Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez declares 'Woke was crazy'

'New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gave us that when she literally laughed off a movement she had become the poster girl for live on telly. It was in the midst of an ABC News discussion on the excesses of 2020 progressives earlier this month that she shared a saying from a colleague: “Woke 1 was crazy!”'

Seems a significant shift.

Father's Death: Her father died of cancer in 2008 when she was a sophomore in college at Boston University.

Post-College Struggle: His death led to major financial difficulties and a long legal battle over his estate. After graduating during the Great Recession, Ocasio-Cortez worked as a waitress and bartender to help support her family and prevent foreclosure on their home.

If someone realises that they have mistakenly backed a terrible, damaging, destructive ideology three years previously, then the human and honest thing to do would be to give a thoughtful and considered apology. Lolz and 'it was crazy' is not that. She has directly contributed to harm done, and has specifically attacked women who tried to stand up for women's rights.

To Nancy Mace on objecting to men using women's facilities:

That was a nasty thing to say to another woman and a nasty way of saying it.

Yes what I’m saying is she went into politics from basically no corporate or relevant experience. So she may have had to make leaps and bounds in her learning much like all of us do when going from casual work to professional industries. Shes just skipped the whole in between experience.

I get that Gretel 346, and I am not taking away from her at all.

But people try and pitch this as some sort of inner city street cred but it really is not.

There's movement away from the DSA policies amongst Democrats eyeing up a chance of leadership. We can but hope.

Yes, but being a member of congress is a role with much responsibility. I think she owes the electorate an explanation for some of her past positions and why she has now changed her mind about them.

Being a public representative with great responsibility is not predicated on your 'lived experience' but on your capability in handling that role. You are responsible for your positions and for your actions and you have to be held accountable.

In the last couple of decades I think young people have been lauded and lionised far too much; so much so that we've been led by people with far too little worldly experience. Real world politics is not the same as student politics.

Agree about the lionisation of the young that’s been going on, and I found the whole ‘The Squad’ thing icky. As has already been said on this thread, it’s politics as fashion, when fashion is the very last thing politics should be because it’s all in the now, novelty, and has no sights on consequences or longevity. Part of it is due to social media, but sadly I also think it’s down to too many Gen X refusing to admit they’re getting old and acting like that Steve Buscemi ‘How do, fellow kids’ GIF.

AOC is blatantly trying to wipe away the lingering stank of Woke1 in the hope of a bigger role in two years time, maybe even a presidential bid, but it’s going to take a lot more than treating her past stances and declarations like an ill advised haircut, it’s more like a regrettable tattoo.

Some of that lionisation arose as a result of Greta Thunberg, in my view....and then we saw some increasingly young MPs and local councillors here in Britain. Wasn't Mhari Black just 20 when she was elected? There is a councillor in my city who was even younger when he was elected, and he's been very influential is steering the way the city council has encated gender ideology across the city.

The one thing that pains me in all this is that the repulsicans will use this as an excuse to say that they were the right ones all along and could drag the USA into a even deeper more right-wing quagmire.

I'm hopeful that post Trump ( MAGA) the Republicans will head back to the sensible centre ground than most of them occupy. Traditional conservatives.

That is my worry too @Shortshriftandlethal .

I saw Trump winning for a second time as an indication that his type of politics is a feature rather than a blip. The Republican Party has been on this trajectory since the Tea Party really.

My worry, not unlike yours, is that Trump will be voted out rather than the Democrats being voted in. They still seem to have very little to say beyond the "we are not him."

Who will come after the next elected is the one to be really scared of, mainly because of the way the SC is lining it all up.

What is also worth noting is the deliberate plan to use blatant emotional manipulation to gain support. As we have seen here in the UK though, this has the potential to back fire.

And of course…. Let’s not forget the Victorian state government attempt which shamed women and modelled that women should just ignore their personal intuitive response and discomfort of being in an enclosed lift with a male person they don’t want to be in an enclosed space with.

Rubbish. I strongly supported gay marriage, in part because if two gay people wish to marry, it takes away nothing from my rights and the rights of others if they do so. That is not true at all with biological males intruding into women's spaces and competing with women and girls in competitive sports. Rights are not absolute - they have boundaries where they infringe on the rights of others, and Americans understand that.

There is a bizarre fightback going on in the progressive Left in the US. There is an organisation called the Associated Press Sports Editors whose work is to influence the way sports are covered by the Associated Press so that it's done in an approved way. They've just announced an award for journalism representing the best ideological compliance to genderism:
