We have been very moved by a request from the Octavia Appeal at the Brompton Hospital. The Brompton Hospital is a specialist heart and lung centre in London complete with the second largest paediatric intensive care unit in the country. This unit takes the sickest babies and children from all over, some transferred immediately after birth, others have become too sick to be cared for at other major hospitals and most are already on life support when they arrive. These babies and children are incredibly sick, and very sadly not all survive. The Octavia Appeal have approached us and asked if we are able to make blankets for these babies who have very sadly passed away.

We are looking for crafters and donors to help make this possible. At an intensely bleak and dark time there is still something very positive that we can do for the baby and their family. Our blankets are always handmade with love and compassion and so are perfect. We can help care for the whole family at this time by making the baby comfortable and snuggled up whilst sending love and a hug to the parents.

We know that we have many crafters and donors who have first hand experience of such devastating loss. We understand that this is a very difficult request, but if you can join with us, and are able to help, then we would love to have you on board. From speaking to some of you, we know how incredibly important blankets like these are to those who receive them.

Thanks Thanks Thanks

Like Little Hugs, Angel Hugs will be an ongoing project and the two will run alongside each other.

To our lovely crafters Thanks

  • Angel Hugs are to be all white and can be knitted or crocheted in any wool suitable for a baby blanket, so 4ply, DK, just as long as it feels soft and cosy. The design is up to you, but it should be kept simple. Angel Hugs can also be sewn using pure cotton and good quality fleece, again white please and in a simple design.

  • Minimum size : 24 inches square, going up to a maximum of approx. 30 inches square.

  • If making a whole Angel Hug feels too much, but you would still like to support this, we would be pleased to accept simple knitted and crocheted 6 inch squares, which we will hook together. If choosing this option, please use Stylecraft Special DK in white.

  • If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM me and we'll try to help you with materials.

To our lovely Donors Thanks

We would be very grateful for support from anyone who would like to donate funds to help with this. You can either donate via Paypal admin@ woollyhugs.com but please add a message so we know who to thank and which project it is for. If you don't have Paypal, please PM me as we have other ways that you can donate. We are so grateful to all our donors, without you, these projects could not function. Thanks

Knotty is here to help with any questions, and please PM me if you'd like to and are able to join us with this.

It is a very sad request we are making, and yet there is something very positive here too, and we know the Blanketeers have big hearts.

Sometimes thank you doesn't seem enough, but thank you once again Xx

Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

More white woolly stuff arrived this morning, thank you Piste! Smile

purplewithred · 05/01/2013 12:18

I'd love to knit one of these next. Can I have recommendations for yarn and quantitities please - I'm going to be knitting and it won't be lacey.

PurpleFrog · 05/01/2013 12:20

Following my speedy delivery from Deramores yesterday, I completed my Angel Hug this morning. I did the SANDS pattern, but worked 8 rows in white Stylecraft Special DK followed by 8 rows in a bobbly slightly off-white Patons Seaspray (from my stash!) throughout. Instead of the knitted border, I did a crochet one - 2 rounds of half treble in Stylecraft with a round of shell edging to finish it off. I am now debating whether or not to wash it. What do you think? I have been more careful this time to keep it free from dog hair. It still looks white... but the Patons Seaspray has been languishing in my stash for a loooooong time!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 05/01/2013 14:47

Thanks Thanks purplewithred, I would recommend white stylecraft and to make an Angel Hug you need 2 balls of the stuff, so 200g. Sadly Deramores are out of white at the mo, they've been doing a special offer on Stylecraft.

Purplefrog, happy to wash here if you like? Thanks

Thanks for the offer Pistey, but I think I'll just do it here. In fact I think I'll leave it just now as I may have a friend to wash it with in a couple of weeks time. I am planning to start another this weekend - I need a fairly mindless project to work on while watching all the new series that are starting on telly next week! [And to stop me drinking wine and scoffing Christmas chocolates!]

KnottyLocks · 07/01/2013 07:56

Although Deramores don't have the Stylecraft Special DK in White at the mo, they do have Stylecraft Baby Aran in 200g balls. I have some : it's soft and hooking together very quickly .

Just uploaded photos of beautiful Angel Hugs arriving safely today, from the lovely Woolfey and GetOnYourDancingShoes. Enormous thanks to them both, they are just beautiful. Have a look at them on our Facebook page MNWoollyHugs.

Well, crochet has beaten me again! I keep labouring on and producing wonky looking weird squares, then looking at the beautiful blankets that other MNers have crocheted on Facebook and feeling v inadequate!

So, I'm going to save my crochet practice for another project and go back to knitting.

I found a pattern for a lovely baby blanket that I bought years ago and never made but it would be perfect for this, I think.

I want to make something really lovely and my crochet is far from being lovely at this stage!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/01/2013 21:09

Oh bless you BornToFolk, thank you so much Thanks Your knitted Hug will be lovely ThanksThanks

Keep trying with the crochet though, you will get there Smile

backwardpossom · 09/01/2013 22:37

I'd love to join in with this too, if I may. Not promising I'll be particularly quick, as I'm a bit of a beginner, but I've made a start and am pleased with how it's gone so far. What a great cause x

RatherBeOnThePiste · 10/01/2013 07:05

Bless you both, this is an ongoing project, so when you are ready to send, we will be very happy to receive and take to the Brompton. And yes, it really is, in such a devastating time, there is something very positive we can do to help support and comfort these poor families. Thank you X

Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

I have one angel hug finished. And I'm part way through another and to try and utilise all the wool I have I'm crcoheting little squares and then crocheting them all together. May take a bit longer, but means I can use all those little bits of white I had left over from the ends of the balls I had already used.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 10/01/2013 12:48

If making a whole blanket feels too much, but you would still like to support this, we will always be v pleased to accept simple knitted/crocheted 6" squares, which we will hook together. If choosing this option, please use Stylecraft Special DK in white.

We have some donated wool for this if anyone is thinking of starting and would like some. Just PM me Thanks
