · 10/10/2014 08:12

I don't mind people using initialisms as long as they are defined somewhere.

Can MumsNet (MN) create a section where the most used initialisms are explained ?

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 10/10/2014 08:22

Thor there is already a section. Someone linked to it at the top of the thread I believe.

Also, this thread is 4 years old. What on earth did you bump it for?

HappyAmbler · 10/10/2014 08:22

Erm... they already have? See the second reply to the OP

HappyAmbler · 10/10/2014 08:23

Oops, didn't notice this was a zombie...

ThorOdinBahamut · 10/10/2014 10:11

Bonjour PourquoiTuGachesTaVie,

I did a search for "abbreviations" and replied to the first search result (should be the most relevant in my opinion). That explains the bump.

There isn't a link at the top of the thread, or it is hidden somewhere.

I found the list of abbreviations and honestly think it is rubbish. Ok for dd, dh, ds (although husband, daugther and son are much easier to understand). And come on, DS is only one letter shorter than son, are we all that lazy ?

Nanny0gg · 10/10/2014 10:28

And come on, DS is only one letter shorter than son, are we all that lazy?

Yes.

BaffledSomeMore · 10/10/2014 10:38

I don't believe they are abbreviations...

Viviennemary · 10/10/2014 10:41

It took me a while to get used to those but I know quite a lot of them now. And it's much quicker than typing out the whole thing.

dreamerdoer · 10/10/2014 10:57

I have no problem with them, EXCEPT sometimes it irritates me when posters mix and match dc's with dd/ds all in one post.

Like "dc4 fights with ds1, then dd2 hits back, so dc2... "

And we are supposed to realise dc4 is dd2, and ds1 is dc2, because of course we have memorised the birth order and gender of the posters kids.

ReggieJones · 10/10/2014 11:00

Too late in the day, I fear

Vintagejazz · 10/10/2014 11:18

Yanbu as it can get very confusing when there's a large cast - DS1 and DSD and DGPs and DNDN and DN and DF etc etc.

fizzymittens · 10/10/2014 11:29

I agree. All that DH crap is puke inducing nonsense. It makes Mumsnet a bit of a laughing stock even though it is a really good forum on the whole.

Vintagejazz · 10/10/2014 11:32

What does the 'D' stand for anyway? Dear? Darling? Why would I refer to the next door neighbours or my brother in law like that?

DinoSnores · 10/10/2014 11:39

It is fairly common across fora on the internet and is not limited to Mumsnet.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dear_husband

fizzymittens · 10/10/2014 11:41

Half the time people are giving their 'DHs' a good slagging anyway so the 'D' seems a little silly.

And 'DCs' as a plural (rather than DC's) makes no sense - dear childrens? Dear childs?

Fenton · 10/10/2014 11:41

These abbreviations and others are used on other forums too y'know.

NotMNRoyalty · 10/10/2014 11:46

Being as you've taken the trouble to bump a zombie thread, I'll take the time to explain. We are a community, we have a shared language. You are neither expected nor forced to use it.

DH doesn't read as 'dear' or 'darling' for the vast majority I suspect. It is merely shorthand for "man to whom I am married". Feelings towards that man are conveyed through description and/or swearing. The reason it is DH and not H is because of how we scan words. Two letters are infinitely easier for us to interpret than one.

Add your own meaning. Dastardly, despicable, defenestrated, devious. Take your pick. Ask how many read STBXH as stupid bastard ex-husband for example.

Or, you know, charge into a community with established conventions and immediately start ridiculing them. Your choice.

ThorOdinBahamut · 10/10/2014 11:54

Ok, so it is out of lazyness, thanks for the confirmation NannyOgg.

Indeed, there are not abbreviations, neither acronyms. They are initialisms.

All these "abbreviations" do not encourage me to read more on this website. I'm only interested in multi-lingual children and couldn't understand what people were talking about in response to my post.

Maybe I'll get used to most of them but they are still some that I found unnecessary.

Communication clarity suffers due to people lazyness. We are not on twitter, you are allowed more than 140 characters.

ThorOdinBahamut · 10/10/2014 12:00

I agree Showy, this is a community with its own shared language, and if you don't understand it, you're not welcomed.

We won't agree on this. I really dislike abreviations, alphabetisms, initialisms whatever you call them. Let's write in proper english and that would help non native speaker like me to be part of that community.
