Question relating to need for a sick note

NotABeliever · 25/03/2026 17:51

Hi there
do I need to provide a fit note in this scenario?
First day of sickness 27/3 (Friday)
Last day of sickness 2/4 (Thursday)
Friday 3rd is Bank Holiday
Monday 5th is Bank Holiday
Annual leave already booked from 6/4 to 22/4
When I return on 23/4, do I need to hand in a sick note and if so from when?

thanks

Are you planning your sickness in advance?!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 25/03/2026 17:57

What a weird post! That’s some skill you’ve got, knowing exactly when you’re going to fall ill and for how long 🤨

parkezvous · 25/03/2026 17:58

Self cert first 7 days then sick not for dates after that

pomeglamate · 25/03/2026 17:59

OP might be having an operation or something. You can self certify for seven calendar days so should be okay I believe.

Or more likely looking to start her holiday earlier 🤷‍♀️

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 25/03/2026 18:00

You self-certify for the first 5 days' sickness. You're going to say you're ill Monday to Thursday, so you wouldn't need a fit note.

You know how it will look to your employer though, so expect a thorough return to work meeting after your holiday.

You realise this is fraud and misconduct?

dadtoateen · 25/03/2026 18:21

Seeing Into the future when you will be ill. That’s impressive.

Gliblet · 25/03/2026 18:24

You'll need to have a look at your sickness policy and see if it says 7 working days, 7 business days, or 7 calendar days.

Don’t be daft.

NotABeliever · 25/03/2026 18:26

Fraud?? I’m due to have a biopsy after months of waiting and been advised that I’m likely to be sore for a week afterwards.
I can’t believe some people!

I had to book sick leave in advance when I was due to have a procedure in hospital.

Ignore them, some people are hard of thinking.

If that’s the case just inform work and show them the appointment confirmation, they will sort the rest out 👍

NotABeliever · 25/03/2026 18:27

And I haven’t had a day off sick since 2019
I don’t even know why I’m justifying myself
thanks for making me feel worse!

If it's for a biopsy OP, the hospital should provide you with cover. DH has just had a minor cardiac procedure under GA and the DR asked if he needed a sick note (sadly we run our own business so it's of no use).

Most of us understood what you meant. Don’t focus on the few who just jumped to get a dig in without knowing what is happening.

It’s probably how you worded it. It did look like you were pulling a sicky…

hope all goes well with the procedure

Major drip feed

plims · 25/03/2026 18:32

Not a drip feed. Further details were not needed to answer the OP’s question.

No, it was probably how you read it.

You weren’t the only one.

RaininSummer · 25/03/2026 18:35

Interesting question. I would just ask the employer but I would interested in the answer. I doubt you need a fit note once feeling better but I would clarythat as it runs into holiday.

Spirallingdownwards · 25/03/2026 18:36

Assuming your employer is aware that you are having the biopsy ask them if they require a sick note or whether you can self certify. Many understanding employers won't require either.
