In a wider thread where he suggests progressives are on the back foot. https://x.com/luketryl/status/2099139172598505890?s=46

he is getting push back about his framing of women's rights v "gender identity" as its somehow socially conservative that women's rights are supported

because he's very clear with his framing that socially conservative should be seen as a bad thing

I don't think he's a lefty. He was a conservative SpAd.

If you insist on following me around making aggressive and bizarre comments, I really will have to start to question your sincerity.

Huh? Why do you think I am following you? For all I know you’re following me! I asked you to explain your somewhat cryptic remark.

Rightsraptor · 13/09/2026 17:43

If Tryl was at Stonewall I'm guessing he's gay? Though he may not be, of course. I sometimes get the feeling that some gay men are particularly stubborn in refusing to acknowledge women's needs for single sex spaces, even more so than their straight brethren.

You do have a tendency to just plop comments on threads with no explanation of what you are trying to add to a discussion.

I man to be fair, just plopping a random politicians name down did seem a bit odd….

If you're not aware of Theresa May - former Conservative Prime Minister's - push to reform the GRA and introduce self-ID and it's relevance on a thread about whether women's rights are a socially conservative message, then I can't help you.

If you expect to post cryptic things like "Two words - Theresa May" without being asked what exactly you mean by it, you don't belong on any kind of discussion forum, where users can and will challenge anything they want to.

So why not say that? Why did you just write 'Theresa May'? We're not bloody mindreaders. Are you one of those people who think that everyone else is privy to their internal dialogue?

Wasn’t More in Common founded after Jo Cox’s death? It’s notable on that X thread Tryl links sex realism with opposition to assisted death - the bill which was of course originally brought forward by Jo Cox’s sister.

if I were being fair to Tryl, I’d point out that he is using ‘socially conservative’ to mean more or less, keeping the status quo. But given that progressive sounds - well, modern and forward looking (even if gender identity actually is regressive), it’s quite a strong value judgement to label sex realism and opposition to assisted death as conservative.

Yes it was and yes I had forgotten that connection!

more in common just always comes across as pointing out that sadly some ppl just still haven't understand that it's much progressive ie RSOH to agree men can become women if they say so

I feel they're very much about not finding common ground but taking a stance on a piece of ground and then being sorrowful about the ppl not on the ground with them

I think that on the thread he's trying pretty hard to be even handed (he says "not value laden" a few times in responses). I'm not sure I agree with the OP about the framing.

I fully admit the problem is he has form on this issue so I'm less inclined to cut him any slack.

I think framing support for women's rights as being socially conservative is very value laden

Was he on AntiSocial on Radio 4, presented by Adam Fleming? I seem to remember him popping up on a debate somewhere. Can anyone else remember?

iwishitwouldstartraining · 13/09/2026 19:09

Can't think of anything more socially conservative than believing that women should forget their own needs to support men.

I suspect it is because who is promoting the backlash with serious $; the Xian US hard right are not progressive in the slightest. Gay rights and abortion will be their next targets here.

I don't know why you bother posting this because it's so obviously not true, but it does suggest a rather socially conservative desire to ignore work done by women.

Being conservative about something is not an inherent wrong or fault, it is simply a recognition of the reasons that we/societies have developed certain practices or rules or patterns of behaviour, and why those reasons still have validity.

Being a radical or 'progressive' is to seek to demolish, destabilise or over-throw conditions in pursuit of a new set of conditions which you think better resemble your ideals.

Conservatism is more accommodating of human and social realities. Maintaining single sex protections recognises a millennia of human and social experience of some of the differences between the sexes and some of the ways that these differences can negatively impact upon women ( primarily) The facts of greater male physical strength; male pattern violence, and male sexual proclivities and sexual drives which predate on females.

It is not 'progressive' to pretend these differences don't exist and to remove the accommodations we make for women and girls on account of them.

Edited

The word radical is from the word for root- I always think that interesting that a word which has connotations of wanting extreme change also deals with roots- the change is more thorough rather than further away.
It's interesting so many men have led the ideas related to women's identity and have become prominent in doing that

is this some sort of performance art? are you doing an explanatory interpretive dance that we can;t see?

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 13/09/2026 19:32

In the screen shot in the OP. Tryl says 'drug legalisation seems a long way off'

you know when you want to sit someone down and say 'Luke, this may be a spot more complicated than you think it is'?

iwishitwouldstartraining · 13/09/2026 19:35

The Sex Discrimination Act was only passed 50 years ago and the Equality Act 16 years ago - how can wishing to protect those rights be socially conservative?

The most generous interpretation would be that he just hasn't thought about this very much.

It's really odd isn't it.

He seems to think that you can put all these things on a chart with socially conservative at one end and progressive at the other, but there were left wing reasons for opposing the assisted dying bill.

Or is he calling Diane Abbot socially conservative?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 13/09/2026 19:47

Luke Tryl is a knobber. I didn’t know about the Brendan Cox connection, he’s obviously worse.
