We have been very moved by a request from the Octavia Appeal at the Brompton Hospital. The Brompton Hospital is a specialist heart and lung centre in London complete with the second largest paediatric intensive care unit in the country. This unit takes the sickest babies and children from all over, some transferred immediately after birth, others have become too sick to be cared for at other major hospitals and most are already on life support when they arrive. These babies and children are incredibly sick, and very sadly not all survive. The Octavia Appeal have approached us and asked if we are able to make blankets for these babies who have very sadly passed away.

We are looking for crafters and donors to help make this possible. At an intensely bleak and dark time there is still something very positive that we can do for the baby and their family. Our blankets are always handmade with love and compassion and so are perfect. We can help care for the whole family at this time by making the baby comfortable and snuggled up whilst sending love and a hug to the parents.

We know that we have many crafters and donors who have first hand experience of such devastating loss. We understand that this is a very difficult request, but if you can join with us, and are able to help, then we would love to have you on board. From speaking to some of you, we know how incredibly important blankets like these are to those who receive them.

Thanks Thanks Thanks

Like Little Hugs, Angel Hugs will be an ongoing project and the two will run alongside each other.

To our lovely crafters Thanks

  • Angel Hugs are to be all white and can be knitted or crocheted in any wool suitable for a baby blanket, so 4ply, DK, just as long as it feels soft and cosy. The design is up to you, but it should be kept simple. Angel Hugs can also be sewn using pure cotton and good quality fleece, again white please and in a simple design.

  • Minimum size : 24 inches square, going up to a maximum of approx. 30 inches square.

  • If making a whole Angel Hug feels too much, but you would still like to support this, we would be pleased to accept simple knitted and crocheted 6 inch squares, which we will hook together. If choosing this option, please use Stylecraft Special DK in white.

  • If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM me and we'll try to help you with materials.

To our lovely Donors Thanks

We would be very grateful for support from anyone who would like to donate funds to help with this. You can either donate via Paypal admin@ woollyhugs.com but please add a message so we know who to thank and which project it is for. If you don't have Paypal, please PM me as we have other ways that you can donate. We are so grateful to all our donors, without you, these projects could not function. Thanks

Knotty is here to help with any questions, and please PM me if you'd like to and are able to join us with this.

It is a very sad request we are making, and yet there is something very positive here too, and we know the Blanketeers have big hearts.

Sometimes thank you doesn't seem enough, but thank you once again Xx

Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

Hi Can I have some advice please? DH got me some wool today but not sure if it is right or not. It is Baby Bonus Lustre DK but doesn't mention whether it is 4ply or not Confused It is white with a silver strand running through. Don't mind at all if it is wrong, I can easily exchange it .
I am planning on doing a blanket, does anyone have a simple pattern for me please? Or can I just do like a giant granny square? Any advice welcomeThanks From a novice crocheter x

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/12/2012 18:23

Hello, I've just seen this thread and would love to help.
Some friends of mine have been treated by The Brompton so it is a cause close to my heart.

CatWithARabbit · 18/12/2012 18:40

The Christmas madness got me but am now ready to knit squares again.
Looking forward to finishing lots over Christmas holidays.

KnottyLocks · 18/12/2012 19:03

Wisden, if you hang on, I'll be back once I've sorted my cherubs.
If you have a look at the wrap around label, it will suggest a hook or needle size.

KnottyLocks · 18/12/2012 19:07

Hang on, just spotted you said DK!

That's fine Smile

RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/12/2012 19:15

Just replying to PMs Thanks

ShoeJunkie - very glad to have you on board, welcome, you should have mail from me Xmas Smile Thanks

wisden I am working on two Angel Hugs at the mo and one is a giant granny square, the other I am making with MOS and we are doing six inch squares in crochet and knitting and hooking them together, eight of each. I think a giant granny might be easiest then no joining, but have a think, and your wool is fine Smile Thanks

And we have a lovely donor to thank Thanks Thanks

Blondeshavemorefun Bless you B, your donation has arrived safely and we are very grateful to you, I have a lovely knitter who will make on behalf of you both, thank you so much, you are a star X

Just checking in quickly to say that I'm still working on mine but its slow progress as I'm having to YouTube every time the pattern changes thanks to having the memory of a goldfish! :) I really hope to get it done over the next few weeks though, sorry its taking me a while!

KnottyLocks · 18/12/2012 19:25

Nix, panic not and no need to apologise as this is an ongoing project.

Nixea feeling your pain, have just completed my first loopy 3D flower square using you tube, I can't read patterns for crochet lol

Have just posted my first Angel Hug Pistey, It is not quite square though as I started to run out of Wool, what it lacks in size it makes up for in sparkle lol.

KnottyLocks · 19/12/2012 19:31

Sparkle and love. Smile

MrsPennyapple · 27/12/2012 21:10

Hello, just checking in here too (formerly TiredofZombies, have namechanged.)

I really, really want to get involved in this but am determined to finish some of my current projects, including a Little Hug I'm working on. Hope everyone is well.

Festivedidi · 27/12/2012 21:18

I've finished mine now. I think it looks pretty good even if I do say so myself. I'll get it posted in the next couple of days.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 28/12/2012 11:13

Afternoon. Smile

Finally back from travels into No-3G land.

DoesntTurkeyNSproutSoupDragOn · 28/12/2012 16:19

Aha!

I simply wanted to bounce in and talk about my bargain from Hobbycraft... 10 balls of Sirdar White Whispers yarn for 49p a ball! I nearly leapt on it shouting "Angel Hug!" but restrained myself, simply shovelling it into my basket.

It feels like it has the same lovely soft drapeyness as the Baby Bamboo - 6 balls are proper white and 4 are a minute hint of duck egg blue. Will look fab as a ripple I think :)
