Any Company Directors been asked to verify identity for Companies House via Gov.Uk one login

If so how has it worked for you . I’m heartily sick of it having spent all day trying to do it . The first time I got everything done and it crashed before the final verification. Then it wouldn’t link to Companies House . Lastly now it’s said it can’t verify my identity despite accepting it twice earlier . So fed up of Government roll outs when the process is not ready to be released .

Watching with interest. I don’t have to do this but I work for a charity and we need to get all our trustees to do this, including one who is not a UK resident. It’ll be like herding cats!

I've done it and it was quick and easy. Two of my clients have so far done it, for the first it was quick and easy, but for the second, it's been a nightmare and still not verified after several attempts over a couple of weeks despite all their ducks in a row, i.e. valid passport and photo driving licence, P60 and other formal documents in front of them, etc., with all data matching up.

Typical public sector IT cock up really.

I'm on a couple of accountancy/tax fora and everyone is saying the same.

Realistically, they're going to have to roll back the date of it being obligatory. No way will all directors be verified by the planned date of it being required!

Have been procrastinating about it but must do it as I'm sure the problems will only get worse the nearer to the deadline it gets!

When I started the first time all went smoothly until the very end of the process and then it crashed and it’s been a nightmare ever since .

I didn’t have any problems. I used my passport I think.

It sounds like a system if it goes fluently after one attempt all is well but if there’s a problem through the process it’s a problem thereafter .

Mine was ok, dh had trouble with it but managed it eventually.

both used driving licences instead of the passport option

Xiaoxiong · 06/10/2025 19:30

I did it the other day and it was smooth and easy, I was impressed - sorry to hear my experience was atypical!

I did it with a relatively new passport.

OllyBJolly · 06/10/2025 20:01

I had no problem with it.

I do wonder if all of this ID checking and anti money laundering stuff really does stop any crime....

EerieDecorations · 06/10/2025 20:05

Mine took about 10 mins and was straightforward, I used my driving licence and already had government login for something else so didn't need to do that part.

Northquit · 06/10/2025 20:27

Yes.

It's a pain in the arse. Difficult to get the light right to get the images of driving licence and self
Took husband about five goes. Me about 3.

Desktop and phone were used.

I think I still have to change my gov account back to my personal email too. I have mums poa registered on my account which is why I had one.

Zempy · 06/10/2025 20:29

I did it in about five minutes. I think maybe give up for now if system is glitching, and try again tomorrow?

Comefromaway · 06/10/2025 20:33

My parents have given up for the moment. It’s something to do with their emails not linking to gov.uk website.

TigerDroveAgain · 06/10/2025 20:40

Took me 15 minutes

BasilParsley · 06/10/2025 20:50

I did it a few months ago when my annual accounts were due. It took about 15 minutes over all. I used my biometric passport. First time I tried the photo thing it was too bright because I was standing in the sunshine. Second time, it was fine.

I'm guessing it's probably crashing because too many people are suddenly trying to sort it out now before the deadline putting a strain on the system..

DaisyDukesAuntie · 06/10/2025 21:01

I did this a few weeks ago, started on my laptop, transferred to my phone to do the scan of my passport and was surprised how easy it was. Took about 15 minutes

Comefromaway · 06/10/2025 21:05

My parents tried a few weeks ago. But somehow there are two different gov.uk accounts for the company, one for VAT & one for CIS & PAYE. And one of them couldn’t get their email address to link.

RockaLock · 06/10/2025 21:08

I’m a CoSec for a charity and verified my identify without any problem at all (used my passport).

I am absolutely dreading having to ask all our trustees to verify their identity though. I don’t think for a moment it will be plain sailing for all of them, let alone trying to get them to actually do it in the first place!

So much this! Mine still haven’t all signed up to use their trustee email. Despite me sending step by step instructions and offers of access to our IT support people. One moans they can’t use it, but is never available to speak to the IT support people. It’s been 9 months now.

RockaLock · 06/10/2025 21:22

@ButterPiesAreGreat 🤣 and sympathies… good luck(!)

fiorentina · 06/10/2025 21:24

It was quick and easy for DH and I. He did his last week, I’d done it a month before. Hope
you get sorted.

tennissquare · 06/10/2025 21:26

There are 7 million company directors in the U.K. - yes a large number will be a director of more than 1 company and some will be fraudulent but it’s still a lot of people to get on the system!
Any Trustee of a single or multi academy trust in education is a company director too.

EssaDiTractor96 · 06/10/2025 21:31

I was dreading this, as all the other Board members were having huge issues. Sat down to do it a few weekends ago and took about 15 mins, super simple. I thought maybe they had sorted the process out by now but sounds like I was just lucky.

reversegear · 06/10/2025 21:34

It’s was an utter faff, passport id then back to companies house, the verify that, then back to something else, I’m trying to bloody work!! It stopped working twice. So I waited a day and it worked fine.

And all trustees of charities that are also registered as companies, which is a lot. And those often change regularly! In ours, the 3 longest serving must step down each year tho they can stand for re-election.
