about our neighbours' inflatable hot tub

Our neighbours are nice enough people. We chat if we see each other take in parcels for each other etc.
There have been occasional niggles - eg he complained that our drive being re-laid had blown dust on his car and it could have been scratched if he had just washed it with a sponge and bucket. DH apologised and said we should have told him so he could have moved his car.
I was unhappy when their builders put scaffolding outside our bathroom window and I found myself using the loo with a builder on the other side of the glass. They apologised.
Their children had a trampoline in the garden which the son bounced on from 6.30 in the morning until 10 at night (not continuously) in the summer and it was a horrible repetitive noise that drove me mad. We never said anything and it was removed last year as he had outgrown it.
Nothing serious, never fallen out.
However, for the last few days we have been aware of this horrible electrical buzzing and noise which is constant and sometimes much louder and seemed like a motor of some kind. Turns out they have bought a large, inflatable hot-tub which is what is making the noise. They were out somewhere all day yesterday but the buzzing/hum was on all day. Today they have used it this morning and they were having to talk really loudly to hear each other over the noise when the motor bit was on. It is against our side of the garden because it is sunny and sheltered there.
I can't bear it. It is a contunual droning humming sort of noise.
I wsnt to say something. DH thinks I shouldn't but we couldn't sit on the patio in the sun this morning or in the kitchen with the french doors open because of this noise. It is only April. It could go on every day for the whole of this summer and however many summers to come.

I feel for you. How bloody ignorant of them. These people ruin summer for anyone who just wants to peacefully enjoy any good weather.

I would definitely make them aware of the issue. I know nothing about hot tubs so can't advise if there is something they could do differently.

I think the only thing to do in these situations is to tell them politely. It will be a looooooooooong summer if you let it continue.

Sparklingbrook Sun 21-Apr-19 12:37:45

Urgh how annoying, you will have to tell them. It's really anti social.

Eliza9919 Sun 21-Apr-19 12:42:01

Cant hot tubs also be used in winter? Being hot and everything..

AguerosAngel Sun 21-Apr-19 12:46:49

Horrible things hot tubs. I think I’ve seen them described as chlamydia soup on here before!

FlyingElbows Sun 21-Apr-19 12:50:00

Oh good, it's time for the annual "sex pond" threads to start. I'm waiting for mine to heat up. I don't give a fuck about the low hum of the heating / filtering system cause it's not a patch on the people two doors down who have an entire bar in their garden! Enjoy your summer, op, and maybe unclench a bit. Hot tubs aren't catching. Maybe get one and relax a bit? They're great.

Eliza That hadn't occured to me! However, we live in north Northumberland on the coast. It's usually freezing from October to April because of the wind off the North sea- it blows straight across the field at the side of our houses. I don't think they could use it then. You'd need to be tough.

Littleduckeggblue Sun 21-Apr-19 12:51:37

I'm sure a little bit of humming isn't going to ruin your day. Let people enjoy the sunshine!

screamifyouwant Sun 21-Apr-19 12:53:15

So if you tell them what then ?
They aren't going to suddenly switch it off .
I know someone who has one it didn't seam that noisy to me but I don't live next door to it .

LuluJakey1 Sun 21-Apr-19 12:53:35

What do you mean 'sex ponds' - are you suggesting they might have sex in it? This could all be even worse than I had thought. (clutches pearls)

DH says the local cats or crows will puncture it. I am ever hopeful.

BingandFlop2019 Sun 21-Apr-19 12:53:38

@FlyingElbows How rude. "I'm alright Jack so sod the rest" "If anyone complains about noise just tell them to unclench"

Perhaps try being a little more compassionate. Clearly you're not very....

CareBear50 Sun 21-Apr-19 12:54:08

Maybe they've hired one for a week?! Hopefully 😙

LuluJakey1 Sun 21-Apr-19 12:55:17

I wouldn't mind if it was just when they are in it - even though it is much louder then- but it is the constant electrical hum as if it is always turned on low or something.

Nodancingshoes Sun 21-Apr-19 12:55:19

We use our hottub all winter op - it's better when it's cold. I'm sat next to mine now - it's humming but it is not loud at all. How close is it to you?

BingandFlop2019 Sun 21-Apr-19 12:55:56

OP I'd pop a note through the door asking politely if they would mind keeping it switched off when not using it? Or.... Ask if they'd mind not having it on in the morning or around tea time for example? That would be a nice compromise?

Nodancingshoes Sun 21-Apr-19 12:56:26

It has to be on all the time or it wouldn't stay hot BTW

Stefoscope Sun 21-Apr-19 12:57:01

I'd maybe try to give it another few days to see whether you get used to the noise. See whether they think to turn whatever is buzzing off when they're not using it (assuming that's possible). If it's still annoying have a polite word, they seem like reasonable people.

Nanny0gg Sun 21-Apr-19 12:57:19

A 'little bit of humming' at the right pitch can send you completely round the twist.

And this seems to be much more than that.

BingandFlop2019 Sun 21-Apr-19 12:57:29

Personally I'm a little confused as to why anyone would want to sit in hot or warm water in this heat?! confused

Nanny0gg Sun 21-Apr-19 12:58:16

If they're leaving it on all day and going out, they're going to have interesting electricity bills later on.

TheCatDidSay Sun 21-Apr-19 12:58:30

Our neighbours but theirs up 2 months ago. Ours isn’t up yet others have been on though-out winter. It’s not exactly loud unless you have bubbles on. It’s a very quite hummmm a fan or radio on low would cover it. The issues start of the filter gets blocked then it beeps.
Cats and crows won’t pop it, it has a thick outer skin then the inflated bit in side that which is also relatively thick.

Sosayi Sun 21-Apr-19 12:58:37

If it’s a plastic fake one one they are much louder than a real one
A real one hardly makes any noise at all

Lean over the wall with a pair of garden shears and pop it 😂😂.

TheCatDidSay Sun 21-Apr-19 13:00:52

You have to leave it on or the water will go bad and it won’t be hot.

It might add £2 a day maximum into the electric depends on bubble usage and how well it holds it heat.

ChariotsofFish Sun 21-Apr-19 13:01:53

I think if the noise is that disturbing when it’s not in use it must be leaning against something that it’s causing to vibrate. So it might be worth talking to them to see if it could be moved slightly. Surely that noise will be equally annoying for them anyway?
