Question relating to need for a sick note

Hi there
do I need to provide a fit note in this scenario?
First day of sickness 27/3 (Friday)
Last day of sickness 2/4 (Thursday)
Friday 3rd is Bank Holiday
Monday 5th is Bank Holiday
Annual leave already booked from 6/4 to 22/4
When I return on 23/4, do I need to hand in a sick note and if so from when?

thanks

You would normally only self-certify the 27/3–2/4 absence and do not need a sick note.

If you’re planning to keep the annual leave as annual leave then you could just self certify for the first week of sickness. However, if you were thinking you may still be unwell & wanting to continue as sick as opposed to being on annual leave (which you’d be perfectly entitled to do if not well enough to work for whatever reason) then you’d need a Med3 certificate for anything beyond the initial 7 days.

Assuming your employer is aware that you are having the biopsy ask them if they require a sick note or whether you can self certify. Many understanding employers won't require either.

Employer can’t demand a fit note within the first 7 days of absence (unless there are public health/infection control concerns).

For most employers you cannot take leave if youre off sick.

You would either:
1)return to work on Thursday 2nd (therefore self certify for Friday- Wednesday) and then take leave as planned
2)self certify for Friday - Thursday and then get a sick note to cover time you need until you return to work. The leave would be cancelled as a result.
3) Get a sick note to cover the full period given this is preplanned

Best to check your HR policy to be sure.

Fraud?? I’m due to have a biopsy after months of waiting and been advised that I’m likely to be sore for a week afterwards.
I can’t believe some people!

Get a fit note then. Not strictly necessary, but does no harm to have the sick leave certified by a doctor.
