Would this be bereavement leave.

My grandad passed away unexpectedly last week. I we were close and I cared for him for last few years. I didn't have any time off work. Funeral is next week and I informed my manager of date and they have put it down as annual leave? I thought it was me compassionate/bereavement. NHS with over 20 years service. I work part time.

You need to check the leave policy. Sometimes, bereavement leave is only for direct descendants and doesn't extend the GPs.

Do you have a right to bereavement leave in your contract & is it paid? (& does it cover a grandparent)? If so then you need to request in whatever way your employer specifies?

if not then you could request unpaid leave instead

As others have said, check your policy. Ours allows up to 5 days for immediate family and one day for a grandparent.

I don’t work in the NHS but for my FIL’s funeral I was given compassionate leave without even asking. That was in a large company who frequently treated staff like shit.

We get five days for immediate family including grandparents and one day for other family members. But managers can change at their discretion. When my mum died I ended up taking two weeks and my lovely boss put it through as paid leave, no questions asked.

My job had grandparents funeral down as a day of bereavement leave, I put in annual leave for the travelling either side to attend funeral. I wprk in heritage charity sector.

@MyOpalViewer It's called compassionate leave and the one day in our policy is actually specifically for attending a funeral, as you can get discretionary extra time if you need to travel a long way.

I'm in exactly the same boat and NHS too! I'm going to ask my management if she'd like me to take annual leave or bereavement/special leave as it's managers discretion in our trust xx my assumption was that bereavement leave was more for just after the person has died if you're unable to work etc. Our trust also has 'special leave' which I think is vague to cover things like compassionate leave and household emergencies! I'd check the policy and share the dilemma with your manager x

Everywhere I’ve worked attending a funeral has counted as bereavement leave.

This is our wording:

'One day’s paid bereavement leave may be granted to attend a funeral of relatives (those who are not immediate family members) or close friends.'

In reality my work often give you the standard week off for close relative and then an extra day or two for the funeral as paid leave, but my work are nice Smile
