In a wider thread where he suggests progressives are on the back foot. https://x.com/luketryl/status/2099139172598505890?s=46

he is getting push back about his framing of women's rights v "gender identity" as its somehow socially conservative that women's rights are supported

because he's very clear with his framing that socially conservative should be seen as a bad thing

Luke who? I had to google who he is, so I don't see how much influence he will have on the debate. 😉

Two words - Theresa May.

PollyNomial · 13/09/2026 16:24

I suspect it is because who is promoting the backlash with serious $; the Xian US hard right are not progressive in the slightest. Gay rights and abortion will be their next targets here.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 13/09/2026 16:26

Look at his bio

"Luke Tryl was Director, Corporate Strategy at Ofsted February 2017 to February 2019. In that role he oversaw the development and implementation of Ofsted’s strategic priorities, as well as the organisation’s research function and external relations.
Before Ofsted, Luke was Special Adviser to Nicky Morgan at the Department for Education and he has also been a Director of Public Policy Projects at an independent think tank, Head of Education at Stonewall and an Education Researcher at Reform (now Re:State)."

So started in Stonewall (same role as Wes Streeting), was at the DfE when they were wedging transactivism into schools and then part of the Ofsted problem when they were pushing gender identity at schools.

Obviously he could have been a disinterested bystander in all this - or could have been one of the bureaucrats pushing an age inappropriate adult ideology at children below the age of consent. Wonder which it is?

If it's the latter then it would explain his framing of women's rights as a bad thing.

So women should stop fighting men who want to access their spaces because if they don’t they will lose even more rights? Just to stop the “Christian right”?

Yet again the insinuation that sex realism in the UK is somehow funded by the American Evangelical wing of the Republican party. 🙄 If it is I wish a bit would come my way as I've donated more than I can reasonably afford towards the recent court and tribunal cases that have helped to protect women's rights.

Of course. Total capitulation to male demands are required from women. #nodebate and all that.

So if it is the Christian right who threaten to remove women’s rights if we don't give up single sex spaces, why are the atheist left fighting to remove single sex spaces and not backing women up to preserve all their rights?

Shortshriftandlethal · 13/09/2026 16:41

Being conservative about something is not an inherent wrong or fault, it is simply a recognition of the reasons that we/societies have developed certain practices or rules or patterns of behaviour, and why those reasons still have validity.

Being a radical or 'progressive' is to seek to demolish, destabilise or over-throw conditions in pursuit of a new set of conditions which you think better resemble your ideals.

Conservatism is more accommodating of human and social realities. Maintaining single sex protections recognises a millennia of human and social experience of some of the differences between the sexes and some of the ways that these differences can negatively impact upon women ( primarily) The facts of greater male physical strength; male pattern violence, and male sexual proclivities and sexual drives which predate on females.

It is not 'progressive' to pretend these differences don't exist and to remove the accommodations we make for women and girls on account of them.

Queer activists are doing a pretty good job of attacking gay rights themselves. Like the rights of lesbians to associate with other lesbians.

Britain is not the U.S. We have our own history and culture - even if U.S politics has infiltrated and distorted it via the long reach of social media.

The U.S is behind the game on the issue of single sex protections and on women's rights more generally. We are not looking to the U.S for leadership, we have grown our own movement from the grassroots up. Women who care about female dignity and female rights.

Shortshriftandlethal · 13/09/2026 16:52

Luke Tryl is a young man with a naturally rebellious youthful spirit, who automatically thinks anything that is established is automatically constraining or bad. This is in the nature of youthful rebellion......but over time and with experience and reflection most people come to realise that life is full of constraints and boundaries and that not everything in life revolves our urge/the individual's urge for self expression or personal choice. We all live in a wider web of social and ethical responsibilities.

ThisFunSheep · 13/09/2026 17:01

Yeah 7/10 of More in Common's UK directors are not British so I'm not surprised they don't have a understanding of the British TERF movement and how it differs internationally.

Coincidentally I know this as I was briefly looking into them about polls this week. They provide a lot of polls to the press, including things like voting intention, as far as I can tell totally legally, but I would prefer a neutral polling agency - edit i.e. one without ^^any sort of political "vision".

As probably the intelligent women of this forum know, but surprisingly few elsewhere, it is too easy for bias to slip in with polls, the way things are worded etc, methodology etc.

They also receive quite a bit of grant funding but choose not to declare their income sources on Company House. There's an oddity where they have to declare it for a particular poll but not generally.

More in Common was co-founded by Brendan Cox. There are allegations that he was a serial abuser of women. His involvement with the organisation has been pushed into the shadows.

So a co-founder who's has a history of sexual assault, a funding stream that they're keeping under wraps and wokey blokey Luke, a grifter from the third sector, More in Common seems like a typical product of the 21st Century 'progressive' left.
I'd rather be considered 'socially conservative' than be within 500 miles (🎶) of this side. 😫
