Am I doomed here? Waiting for offer

I recently had a few interviews for a job and the feedback was that they liked me and are working to get approvals. 2 weeks on they are still trying to get the approvals. :( Today I got an email saying they are in some internal discussions before the last approvals?

What does this even mean?

I was so hopeful and happy and now 2 weeks on I'm a wreck and just am thinking they will never reach the offer stage. :(

Do I keep hoping or it is a lost cause?

It's just taken DH a month to get from "we want to offer you the job" to "here's an offer" and a further 2 months to get a sensible offer.
He started on Monday!

Thank you so much! I really needed to hear this! ❤️

A month for an approval here too, due to lots of paperwork.

CharlotteFlax · 07/06/2023 13:51

It's definitely not a lost cause!

And it's good that they're keeping you in the loop about all the bureaucracy - sounds like they're eager to get you on board!

Vivi0120 · 07/06/2023 14:37

Thank you so much!

The last time it took them 3 days to get me an offer but then I pushed as I had internal offer and needed quick answer so I know what to do.

Now, they told me it takes 3 business days but its taking over 2 weeks so I'm freaking out.

Otherwise, yes, they update me every 2 days and are super nice. I have never been on the hiring side so have no clue what the process entails.

Thank you all again! :)

It's definitely not a lost cause. I'm in the interviewing process at the moment, and everything is taking weeks longer than they say it will. I was given an initial timeline of screening call > 1 week then 1st round interview > 1 week then 2nd round interview > Offer.

Still haven't been told a date for first interview, and it's been three weeks. It's frustrating. But I'm still applying for other jobs until I hear for sure. It's better to hedge your bets.

Lesserspottedrobin · 16/06/2023 15:16

@Vivi0120 did you get your offer? I'm waiting for mine as the local government offered me a job (over the phone) on Monday and im waiting for whatever happens next. Its painfully slow. Even the woman who interviewed me warned me about the slowness.

I don't want them to forget about me 😂 or find a reason not to give me the job! (I worry a lot!!)

reddingweddy · 16/06/2023 15:32

I feel your pain op. I had a final interview on May 18th and I'm still waiting to hear! (Although they did say it may take until the end of June...)

Vivi0120 · 16/06/2023 23:05

I'm still waiting ... its shocking how slow they are!

They didn't send me and communication for a week and I chased and waited 2 more days and chased again yesterday and they finally responded they are still waiting for approvals.

I have lost hope and am applying g for other jobs can't see how you can't get your approvals 3 weeks plus. :(

I'm still waiting :D at this point I don't understand why they don't give me closure. They keep saying they are waiting but not giving anything specific. So to me ... I mean its been almost a month! What is there to discuss and agree??? I know the req is closed so they are not interviewing other people ... sooo weird and annoyingggg

What sort of industry is it? It sounds like they are trying to get budget approval or approval was granted but is now in question.

Is it a civil service or other public sector job? Some departments will suddenly impose a recruitment ban for cost cutting measures even when it has not been dictated by the government. Ifso, the recruiters are probably fighting their case to take you on if they advertised the job before the recruitment ban started.

Vivi0120 · 22/06/2023 13:27

It's one of the Big 4.

I'm suspecting it's budget discussion but it's just a guessing game. :(

OP posts:
ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 22/06/2023 13:33

I've worked extensively in the Big 4. Many are making lay-offs and slowing down hires currently which, I'd imagine, means they have to 'fine tooth comb' the business case for new hires. Those further up the food chain who can grant approval won't have the sense of urgency for doing so than those who will actually need you in their team. So, their differing priorities mean the decision you're waiting for could take ages. Very frustrating. What grade are you/will you be?

Vivi0120 · 22/06/2023 14:44

It's a manager position not sure the internal classification.

Thank you for the info.

I know it's a brand new role and they really need this person. However, it's so different from their core roles that the senior leadership doesn't even know what that person will do...

I hope they don't close out the req. It's really a dream role. I always dreamt of the big 4 but my career took me to IT so this role was such a good entry to this world to me and now I feel utterly heartbroken ... still hoping it will happen but simply can't comprehend what takes them so long!!!

@ChickenSoupAndLokshen, In your experience what do you think is the chance of getting an offer at some point as opposed to the offer just never materialising? (Don't try to spare my feelings ;))

OP posts:
ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 22/06/2023 22:29

Oh @Vivi0120, I'm sorry, I just don't know. That's a "how long is a piece of string?" question! Could be nothing more sinister than the need to wait for a monthly meeting to take place. Or many conversations and internal faff. Things can move very glacially in the big firms. Sending you lots of luck.

Vivi0120 · 22/06/2023 22:44

Thank you so much @ChickenSoupAndLokshen! :) Really appreciate your time and input.

I wait and see :) it's been so long now that at least I don't really expect anything and kind of have given up on it, so if something positive happens will be a nice surprise and if not just business as usual.

I remember when I applied for my current job I also got an internal promotion in my previous company so pushed them for a quick decision and from last interview to signing contract was 5 business days. :D The good old times ahahah.

OP posts:
Vivi0120 · 06/07/2023 21:18

I still haven't heard from them but in the meantime got another job offer so I guess this is what happens when someone takes 2 months to sign off final approval. :D

OP posts:
ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 06/07/2023 21:34

That's rubbish @Vivi0120 . Def must be a sign that the other Big 4 job wasn't meant to be. What a waste of time. Congrats on the new role though! Grin

Vivi0120 · 06/07/2023 21:58

Thank you! Ya, I invested hours of prep and worrying about it and they never even came back to me. I emailed them last week they didn't respond ... I'm in no mood to chase any more so suck it up and move on.

OP posts:
KindersFeepers · 07/07/2023 19:44

Sorry it was such a bad experience, but congrats on your different job.

Selfishly, it's reassuring to know other people have this same experience. I've been waiting on a Big4 application for weeks. The recruiter called me three weeks ago to say they wanted to set up an interview. I've followed up twice since then, but they don't have an interview schedule yet.

I've never known anything to move so slowly! It's a bit disheartening. I keep applying for other jobs, but it seems like every company is moving slowly atm.

lemonyfox · 07/07/2023 19:57

I work in an internal talent acquisition role, management. Because of the state of the economy and generally most of the industry slowing down external hiring, every single hire we make is scrutinised by SO MANY PEOPLE. The MD, the finance director, global HR, the CFO.... Back and forth looking at the justification for hire versus using internal people. It's taking us weeks to get formal offer approval whereas in previous times it was usually a week turnaround.

Sorry OP for your shit experience, but for a lot of businesses at the moment there's a reason for it and your recruiters are likely just as frustrated and in the dark as you.

Good luck in your new role!

Vivi0120 · 07/07/2023 20:21

Thank you all :) it's a true shame this is the current situation for so many people, but unfortunately is understandable.

@lemonyfox, This is such a pain as in the meantime you can lose so many good candidates!

@KindersFeepers I hope that they call you soon! I definitely can relate how annoying and stressful this is!

In my company we also had a hiring freeze and only juggled internal people around. Currently, my DH company also has a hiring freeze and they don't even know when it will be removed. But the silliest thing is their HR systems are shit so they keep posting jobs and people keep applying and are rejected for roles that don't exist.

I actually expect that they will at some point call me. I know they won't be able to internally fill in this role, it is totally outside of their scope, equally it's such a new team that they may decide they need a person with different skill set. In any case I think it's absolutely ridiculous to ask someone for their passport being scanned and sent so they prep an offer and then to never call you. I just hope if they decide to call at some point that their offer is worse than my current one. 🤣
