We have been very moved by a request from the Octavia Appeal at the Brompton Hospital. The Brompton Hospital is a specialist heart and lung centre in London complete with the second largest paediatric intensive care unit in the country. This unit takes the sickest babies and children from all over, some transferred immediately after birth, others have become too sick to be cared for at other major hospitals and most are already on life support when they arrive. These babies and children are incredibly sick, and very sadly not all survive. The Octavia Appeal have approached us and asked if we are able to make blankets for these babies who have very sadly passed away.

We are looking for crafters and donors to help make this possible. At an intensely bleak and dark time there is still something very positive that we can do for the baby and their family. Our blankets are always handmade with love and compassion and so are perfect. We can help care for the whole family at this time by making the baby comfortable and snuggled up whilst sending love and a hug to the parents.

We know that we have many crafters and donors who have first hand experience of such devastating loss. We understand that this is a very difficult request, but if you can join with us, and are able to help, then we would love to have you on board. From speaking to some of you, we know how incredibly important blankets like these are to those who receive them.

Thanks Thanks Thanks

Like Little Hugs, Angel Hugs will be an ongoing project and the two will run alongside each other.

To our lovely crafters Thanks

  • Angel Hugs are to be all white and can be knitted or crocheted in any wool suitable for a baby blanket, so 4ply, DK, just as long as it feels soft and cosy. The design is up to you, but it should be kept simple. Angel Hugs can also be sewn using pure cotton and good quality fleece, again white please and in a simple design.

  • Minimum size : 24 inches square, going up to a maximum of approx. 30 inches square.

  • If making a whole Angel Hug feels too much, but you would still like to support this, we would be pleased to accept simple knitted and crocheted 6 inch squares, which we will hook together. If choosing this option, please use Stylecraft Special DK in white.

  • If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM me and we'll try to help you with materials.

To our lovely Donors Thanks

We would be very grateful for support from anyone who would like to donate funds to help with this. You can either donate via Paypal admin@ woollyhugs.com but please add a message so we know who to thank and which project it is for. If you don't have Paypal, please PM me as we have other ways that you can donate. We are so grateful to all our donors, without you, these projects could not function. Thanks

Knotty is here to help with any questions, and please PM me if you'd like to and are able to join us with this.

It is a very sad request we are making, and yet there is something very positive here too, and we know the Blanketeers have big hearts.

Sometimes thank you doesn't seem enough, but thank you once again Xx

Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

Hi, I'd love to do an Angel hug blanket, what a wonderful idea.
I'm very new to crochet though so it might take a little while! How many 100g balls does it roughly take for a complete blanket, will get online and order some now Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/01/2014 13:54

Hello there Scarlotti and welcome, we are very glad to have you on board

Thanks

Please don't worry about the time it takes, whenever it is ready, we will be very glad to receive your Angel Hug, bless you.

It takes approximately 200g to make a 24 inch square blanket, and please use any white wool suitable for a baby blanket, just as long as it feels soft and cosy. The yarn we recommend is Stylecraft Special DK which is readily available in online stores such as Deramores, Masons, Wool Warehouse etc.

Thank you so much. When you are ready to post, please PM me and I'll send you the details. If not already there, do join us on our Facebook page MNWoollyHugs or Twitter @MNWoollyHugs as these are good ways of keeping in touch and seeing photos of all lovely blankets that arrive.

Thank you.

Oh I am so glad it arrived ok!

Thank you for setting the project up. Although it took me a very long time to get it finished, it was a sense of achievement when it was done!

Thanks
RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/01/2014 09:26

Thanks lovely leaf we have our fabulous friends at the Brompton to thank too.

Next collection will be going to them end of Feb time, yours will be there. So it doesn't matter how long it takes to make, it will go to a family in very bleak times and in great need. Bless you.

Thanks

Hello,
I've been thinking about this for a few days now, and just got a couple of queries.
I thought a centre of Roman stitch with a border of seed stitch would be something I could do, would that be alright?
Also a lot of the white yarns are polyester/acrylic, (though they do say they are soft) so can they be used, or is wool better? Also a lot of them have a pearly or irridescent thread in them, are that type to be avoided?
I wouldn't need donated yarn, I could provide my own.
Smile

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/01/2014 08:57

Bless your heart Allalonenow you are lovely.

Thanks

Your blanket plan sounds lovely, it will be beautiful. We recommend Stylecraft Special DK in white, it is an acrylic, beautifully soft and folk like working with it. It is very easy to get hold of from Masons plenty of others have it too.

There is no huge rush, this is an ongoing project. Whenever you finish, your Angel Hug will go to the Brompton for a family in a very bleak time, and it will mean the world to them. So thank you Thanks

do they have to be knitted or crocheted? Would I be able to quilt one?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/01/2014 10:18

Yes, indeed you would headless In the very first collection we sent, I'd made a very basic cotton quilt that went. Not had any since, but we are very open to them Thanks

Our website is here, all the info is there

Thank you so much, can't really explain how much we appreciate this X

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone that's done a full angel hug knows roughly how many stitches they cast on? I have a lovely stitch dictionary so I'm hoping to be able to use it for this project.

Allalonenow · 23/01/2014 14:35

Hello Song
I'm just starting an angel hug, so a bit of trial and a lot of error for me. I cast on 320 stitches, but with then all crammed on one needle it was impossible to measure properly.
After a few rows I've moved them onto a circular needle, and found that it is twice as long as required!!
So I am going to try 170 stitches next, I think that will be about 29 inches, so a nice generous size.
I'll post again when I've done a few rows and measured.

SongBirdsKeepSinging · 23/01/2014 14:47

Hi allalonenow I've just found this blog which gives cast on amounts for different sizes of blankets, maybe it will help?

blogs.thetucker.com/knit/2012/03/11/wrapped-stitches-baby-blanket/

PurpleFrog · 23/01/2014 15:03

Songbirds - the number of stitches you need will depend on the stitch pattern you intend to do. Do a sample piece, over 20-30 stitches, or a couple of pattern repeats, with at least 10 rows and measure it . Then work out how many you stitches you will need to cast on for the length you need. Alternatively, do the diagonal garter stitch blanket suggested in the info about Angel Hugs. You just keep increasing until the side length is correct, then go into decrease mode.

SongBirdsKeepSinging · 23/01/2014 15:26

thanks purplefrog I will do a sample piece when my wool arrives, thanks for your help
