some of my colleagues are so negative

aGirlLikeJesamine · 10/07/2025 06:47

they love to make a drama
we have new management
we have a team meeting coming up
there is a particular person who creates tension by saying things like, they are going through our job descriptions
so what?
i can't stand it.
how do you cope with these types of colleagues?

You sound rather “negative” about your colleagues

Justwaits · 10/07/2025 06:48

reasonable

aGirlLikeJesamine · 10/07/2025 06:49

totally unreasonable
i have worked with this colleague for many years and she is well known for saying this.
i mean so what, i work to my job description.

WhatMe123 · 10/07/2025 06:50

You have to learn to let it go over your head not get sucked in by it as they're unlikely to change and it's easy to dragged in isn't it

aGirlLikeJesamine · 10/07/2025 06:51

thank you @WhatMe123

let them gossip among themselves i guess,

The key is understanding other people are dealing with the same pressures as you - money, stress, work, home, family, health.

They're worried about their jobs possibly changing or being lost - can you not empathise with this?

Well shouldn’t be a problem for you then

aGirlLikeJesamine · 10/07/2025 06:53

unlikely our jobs will be lost though, in the nhs,
and i dont feel it is the right atmosphere to be working in, simply because of new management and a meeting!

indeed, but it is the enjoyment of creativity negativity, she revels in it, people get upset

@aGirlLikeJesamine I've worked in a unit in the NHS where the staff were not only negative but maudlin - ie 'do you remember when such and such died?' but like continuosly banging on about bad things that had happened years before.

It can really drag you down. I would just switch off and not join in the conversation or try to rationalise with them. Some people seem to enjoy misery!

Or maybe enjoy winding others up for no particular reason @Justwaits

So you’re not alone.
others too
it’s been going on for years
and never been addressed by anyone senior?
is she your senior?

The example the op gives is that she’s going to look at people’s job descriptions

I don’t find that negative, I’d just think “if you have the time for that, knock yourself out 😆!”

What do the others do? She’s going on about job descriptions but others too are negative… about what?

no not my senior

i guess enjoys winding people up, she wont change, i try very hard not to react, in the past i have had much stress from this

OP posts:
aGirlLikeJesamine · 10/07/2025 07:17

a more senior person would not behave like this

OP posts:
Justwaits · 10/07/2025 07:18

I’m confused

so it’s not just her, it’s your other colleagues too. How are they negative?

but then you mention it being down to “new management”

and if it’s caused you a lot of stress, talk to your line manager

ThomasShelbysfagend · 10/07/2025 07:21

Had a colleague like this op, really dragged people down.
They went off sick then left and it was like the thunder & lightning had blown over and the sun came out for us all.

I understand your frustrations.

But op says it’s not just her
it is multiple colleagues
plus new management

no i am sure i pin pointed out particular person, that is the crux

i will ride it out, la la la in my head!

I agree with you In OP.

I have worked with colleagues who complain for no reason.

It is draining.

aGirlLikeJesamine · 10/07/2025 07:31

i have to work doubly hard to see joy in my work sigh
i am not there for 2 days so that is a positive!

You meet a lot of negative people in the workplace.
Best thing you can do is to build up your personal ability to ignore and deflect their comments. You can't control their behaviour but you can adjust yours so that it doesn't bother you. It's a life skill. Try it. Very useful.

To be fair you did say “some of my colleagues”

and you’ll “leave them gossiping amongst themselves”

and “, simply because of new management and a meeting!”

so I got the impression it was more than one person saying she was going to look at job descriptions

Haha I knew you were going to say this was NHS. It's where all the doom dwellers live.
