We have been very moved by a request from the Octavia Appeal at the Brompton Hospital. The Brompton Hospital is a specialist heart and lung centre in London complete with the second largest paediatric intensive care unit in the country. This unit takes the sickest babies and children from all over, some transferred immediately after birth, others have become too sick to be cared for at other major hospitals and most are already on life support when they arrive. These babies and children are incredibly sick, and very sadly not all survive. The Octavia Appeal have approached us and asked if we are able to make blankets for these babies who have very sadly passed away.

We are looking for crafters and donors to help make this possible. At an intensely bleak and dark time there is still something very positive that we can do for the baby and their family. Our blankets are always handmade with love and compassion and so are perfect. We can help care for the whole family at this time by making the baby comfortable and snuggled up whilst sending love and a hug to the parents.

We know that we have many crafters and donors who have first hand experience of such devastating loss. We understand that this is a very difficult request, but if you can join with us, and are able to help, then we would love to have you on board. From speaking to some of you, we know how incredibly important blankets like these are to those who receive them.

Thanks Thanks Thanks

Like Little Hugs, Angel Hugs will be an ongoing project and the two will run alongside each other.

To our lovely crafters Thanks

  • Angel Hugs are to be all white and can be knitted or crocheted in any wool suitable for a baby blanket, so 4ply, DK, just as long as it feels soft and cosy. The design is up to you, but it should be kept simple. Angel Hugs can also be sewn using pure cotton and good quality fleece, again white please and in a simple design.

  • Minimum size : 24 inches square, going up to a maximum of approx. 30 inches square.

  • If making a whole Angel Hug feels too much, but you would still like to support this, we would be pleased to accept simple knitted and crocheted 6 inch squares, which we will hook together. If choosing this option, please use Stylecraft Special DK in white.

  • If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM me and we'll try to help you with materials.

To our lovely Donors Thanks

We would be very grateful for support from anyone who would like to donate funds to help with this. You can either donate via Paypal admin@ woollyhugs.com but please add a message so we know who to thank and which project it is for. If you don't have Paypal, please PM me as we have other ways that you can donate. We are so grateful to all our donors, without you, these projects could not function. Thanks

Knotty is here to help with any questions, and please PM me if you'd like to and are able to join us with this.

It is a very sad request we are making, and yet there is something very positive here too, and we know the Blanketeers have big hearts.

Sometimes thank you doesn't seem enough, but thank you once again Xx

Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

OK I am going to venture out into the cold at lunchtime and brave Poundland ! Reading store probably won't have any but I will end up buying loads of other stuff :)

BornToFolk · 29/11/2012 10:56

I'd be honoured to make one of these blankets. I wanted to practise my crochet anyway and this seems like the ideal project.

Havetowearheels, I'm in Reading too! Might bump into you in Poundland at lunchtime!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/11/2012 12:08

Lunchtime, well sort of Brew Smile

BornToFolk - welcome on board, we are so glad to have you with us. Thanks Hopefully all the info is in the OP, it is also on our website www.woollyhugs.com and do join us on Facebook at MNWoollyHugs.com, if you've not seen us there already. And thank you Thanks

Have fun at the Reading Poundland Thursday Lunchtime Meet Grin

BornToFolk I shall be sporting a red carnation in my lapel and probably a red nose on my face :)

PurpleFrog · 29/11/2012 13:07

I would like to be involved in this project as well. I have a pack of Patons Sea Spray in white that has been languishing in my stash for decades a little while which might fit the bill perfectly. I will do a swatch and see how soft it is. It is a knobbly yarn with a slight sheen so might look good with a plain white of a similar weight.

It will probably be the Christmas holidays before I can start it. Are you thinking about a 1st posting date before Christmas? Or does it depend on how many are finished in the next few weeks?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/11/2012 13:40

Thank you so much PurpleFrog, that is fabulous, we would love to have you on board Smile

Knotty and I haven't spoken about a first batch deadline yet, let me come back to you on that, hopefully later today, but we really do appreciate that everyone is so busy at this time of year. One thing is for sure, the project is ongoing. We will receive your Angel Hug with enormous thanks whenever it should arrive. Xx

Thanks

Hi Woolfey! We should arrange a MN Angel Hugs meet up (especially as I've sneaked a look at your profile and see you know how to crochet....your squares and blankets are beautiful)

I didn't go to Poundland Blush as I went for pizza instead...I will definitely go next week though and upate as to the status of the cheap yarn.

By the way, does the yarn we use for this have to be machine washable? And 100% white? I've got some in stash that I'm not sure is machine washable and while it is mostly white, there are some flecks of blue/grey in it. It's very pretty and would definitely make a snuggly blanket but I won't use it if not suitable.

ThePigOfHappiness · 29/11/2012 15:14

Bought 400 grams of lovely soft white wool today so I can get started this evening Smile

HaveToWearHeels · 29/11/2012 16:12

No wool in Poundland ladies, I did get some battery operated fairy lights for DD's bedroom though so not a wasted journey :)

3 of us in Reading, maybe we could set up a Reading branch of the Angel Hugs team !

HaveToWearHeels · 29/11/2012 16:15

Woolfy just sneeked a look at your profile, your squares are beautiful so you embroider them ?

The Reading Branch Smile

Woolfey's embroidered squares are absolutely gorgeous, just beautiful, she is a star!

BornToFolk - we chose pure white for Angel Hugs as it felt more in keeping with the project, this wasn't from the Brompton, this was from us, and we really felt strongly that they be distinct from Little Hugs and the big blankets, so if there was something else you could use that would be great.

Let me check with Knots about the washing question Thanks

there was still wool in the Birmingham poundland today. let me know if you want me to get some - multiples of 3 though as they are on 3 for £2!Grin

Jingleflobba · 29/11/2012 17:59

Count me in, knittings a bit rusty but I think I can manage a blanket. I do a nice line in little knitted flowers that I stitch onto scarves, will they be ok?

BornToFolk · 29/11/2012 20:33

Woolfrey and Havetowearheels, if you do fancy meeting up for a bit of a knit/crochet and chat then do let me know. I'm thinking probably in the New Year, maybe a nice pub or cafe for a bit of weekend afternoon crafting?

PM me if interested!

KnottyLocks · 29/11/2012 20:37

Jingle , the little flowers sound perfect . Thank you Smile

CoffeeandChocolateplease · 29/11/2012 20:41

Count me in too, another one for starting after Christmas though!

KnottyLocks · 29/11/2012 20:56

After Christmas is fine, honestly. We really do appreciate that this is a very busy time for people. Smile

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/11/2012 21:01

Oh we really do.

Thank you to everyone, just answering PMs Thanks

Just doing a row of chain before my 10th row of double crochets, starting to get to that slightly tricky to handle stage/size!

Woolly stuff is working out lovely though, very snuggly! Still terrified that I'm going to get it dirty!! (Every time I pick it up one of the cats decide they want to come and sit with me Hmm )

Thanks again to the lovely donors and Pistey for the Woolly wool! Smile

KnottyLocks · 29/11/2012 21:14

Bebe, we ca always give it a quick wash so don't worry Smile

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/11/2012 21:18

I've bought the wool, but I think after Christmas is realistic for me too.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/11/2012 21:34

Thanks WhoKnows.... It's a very busy time, we really do appreciate that, after Christmas is more than fine, we will be so grateful to receive these Angel Hugs whenever they arrive. Thank you X

Am being extra cautious and making the cats sit the other end of the sofa and it is being kept in it's own special bag! Wink
