Probation extended but exceeded every objective

Line manager has decided to extend my 6 month probation for 3 months.

His reasoning is 'I was given an impossible task' as every other team member left within weeks of me starting and I was 'fire fighting' to cover off their work.

Despite this I have exceeded every objective I was given.

Should I challenge this with HR? Or just keep my head down and focus on impressing him in the next 3 months.

It's been a big blow to my confidence as I thought I was doing really well.

Great news about the interview - good for your confidence as well.

Not sure current job can be saved if he doesn't somehow apologise for his actions - which seems unlikely

daimbar · 08/02/2017 16:54

Thanks both!
New job has a lot of pros, it's slightly more money than current role and is nearby so I can keep on contact with my existing colleagues.
If I get it I will definitely not hold back in my exit interview!

Great news OP, well done Flowers fingers crossed for next week I still hate the idea of your bully manager getting away with it

daimbar · 08/02/2017 17:15

Thank you!
If I do get the job please feel free to share suggestions of how to deal with my boss? Do I try and get my own back somehow? Shall I tell everyone at the company he forced me out? Or simply make a dignified exit?

He needs to be pulled up on his behaviour. He is doing the companies reputation and bottom line no favours. I think a chat to the CEO about his actions to you and the team who left.

Atenco · 08/02/2017 20:49

Well on the one hand, I don't think the company deserves any helpful feedback from you but on the other hand you might help to save someone else from this abysmal treatment. I would also drop HR in it too because they could have put a stop to this behaviour.

girlelephant · 09/02/2017 15:36

That's great about your third interview! Sounds very promising so best of luck Smile

At companies I work with an exit interview and/or questionnaire is common which asks for feedback & reasons for leaving.

My advice would be not to burn bridges as you never know when you'll need those contact again. But you could word it carefully & honestly that had your probation been passed as you expected you would not have sought other roles.

myfavouritecolourispurple · 10/02/2017 15:20

Good luck with the 3rd interview.

HR lady said ultimately it's the manager's decision whether to pass probation or not and he doesn't need to justify it to anyone else

This is not right - there should be objective criteria against which someone is measured. If there is an exit interview (and it's not with the same person from HR!) I would make this very clear.

daimbar · 11/02/2017 07:39

Thanks all for the tips. The final interview is on Thursday morning so all being well I could potentially hand my notice in on the Friday or following Monday. Trying not to get my hopes up too much.

I think my boss is expecting it. He keeps saying things like 'xxx company are recruiting at the moment' as if to say 'why don't you look for another job'

The only conclusion i can come to is he doesn't like me! Which is all very weird as he says I am a great fit for the company, I have been nothing but pleasant and professional to him and he employed me in the first place!

Don't hand in your notice until you have a written offer, all references and pre-employment checks are passed etc.

Your boss sounds like a prize knob.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 16/02/2017 10:06

Hope it went well at the final interview OP.

daimbar · 16/02/2017 19:45

Thanks Unexpected Grin appreciate you checking in.

The interview was this morning (presentation to a panel of 5 followed by an hour of questions - gulp!) so was hoping to have an offer today but haven't heard anything yet.

I thought it went okay but could have answered some of the questions better.

Recruitment consultant said not to panic and I should get an answer tomorrow. Will keep you posted!

Here's hoping you get a positive answer tomorrow

daisychain01 · 17/02/2017 08:37

[waves flags] another cheerleader here rarara, hope you get a positive response!!

MoreThanUs · 17/02/2017 08:39

Hoping for great result for you!

daimbar · 17/02/2017 10:09

Thanks everyone! Still haven't heard anything. It's driving me crazy and part of me is thinking I must have messed up somehow because otherwise why the delay?

Usually with a 3rd interview I would expect to get an offer the same day.

I actually have the woman's mobile number who did the 1st and 2nd interviews and am tempted to call her and ask. It is that a bit much?!

OP posts:
girlelephant · 17/02/2017 10:28

Don't call heR, stay calm and hopefully you'll hear positive news today ☘️

daimbar · 17/02/2017 14:35

Still NO NEWS Sad not looking hopeful is it?

OP posts:
daimbar · 17/02/2017 16:12

I didn't get the job 😢

So back to square 1. Quite upset as I have had to take 2 half days for the interviews and I was told the 3rd interview was a final 'rubber stamp' meeting so don't know what I did to mess it up so badly!

Probation due to end beginning of March ...

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 17/02/2017 16:21

That's a shame. Will you get feedback?

Arkengarthdale · 17/02/2017 17:00

I'm really sorry to hear that. It must be quite a blow.

Time to reassess all your options

Good luck Flowers

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 17/02/2017 19:53

I'm so sorry OP. I hope you get some good feedback to help you be successful in the future.

Take it easy this weekend but please try to keep HR on your boss's case when you get back to work.

Wishing you all the best Flowers
