You may have heard the dreadfully sad news that lovely Mumsnetter Mowly77 died on November 18th. Cancer is a devastating, insidious and indiscriminate disease. Life has been very cruel to them all. Her daughter is still very little, only 5 this year. Bless her heart. Mowly77 had been organising the Stage 4 Cancer thread on Mumsnet, not a place anyone wants to be, but she did so with resilience, rage, humour, alongside absolute love and support.

We are so glad we can make a Woolly Hug, we hope it may give whatever comfort it can. There will be love crafted into every stitch. We want it to be a celebration, tribute and to help her daughter keep memories.

So we are now asking for help once again. We shall need crafters and donors of funds and wool, can you help us? We’d be so grateful. Thank you so much.

Important crafting info
Squares to be six inches, using 4mm needles or hook. Please knot off VERY carefully when finishing or changing colour and sew your ends in, thank you! No blocking please, makes it much easier to join squares.

Simple or complex, made by beginner or expert, we genuinely welcome them all. It really is the love and thought that counts.

Ideas from her wonderful friends.
Initials are F and T
They LOVED cats, so all the cats please!
The family live at the seaside, so anything there please.
Her relatives are from the US, so a flag would be good.
Books/newspaper, typewriter would be good, she was a journalist.
She loved doughnuts, so this could be a fun square.
She loved music, particularly Madonna and Kate Bush.
She often wore red lipstick
Big bright flowers - she had a big coat she wore on the beach, covered in these.
Parks, countryside - she loved walking

The Colours
Sky and sea blue
Greens
Rich purples

Then to create the above ideas, so accents/ not whole squares
Cat colours, whatever you need for cats, greys, orange, black, browns etc
Red, just this one please Drops Merino Extra Fine DK 11, Crimson red.
Yellow, this one please.. Drops merino extra fine DK no 24 ‘light yellow’ can be bought here..
Pinks

(Please shout if you need any others to achieve this)

The Yarn we will be Using….
Debbie Bliss Rialto DK only available on Love Crafts
Drops Merino Extra Fine DK
Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK
Katia Merino 100% DK
King Cole Luxury Merino DK
Patons Merino Extrafine DK

Just from the brands listed please because we know they combine for wash and wear. If you still have any of our wools that have been discontinued - Artesano Superwash Merino DK, Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK or James C. Brett Pure Merino DK in your stash, please do use them.

It is very nearly Christmas and we know this is a very busy time, but are keen to get underway. We will have a last posting date of January 27th, so plenty of time we hope. Posting will be Teddington, please message if you need the address. If you'd like to include a card for her family , please send with your squares. And please don't forget to include your name!

Thank you lovely crafters

@SpiralArchitect your flower squares are beautiful and so detailed.

Fantasea · 09/01/2024 14:07

I've finished these two plain squares, one from me and one from my lovely friend who also knew Mowly on the cancer thread. We're both thinking of beautiful Mowly and her family Xxx.

A couple of wonky cats, a flower and a beach inspired Granny... Not entirely happy with the cats, esp. the one on green which looks more like a grumpy rabbit!

Brilliant @BlueEyeshadow ☺️

MrsFloof · 11/01/2024 21:59

They are brilliant BlueEyeshadow The grumpy rabbit is my favourite and I am sure a 5 year old girl will be very happy with any cat / rabbit.

Lovely squares IoWFairy thank you.

MrsFloof · 11/01/2024 22:00

And beautiful squares Spiral and Fantasea Love those flowers.

ElizaBlack · 13/01/2024 15:01

I’ve made this first US flag, and am due to make a second.

I made the border outside the “stars” one stitch bigger at the top and on the left hand side to allow for losing one stitch in the seaming. However, if the squares are crocheted together, does this happen? Should I have a 2 stitch border all round?

MrsFloof · 13/01/2024 15:06

Thanks so much Eliza that is an amazing flag, you are so talented.

TheIoWfairy · 13/01/2024 15:51

@ElizaBlack that’s just perfect. Absolutely lovely!

ElizaBlack · 13/01/2024 16:21

Thank you both for your kind words. It’s a challenge to get 13 stripes and 50 stars in a 6” square but I think I’ve managed it.
My “stars” are much more even with Swiss darning than when I knitted them in.

Fantasea · 13/01/2024 16:52

@ElizaBlack what an amazing square, you're very talented. I've tried to knit alternate stitches of two colours on a doll's dress I was making and couldn't get the tension right. Your idea of darning the stitches on works so well.

3luckystars · 13/01/2024 16:57

Beautiful

Mammma91 · 13/01/2024 17:00

I don’t have the skills to do this, but i would make a financial contribution towards wool. Rip, she sounded so lovely. My tonight’s are with her family and loved ones.

Yiayoula · 13/01/2024 20:01

What a beautiful blanket this is going to be !

Tilllly · 14/01/2024 12:24

TheIoWfairy · 14/01/2024 15:25
