We have been very moved by a request from the Octavia Appeal at the Brompton Hospital. The Brompton Hospital is a specialist heart and lung centre in London complete with the second largest paediatric intensive care unit in the country. This unit takes the sickest babies and children from all over, some transferred immediately after birth, others have become too sick to be cared for at other major hospitals and most are already on life support when they arrive. These babies and children are incredibly sick, and very sadly not all survive. The Octavia Appeal have approached us and asked if we are able to make blankets for these babies who have very sadly passed away.

We are looking for crafters and donors to help make this possible. At an intensely bleak and dark time there is still something very positive that we can do for the baby and their family. Our blankets are always handmade with love and compassion and so are perfect. We can help care for the whole family at this time by making the baby comfortable and snuggled up whilst sending love and a hug to the parents.

We know that we have many crafters and donors who have first hand experience of such devastating loss. We understand that this is a very difficult request, but if you can join with us, and are able to help, then we would love to have you on board. From speaking to some of you, we know how incredibly important blankets like these are to those who receive them.

Thanks Thanks Thanks

Like Little Hugs, Angel Hugs will be an ongoing project and the two will run alongside each other.

To our lovely crafters Thanks

  • Angel Hugs are to be all white and can be knitted or crocheted in any wool suitable for a baby blanket, so 4ply, DK, just as long as it feels soft and cosy. The design is up to you, but it should be kept simple. Angel Hugs can also be sewn using pure cotton and good quality fleece, again white please and in a simple design.

  • Minimum size : 24 inches square, going up to a maximum of approx. 30 inches square.

  • If making a whole Angel Hug feels too much, but you would still like to support this, we would be pleased to accept simple knitted and crocheted 6 inch squares, which we will hook together. If choosing this option, please use Stylecraft Special DK in white.

  • If you would like to take part in this project but feel you can't due to the costs involved, please PM me and we'll try to help you with materials.

To our lovely Donors Thanks

We would be very grateful for support from anyone who would like to donate funds to help with this. You can either donate via Paypal admin@ woollyhugs.com but please add a message so we know who to thank and which project it is for. If you don't have Paypal, please PM me as we have other ways that you can donate. We are so grateful to all our donors, without you, these projects could not function. Thanks

Knotty is here to help with any questions, and please PM me if you'd like to and are able to join us with this.

It is a very sad request we are making, and yet there is something very positive here too, and we know the Blanketeers have big hearts.

Sometimes thank you doesn't seem enough, but thank you once again Xx

Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks Thanks

I started mine today. I'm doing some angel squares and some heart squares. I'm not sure if I'll do some plain grannys as well but I might do.

Festivedidi · 04/12/2012 23:33

Oh, I forgot to say, dd1 (13) is planning on contributing a square or 2 because she thinks it's such a good cause. So much that she's learning to crochet Shock. There may be a couple of wobbly grannys in the middle of my hug but it's the love that goes into it that counts isn't it?

I bought the wrong wool! I was planning on just doing 1 or 2 squares, but couldnt remember which wool it had to be, so I guess I'm doing a whole blanket! [nervous]

Qust a quick question (and please remember I'm a beginner!) How do you edge the blanket once youve done the squares? I'm imagining itsgoing to look quite unfinished? and its going to need an edging. do you crocet around the squares?

rubycon · 07/12/2012 11:09

white wool has arrived, so that'll finish off one and should complete another.

KnottyLocks · 07/12/2012 17:30

Addicted, are you knitting or hooking your blanket?

Options:

Simple DC crochet edge, with or without picot.

Knitted edge, done separately and stitched on.

Send for us to edge, with extra wool.

KnottyLocks · 07/12/2012 17:32

Or option 4:

Make some squares. Send then and the leftover wool. We'll hook then together and edge.

Any of those really Smile

rubycon · 07/12/2012 17:35

hmmmm, having sat knitting I will need another ball to finish a whole one and I'm out of colours :(

I'll post off those I've finished on Monday.

BornToFolk · 07/12/2012 18:25

addicted, I did the same thing! Bought Stylecraft Baby instead of Stylecraft Special. Oh well, as you say, it should motivate me to do a whole blanket.

A simple knitted edging would be to pick up stitches all along the edge and do a few rows. Garter or moss stitch would look nice and wouldn't roll.

Or as Knotty says, you could do a double crochet edging. Even a crochet-challenged person like me can do that!

Knotty - how do you hook the squares together? I'm intrigued!

KnottyLocks · 07/12/2012 22:49

Hook them together :

Wrong sides of squares together, DC across the top. Keep going by...
Picking up next 2 squares, DC across...

Etc until you've reached the end of the row .

Once you've done all the squares one way, (eg. Horizontals) start on the verticals/ other way.

Then edge.

I quite like a HTr edge, then DC around after that, with or without picot. Seems to lie flatter for me. Tis just one option though. Smile

BornToFolk · 08/12/2012 08:23

Thanks Knotty! I'm definitely going to try that, seaming is one of my pet hates.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through a DC square. It took me about 5 attempts last night as I kept losing stitches and it was ending up more triangular than square shape. Think I've got it sorted now though!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/12/2012 15:32

ThanksThanksThanks A beautiful corner to corner crocheted Angel Hug has arrived safely from the lovely StellaMarie a huge thank you to you, tis beautiful X
