I am a remote worker however have been asked to attend the office one day a week, they are moving offices shortly, so will now take longer, so just wondered, what others distance to work is.

I am now retired, but before that my daily commute was a minimum of 3 hours (more if the trains were delayed as they often were).

I used to work one day a week at home.

ohtowinthelottery · 23/03/2025 12:19

DH did a 45 min drive each way, 5 days a week, for 20 years until he recently retired.
DS mostly WFH now as his employer shut their office and moved to smaller premises. Although the new office is in the same town, he now has to go through the centre rather than around the by-pass so his journey time is probably nearer 45mins rather than the 30 he previously had. He only goes in a couple of times a month though.

Five minute walk. Self employed business owner and I specifically chose the location. As a PP has said this comes at a cost for both housing and work space rent, but completely worth it for me

Baggyprincess · 23/03/2025 12:29

10 minutes of country lanes and then 10 minutes of dual carriageway through the countryside. No opportunity to WFH.

I used to commute, 5 minutes walk to the station, 40 minutes on the train, 12 minutes on the tube and 5 minutes walk at the other end. Always longer on the way home as more difficult to time it for the trains.

I appreciate my rural drive these days!

UnisexChipshop · 23/03/2025 12:30

Usually 20-25 mins. However that's in the motorway so occasionally it all grinds to a halt disastrously.

One day a week I work at different locations which can be up to a 90min drive, but those days I don't start before 9.45 and get my mileage paid so it's not as bad as it seems.

Teencentral · 23/03/2025 12:35

Average of 6 times a month, an hour to hour and a half drive and walk, roughly once monthly 25 min drive, the rest of the time either a 15 min walk or wfh depending on my mood, some days will start wfh then walk to local office if my mood takes me. I like the mix and don't even mind the longer commutes ( but would if daily)

MadridMadridMadrid · 23/03/2025 13:19

Typically takes me 35-40 minutes each way.

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 23/03/2025 13:26

Mine is 110 miles and takes 2.5 hours. I get an allowance to stay over so I don't go there and back in the same day.

EggandStress · 23/03/2025 13:34

10 minutes drive (no public transport available).
Before this job it was about 1 hr 45 mins each way (car-train-tube) so I am relishing the change.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 23/03/2025 13:41

I have to go into the office on average once a fortnight. It's 90 miles away and not possible via public transport so I drive. It usually takes me 2 hours in the morning and about 100 minutes in the evening.

Next week I have to be in the office on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday which is very rare. I'm staying with a series of friends rather than do the drive 3 times. I don't have to be there on Tuesday but I'll work there anyway.

cupofgingerbreadtea · 23/03/2025 15:07

About 2 hours each way, but bus times mean I also have to kill 30 minutes in the station in the morning. This is all only once a week but it’s still a total pain. Happily I’m about to start a fully remote job instead.

booksandbakinglover · 23/03/2025 15:07

10 minute drive each way

SoftPillow · 23/03/2025 15:10

My commute varies from 20mins to 40 mins depending on traffic and what else I’m doing on the way. My DH is circa 1.5hrs each way.

How long Will your new commute be?

anicecuppateaa · 23/03/2025 15:10

1hr 15- 1.30 if I don’t get the timing right (usually on the way home). 15 min walk, 30 min train, 30 min walk.

coxesorangepippin · 23/03/2025 15:11

I go into the office twice a month

It takes me an hour there, an hour back

lyricalwindmills · 23/03/2025 15:12

1 hour 45 minutes each way. I only have to do it twice a week though.

NoTouch · 23/03/2025 15:18

When in office it is a 30min drive (I do an early start/finish to miss peak traffic), then a 10min walk.

goodthinking99 · 23/03/2025 15:37

I’m in the office about 3 days out of a 5 day week, 20 minute drive, or 40 mins bus and walk. I’ll usually take the bus once or twice a week depending on if I need to visit any other sites, or have off site meetings. I like the mix of office days/WFH days.

devildeepbluesea · 23/03/2025 15:40

I wfh mostly but do have to visit sites. I’m new and the furthest I’ve been so far is about 1hr 15mins, but the outer reaches of my patch is a good 2hrs 30mins. But of course, as my contract is a home based one I can travel on work time and claim expenses so I’m absolutely fine with that 🙂

Sinkintotheswamp · 23/03/2025 15:44

30 min walk each way. It's the only thing that keeps me sane and fit.

I changed from a 30 min drive when my children were tiny as I didn't feel safe driving tired. I'm a lone parent so never had a break.

AlicePottery · 23/03/2025 15:46

15 mins drive or 20 mins by bike (or bus).
I commuted 2hrs each way to uni every day for 3 years, swore I'd never commute to work.

JulesJules · 23/03/2025 15:48

25mins if I get a bus straight away. 5mins walk, 10mins bus and then 10mins walk. It's about 2.5 miles

Hekett · 23/03/2025 15:51

45-60 mins when I did it daily.

Now I’m home based but do client visits, which can be 30 mins or 5 hours each way!

Twillywoowooo · 23/03/2025 15:53

10min walk to tube, 30ish min journey on train. No changes needed. 2min walk to office. Couldn’t be any better unless I had a little pied a terre opposite the office! I’ve had much worse commutes in the past where it’s taken well over one hour to drive 7 miles. Impossible to drive anywhere fast in London.

Edited to note I only have to attend office 2 days a week.

OddBoots · 23/03/2025 15:54

intrepidpanda · 23/03/2025 10:27

50min each way. In daily
