about our neighbours' inflatable hot tub

Our neighbours are nice enough people. We chat if we see each other take in parcels for each other etc.
There have been occasional niggles - eg he complained that our drive being re-laid had blown dust on his car and it could have been scratched if he had just washed it with a sponge and bucket. DH apologised and said we should have told him so he could have moved his car.
I was unhappy when their builders put scaffolding outside our bathroom window and I found myself using the loo with a builder on the other side of the glass. They apologised.
Their children had a trampoline in the garden which the son bounced on from 6.30 in the morning until 10 at night (not continuously) in the summer and it was a horrible repetitive noise that drove me mad. We never said anything and it was removed last year as he had outgrown it.
Nothing serious, never fallen out.
However, for the last few days we have been aware of this horrible electrical buzzing and noise which is constant and sometimes much louder and seemed like a motor of some kind. Turns out they have bought a large, inflatable hot-tub which is what is making the noise. They were out somewhere all day yesterday but the buzzing/hum was on all day. Today they have used it this morning and they were having to talk really loudly to hear each other over the noise when the motor bit was on. It is against our side of the garden because it is sunny and sheltered there.
I can't bear it. It is a contunual droning humming sort of noise.
I wsnt to say something. DH thinks I shouldn't but we couldn't sit on the patio in the sun this morning or in the kitchen with the french doors open because of this noise. It is only April. It could go on every day for the whole of this summer and however many summers to come.

Don't worry OP. You'll get your own back when the trampoline arrives. 😉

My gran bought a few bags of manure for her garden and leant it against the fence for a few weeks....

PrincessTiggerlily · 22/04/2019 12:07

Did they always sit outside chatting and drinking on a summers evening or was it occasionally like most people - it will get pretty boring over time so I would wait and see if it wears off.

If it's an inflatable one, the noise is the air pump. Its much noisier than a proper hot tub- think of the noise you get from a bouncy castle.

The good news is that the novelty will soon wear off and they are supposed to be a challenge to keep clean and maintained.

They don't sound like that at all! We have one on a flat roof and all you can hear is a gentle hum when the heater or filtration pump is on. I think the OP's neighbours must have their motor unit against a fence which is vibrating. Also if they get in it together with the bubbles going and are shouting over the noise that must be terribly irritating.

Whathewhatnow · 23/04/2020 20:34

Weve just got one. Honestly isn't that noisy and I.am fairly sensitive to noise. When the kids are in it it is loud because they shout. Aside from that...nope.maybe some are worse than others??

drone with scissors (grin)

Of all the problems that neighbours can cause to each other (deliberately or thoughtlessly), a "Noise Nuisance" is the easiest to deal with. Your Local Authority will be very familiar with this.
If a polite discussion/letter does not work, then report it to the Council. They will eventually investigate it, and if convinced it is serious enough, deal with it, at no cost to you.

Whathewhatnow · 23/04/2020 22:46

At no cost to you, unless you ever want to sell your house...

And a hot tub would never qualify as a noise nuisance unless there was something unusual about it. Like, it being powered by jet engines ....

Try a water feature in your own garden maybe? Something gentle to clock out the hum

Cherrysoup · 24/04/2020 00:17

Yes, it needs to be on constantly to keep the temperature up. Ours is, but it’s a proper one and silent. Sex pond? Who the fuck has sex in a hot tub? You’d have to change the water which, tbh, is a fucking HUGE job involving a submersible pump, lifting the sewer lid etc. No, no, no!

Go out there and shout at each other, lots of ‘Can”t hear you, sorry, what?’ Hopefully they’ll get bored of it. Pray for rain!

A year on, well what was the outcome ?
Me personally would just get one myself and put it as close as possible to theirs..

mixolydian · 20/05/2020 19:54

I'm interested to know what the outcome was too Smile

Jmwg339 · 13/05/2021 06:24

I have the same problem.I solved it with loud music, loud motorcycles and three hens and a cockerel.the noise soon stoped.

daddydaynet · 23/05/2023 14:03

You have to leave the hot tub running or... it will not be hot!

Get over yourself and stop moaning, as someone else already said above, maybe you should get one and relax a bit lol.
