All you work from home moms, can you help me?

I am increasingly struggling to pay childcare fees and balancing work and homelife. Is there any job I could do from home. I am an intelligent girl and could turn my hand to anything (quote from partner, patronising or what!)Seriously though it would be a great help if I could find something to do from home. Nothing major, just pocket money really. I have a PC and the internet if that helps???Ideas greatly welcome.............

I have worked for a major bank for the past 12 years. I have been a trainer/learning support co ordinator there running and writing worksops and delivering them to staff. For the past 5 years I have worked in the fraud department, recovering funds from other banks and refunding customers. I also train other members of staff on the detection of fraud. These roles mean that I am a good communicator, very high spirited and great at lifting morale. I can follow legislation and can work eiter alone or in a team along with many other qualities. Any other questions or advice please I am desperate for a change of scenery. I have often thought about starting my own business training in other organisations, especially fraud given the current state of affairs.

I do transcription work from home - however you've got to be a very, very fast and accurate (although some of my posts on here beg to differ) typist. Either Google transcription services to find companies, a lot of companies will ask you to do a typing test; or I found my job on the Reed website, typed home based and searched under clerical admin. Took a couple of months but eventually found this job and have been doing it for two years now.

Can you do your job from home? At least in part?

If this is a possibility, then I would explore that option first, then you can get a feel for the logistics of working from home.

Or can you work different hours? Negotiate a payrise?

I cannot emphasise enough that you cannot work and look after your child at home, so this should be an option for you to work flexibly (for example, when you have available childcare or your partner is around, or after bedtime).

Working from home is not an easy option, but it can give you a degree of flexibility.

Christiana - The legal side of the fraud training worries me though. There must be a thousand loop holes I must go through. Especially to train in Africa. I would feel like im educating people on how to do it rather than prevent it. In Nigeria they have fraud schools where you can learn ho to commit fraud - i kid you not!

I work as an editor from home for whcih you don't necessarily need formal training, if you can compensate with experience eg, you could write/edit for a compnay if you have experience of drafting business literature and a good grasp of the English language etc. I work for agencies and private clients and it is very very flexible. However, you still need childcare even if you work from home - it's jsut not posible to work while the kids are in the house, though it fits around school hours well. Google 'editorial services' if you are interested though it doesn't seem to fit too well with your past experience. Best of luck!

Just looked at workingmums.com. It has loads on there.The ones that i an keen on typicall involve paying for a franchise and we just dont have that kind of money. I would be happy data inputting or editing for 15 hours a week. Gonna google some suggestions i got on here

I have seen other posts on MN where people earn money by answering questions online - can be anything, your specialist subject, and you get paid per question and do the hours you want

walkthedinosaur - just out of interest do you use special transcription equipment? I do medical and pharmaceutical research and sometimes I do transcribe recorded interviews but because it's not the main part of my job I just use a tape recorder - or, more commonly now, they send recordings digitally that I play on windows media player or itunes.

Have been looking to do just basic transcription to fill in slow periods that I sometimes get (like now!) - is it pretty straightforward? Are you typing letters or longer documents?

I think that the vast majority of people who work for editorial services agencies work from home but they probably don't spell it out on the websites. Find a few agencies that you like the look at and send your CV in - i've chosen agencies in the past based on how professional their websites are etc, eg, Scribendi is a good one. They don't normally tell you rates of pay/working conditions etc until you've passed an editing test. Also check out the Society of freelance editors and proofreaders, they are very good and professional, and their training courses are excellent. They offer loads of help and guidance to editors starting out, and we are all working from home.

oh and tracey yes it's a con. Don't give any money upfront, a legit business wouldn't ask for this (unless of course you are buying a franchise but that's a different matter)
