about our neighbours' inflatable hot tub

Our neighbours are nice enough people. We chat if we see each other take in parcels for each other etc.
There have been occasional niggles - eg he complained that our drive being re-laid had blown dust on his car and it could have been scratched if he had just washed it with a sponge and bucket. DH apologised and said we should have told him so he could have moved his car.
I was unhappy when their builders put scaffolding outside our bathroom window and I found myself using the loo with a builder on the other side of the glass. They apologised.
Their children had a trampoline in the garden which the son bounced on from 6.30 in the morning until 10 at night (not continuously) in the summer and it was a horrible repetitive noise that drove me mad. We never said anything and it was removed last year as he had outgrown it.
Nothing serious, never fallen out.
However, for the last few days we have been aware of this horrible electrical buzzing and noise which is constant and sometimes much louder and seemed like a motor of some kind. Turns out they have bought a large, inflatable hot-tub which is what is making the noise. They were out somewhere all day yesterday but the buzzing/hum was on all day. Today they have used it this morning and they were having to talk really loudly to hear each other over the noise when the motor bit was on. It is against our side of the garden because it is sunny and sheltered there.
I can't bear it. It is a contunual droning humming sort of noise.
I wsnt to say something. DH thinks I shouldn't but we couldn't sit on the patio in the sun this morning or in the kitchen with the french doors open because of this noise. It is only April. It could go on every day for the whole of this summer and however many summers to come.

TheCatDidSay I know those examples are (we have a swimming pool which is checked twice daily). However you're assuming that people actually do the checks on these garden hot tubs - I don't think everyone would appreciate that this needs to be done.

bewaretheidesofmarch · 21/04/2019 14:02

or how dangerous it can be if you don't do the necessary checks.

goldenpacking · 21/04/2019 14:03

What do you mean 'sex ponds' - are you suggesting they might have sex in it? DH says the local cats or crows will puncture it. I am ever hopeful

Yes most likely, if the crow and cat sex is wild enough Grin

Sharp knife through the fence?

I hope that's a joke. If anyone did that to my property I would be phoning the Police.

I was thinking they would be more attractive than they are. It's like a grown ups paddling pool. Grin

Utterly grim.

I think you will have to speak to them nicely and if that doesn't work, yeah, stab it.

CorlysVelaryon · 21/04/2019 14:38

"I hope that's a joke. If anyone did that to my property I would be phoning the Police."

Yes you'd have to make it look like a fox or a cat or something had done it.

I don't care what people enjoy in their own gardens, just be kind and considerate and thoughtful about your neighbours. Minimise any avoidable noise if you can, position things like hot tubs and trampolines sensitively.

getfrocked · 21/04/2019 14:45

Hmm Hope that wouldn't apply to children or pets too?!

There must be more civilised avenues to pursue (if speaking to them nicely does not have the desired effect) before one gets all stabby.

cuppycakey · 21/04/2019 14:46

getfrocked No that wouldn't apply to pets!! Shock

NoSauce · 21/04/2019 14:48

Unfortunately that’s the downside of living so close to other people.

getfrocked · 21/04/2019 14:51

No that wouldn't apply to pets!!

Apologies cuppycakey Smile

Japonicaflower2 · 21/04/2019 14:58

Grim. Who on earth thinks sitting in a tub of human soup is enjoyable? Presumably you wouldn't climb into your bath with your friends?
People along the road had one craned over their roof into their back garden, only to discover fairly quickly that the local seagulls actually thought it was for them. The birds eventually ripped through the cover and sides. RIP hot tub 😟

cuppycakey · 21/04/2019 14:58

Other people's children, maybe, but never pets Grin

Erksum · 21/04/2019 15:01

Yanbu. I’d hate the humming noise. I don’t mind kids playing or people talking and laughing but music or humming hot tubs are really irritating.

I’d speak to them. Maybe ask them to come and hear it from your garden. They might be able to minimise the noise or move it.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 21/04/2019 15:04

Every so often I find myself really hoping we don’t have a heatwave again this year because I don’t want to listen to bbqs etc etc GrinBlush

Shadowboy · 21/04/2019 15:07

Our next door neighbours have one and like you, they are good neighbours in the main. But the sex pond hum is so so loud. It’s almost like a little sub station buzzing next to our patio. It’s totally put us off sitting on our patio- just so you know OP our neighbours use theirs in the depths of winter- which wasn’t a problem as we didn’t really use the garden. But now it’s very uncomfortable as the pitch and volume is just about the same volume as one of those bouncy castle air blowers, plus the electric noise has a whine to it. We didn’t complain (yet) as in other respects they are decent neighbours. But I do totally appreciate the irritation!

JenniferJareau · 21/04/2019 15:21

Yes, it was a joke. Assumed the grin made that obvious but clearly not!

FenellaVelour · 21/04/2019 15:23

I’d actually been thinking about getting a hot tub when we remodel our garden, but this thread has put me off. We do live in a built up area and have neighbours both sides and behind. Given I even feel guilty about lighting my chiminea when the evening cools down, I will wait until I can afford a proper hot tub or just not bother!

LuluJakey1 · 21/04/2019 15:25

Yes Shadow that is it exactly. Small electric substation constant buzzing and whining humming.

I will give it a few days to see if we can adapt but will have to speak to them. It is a small round inflated thing with an egg shaped unit behind it which is what is buzzing. It is up against our fence outside our kitchen. It's where we sit to eat in the summer or just sit in the sun with a coffee. I think even if they moved it to the other side or to the bottom of the garden it would be so much better.

Yogagirl123 · 21/04/2019 15:31

Speak to your neighbour, perhaps the humming noise could be muffled in some way, moved away from the fence. Or buy your hot tub and place it against fence 🤣

Rosie2531 · 21/04/2019 15:31

You can't 'switch it off when not using it' as it takes a good 24hrs or so to fully heat up. They'll most likely keep it on for the foreseeable. Maybe get an outdoor speaker if you can't tolerate the noise? That way you can listen to your own music.

They're not exactly being anti-social and wouldn't come under any anti-social laws.

CokeAndCrispsAndDip · 21/04/2019 15:36

I feel for you. My neighbour has one at the end of their garden and was switched on last Spring and never turned off. It drives me nuts, I now just whack the radio up when in the garden. They don't seem to mind it but I am irritated by certain pitches of noise and this is definitely one of them!

Grumpelstilskin · 21/04/2019 15:42

Ponders about blowing darts and accidentally puncturing it... Grin

strawberrisc · 21/04/2019 15:44

The kid behind mine keeps screaming “Alexa, play Baby Shark”. Alexa obliges. Through speakers.
